I just recently bought Bucky O Hare for $65. Cart only. This is the most I've spent on a used NES game that was just a cart only. Just scanning Ebay and this games going for much more.. I totally lucked out on this. I remember not even a year ago it was going for $50 to $60. How the hell did it go so high in price? Must of been the times it was mentioned on Youtube. I'm not sure if I'm ever going to spent this much on a game unless it comes complete.

Under $10, I believe, unless I'm forgetting some early-1990s purchase from Funcoland or BRE.

I don't really collect NES, so what little I buy is always cheap, though I've gotten some uncommon- to rare-ish carts along the way (Laser Invasion, etc.).

I spent $30 on Dragon Warrior IV with the manual and charts about 15 years ago, and I think that was it for a used NES game. Most of mine were bought by 2002, so I never spent a ton, but I stopped around 550 or so, and never did pick up stuff like Little Samson or Panic Restaurant. I still pick one up every once in awhile, but there's not much left in the US I want.

If you're talking actual cash $40 right after I moved back here in later 2012 on Dragon Warrior IV. If we're talking flips/trades then it gets more expensive. I tend to set a rule never to pay cash on a game for a value higher than the original retail cost. Before that it was something in the $20-30 range, but I always wanted that game, the cart was like in new like quality(cared for) condition, so I grabbed it.

$20, sorry but NES games don't have enough gameplay to be worth big bucks.

Sometime around 2010/2011 I paid 700$ for Flintstones 2 near-mint/complete.

I think there are some games definitely that have enough play value to be worth more than $20, not a lot, but there are some. It was an early system, many of the games haven't aged well, but those of existing franchises or non-bungled arcade ports stand up well. Dragon Warrior IV I mentioned, that one was so freaking late it's right on par (audio/visual aside) with 16bit SNES RPGs in quality/game play. I do agree many of them aren't worth it, maybe like 50~ of the 700+ of them.

Hmm, probably no more than like 15 bucks? I know I got Maniac Mansion online and that was like 12 bucks (Christ, that was around when I first started using eBay). Pretty sure I bought Final Fantasy online too and that was around that much as well.

The vast majority of my NES games were bought in brick and mortar stores, most in the late 90s/early 00s. $3 has always been my NES cart sweet spot. I'd drop that much for most NES games (outside of extreme commons and most sports games), but I'd rarely drop more. Granted with my way of acquiring NES carts, I'm missing plenty of the more desirable titles. I don't have a single Mega Man, and I don't have any Dragon Warrior past the first (but who really cares when there are cheaper ways to play all of those; for example, I have DQ1 and 2 on GBC and DQ4 on DS). But I have landed some more expensive games on the cheap. Gun Nac is one of my more recently acquired NES carts, got it just a few years ago for the aforementioned 3 bucks, had no idea it was worth anything when I got it. Back then it was a good deal because loose carts were going for 20-30 bucks, now forget about it, I probably never would have it in my collection if I was looking to get it these days. Nice to have it too, it's a really fun little shmup.

Wow, I had no idea Bucky had gotten so expensive. I got mine many years ago for maybe $10.

I've spent more than I wanted on a few different carts. I think the worst I spent (on NES) was $60 for a cart only Godzilla 2. What is really dumb is I don't even like the game. It's ass compared to the first game which I do like.

I'm not going to say I won't spend that much on a game again. I know I will, and more. However I've recently re-evaluated my collection and collecting habits and I'm only going to pay big bucks for good games I want to play. I was going for a complete set but I just can't bring myself to pay the moeny for Action 52, the trio of porn games, or Staduim Events which I technically already own under a different name. I have over 700 games now on 2 custom made shelves that were made to hold a complete collection. The bigger shelf holds 480 and I decided I'm going to fill that with what I consider the best and purge the rest, putting the earnings to a few expensive carts I still want (Little Samson ... OUCH!). Long Story short I've got a Godzilla 2 to sell or trade.

I have 70-something games, all loose, but I have the manuals for all. I've probably spent more getting certain manuals than the games! Now I would say that the majority were games I've had since the early 90's, and I don't recall paying over $20 for any NES cart since. I pretty much completed the collection of games I wanted to have by 2009 for both NES and SNES, as well as Genesis for the most part. So I stopped before the ebay prices went bonkers. Since that time of course the Everdrive/PowerPak solutions have kept me from buying any more games.

I don't think I've ever paid more than $15 for a used NES game, and I think the only one I paid that much for was a complete in box copy of Super Mario Bros. 3.

I used to feel that way through trades, but I can't and won't do it anymore. I've permanently written off Aerofighters on SNES and Little Samson on the NES due to how far things have fallen. In the last couple of years i've sold off a couple hundred games, more if you include rare pick ups at stores/flea markets that were lowly marked too. I'm like you, keeping the good I will use, and dropping the dead weight. It has an amazing benefit. The last purge I did more than half of last year got me into this new high tier gaming laptop I ordered back in December. The time I've put into it alone, and not just with online chit chat garbage has been more in time and $ value than the goodies (and crap) I put out to pasture. It's really worth it just getting away from how things have become. And like you I even went last year and got this big media shelf for games and movies. As it stands now 20% of it has games on the shelves themselves, and probably 1/2 are legos I got back into as they're fun and stress relieving. The rest is empty or has misc things on it and it doesn't bother me one bit.

I actually built mine from scratch because the store bought ones just didn't fit right. I'm going to repurpose the other shelf to hold N64 games and controllers/accessories for all systems.

Back on topic some other games that I paid higher prices for would include .... Rainbow Islands for $35 (which I will keep with no regrets) and I nearly got Snow Bros. for $60 but took a pass and by the time I was ready to spend someone else had jumped on it.

I've paid higher prices for some of my Saturn and MVS games, but so far I haven't paid over $100 on a nes game. There are still some I want though. I almost pulled the trigger on $110 Cowboy Kid which I rented as a kid and really enjoyed but NEVER saw in a retail store. I'm sure I will eventually put that in my 480.

The most I can remember paying for a used NES game is around $75 for a CIB Nobunagas Ambition 2, $55 for a CIB Uncharted Waters a few months ago, and a CIB Lolo 3 for $45. Back in 1989-90, I paid $30 to $60 for new NES games, so around $50 doesn't seem like much to me if I like the game. I returned to NES collecting a few years ago before the drastic jump in prices, so I didn't pay that much for most of them. I wish I had bought a Gun Nac before it's recent price jump, but I didn't have the spare money when it was readily available for $20-40 a couple years ago. If I save the money, I would pay over $100 for it though. I guess I have some "collector" in me that's willing to pay top dollar for a game even if it's somewhat antiquated.

Probably $15 at the most for a single loose cart, and to be honest I can't remember ever spending that much off the top of my head.

Like most folks, I will grab pretty much any NES cart if they are under $4 and sound interesting, in the $5-$10 range it needs to be something good or with extras like a box/manual or something. Above that, well I'm not sure that what would make me spend more. A couple years ago I spent like $30 on 5 CIB good games, seems like a good deal now since Faxanadu alone goes for near that, but I was seriously debating it back then.

Oh, and I got a copy of Bucky O'Hare a couple years ago at my local thrift for $5 (along with some other games), I had no clue how expensive it was when I got it.

The most i ever spent on a game with real cash was 130 mexican pesos ($11) for fricking Panic Restaurant!

but when it comes to buying online, that's another story, if only because most japanese sellers have inconsistent and quite frankly crappy shipping fees, like $7 for shipping UNREGISTERED (tracking number i mean), and asking $6 for a adding tracking number or just $2 difference form that for EMS.

i don't know if packages arrive from japan to the US without the need of tracking but sweet jesus, and how about shipping with tracking to mexico, that is EVEN WORSE.

as for the games, while the games i have purchased seem artificially cheaper and good deals, it comes to the goddamn shipping scalping for crying out loud.

For example, Sweet Home on famicom is $18 cheapest right now non-shipped, and while shipping seems $4 the cheapest, it comes to the damn tracking fee that screw you over, so you might even ending paying more than what you paid for the game itself just to be safe it would not be stolen by the mail workers or get lost!

my copy of sweet home was bought at $9 + $7 from yamatoku-classic for a total of $16 for that one, and well, for that game and others, i ordered to be shipped to the US over my friend's mother's house (he is a real bro btw), so at the very least i guess tracking is not a problem in the US, but man o man, shipping can be a bitch!, and the people who put the fees can be bigger bitches!.

The most i payed was for GUN NAC from japanyouwant which was $21 alone at the end of the auction and shipping was $7 but at the very least they already included tracking number for my country and if you purchased another game you just add from 1 to 2 extra bucks, so at the very least those guys are nicer and i have gotten some nice gifts from them, in fact, i got Gun Nac from them along with Wai wai world for $12 including the extra buck for its inclusion in my purchase with Gun NAC, at the end of the day i payed $40 in the two games, but at the very least the fact that the $7 base fee for shipping already includes tracking for my country is decent enough, then again i had to put up with the snipers driving the auction price automatic so that there's not much difference in comparison to the cheapest BIN price :?

Luckily I was able to fill out most of my NES collection back in the late 90's and early 2000's before values began to skyrocket. I think the most I've ever spent on a used NES game was ~$15.00 for "Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom" at Vintage Stock a few years ago.

About eight years ago I purchased a factory sealed copy of Ninja Gaiden 3 for $50. I then sent it in to get graded(which cost another $50) and sold it on ebay for $650. That was quite the investment for me but one that paid off handsomely.

Prices in this hobby have a tendency to increase over time. Youtube vids have caused spikes in prices, but they usually get back on track (I'm thinking of Guardian Legend in particular).

The Bucky O Hare IP is a cult fave. The scarcity and quality of the game only add to its interest. That's why a lot of people in the hobby several years ago kept saying to buy the rare stuff then. As more copies get snatched, the prices go up, up, up! I missed my chance to buy Gun-Nac for $25. Even now, I don't pay that much as I get my games the hard way.

EDIT: Also, your last statement makes not sense since you bought a cart only game for that price. I'm giving you a little bit of a hard time, but maybe you meant to phrase that sentence a different way?

I paid $150 for Little Samson during the summer of 2011.

I bought a bunch of Nintendo games during that particular summer, pricey games that had been on my want list for years, as I was sensing that prices were going to get even crazier. I never thought it would become that insane though. So I managed to get Bonk, Rescue Rangers 2, Duck Tales 2, Bubble Bobble 2 at sub-$100 prices.

Tanooki
03-16-2015, 07:24 PM
Good move on your part, I remember all those being reasonably priced back in 2011 even in 2012 for part of it, well Samson not so much, but by todays standard a poor mans price which is sad since it's like nearly 10x the price in such a short time which just isn't right. I wish I had grabbed C&D RR2 but I can't stomach paying like $100+ for it so I've just let it go. At least I have Duck Tales 2, my favorite of the disney old 80s franchises.

If I could travel back to 2011 I still doubt I'd pay the $150 for Samson, but I'd grab up Panic Restaurant as it's good, just short to screw that price. I would also get the one SNES regret I have - Aerofighters. Awesome game I once owned complete other than the box for like $10 in the late 90s it was bought at retail. I didn't like the $300 it was 2-3 years ago and I really don't like where it is now as there's not enough game to justify it. Anything else I have on a quiet list I keep is all sub-$50 mostly sub $30 stuff but I'm in no hurry and they've never risen so I don't much care.

My ex actually got Panic Restaurant for me in the summer of 2004. I was looking at it but still hesitant to shell out 10 whole bucks for it, so she got it for me, lol. I don't understand either how can a mediocre game like Power Blade 2 be around $200 - I used to see quite a few cart only copies a dozen years ago. Late era Taito games values are a mystery. They're not that rare - save Samson and Flintstones 2 I guess - and they're nowhere near close the top echelon of NES titles with regard to quality.

I'm glad I built most of my NES and SNES collection way back in the late 90s and early 2000s. On the other hand, I'm not so glad that I waited until 2012-2013 to start collecting more seriously for the $aturn and PC Engine, haha.

Theres no mystery all of them thanks to samson and flintstones in the last couple of years have really been heavily talked up in annoying hidden gem youtube videos and other formats. Some took longer than others to rise, even the last to bloom like power blade 1 and kickmaster have been rolling up while they had stayed forever in the sub 10 dollar price range. If you go back to like 2012 kickmaster, power blade, jetsons, non taito cowboy kid werent much but now theyre painful to get and as you noted, theyre not really rare. as for NES MegaMan 5 for $35

I bought a lot of carts new as a kid but none of them were new releases, infact most came from the big bin infront of the registers at KB toys where a lot of them were under $10, got some good ones in there (including MegaMan 6)

I spent $50 on Bible Buffet.... There's no defending that decision... But it's the most I ever spent on one NES gamd and I have about 212 NES games, I still collect them cuz they never get old to me and even the bad ones interest me. And all the other regular reasons ppl collect NES games. Aside from that tho and a few other stupid impulse buys I try not to spend more then $20 on a real big NES title like Zelda, Mega Man, Contra, etc. cuz $20 is worth the enjoyment and not too expensive like $50 for Turtles in Time or Castlevania 4. SNES prices r way steeper. I also prefer to collect hidden gems no one cares about, like Monster Party and Startropics, instead of the ones everyone now knows are good like Power Blade, Bucky Ohare, Felix the Cat, etc, which has to be why they're so expensive. NES is not an expensive system to collect for if u know wat ur looking for.

I'm considering selling some of my games including my most expensive one Bonk. That over $300 price tag on it is very tempting because I'm waffling on maybe finding a way to fit a 2nd pinball table in here. :P I think it's a bit ballsy saying the system is not expensive to shop for if you know what to hunt down. What happens if you were in love in the day with a game that's now like $300-1000 because you probably have a 1:100 chance of finding a $10 Samson lying around.

Power Blade is one that baffles me. It was next to worthless for many years even though the sequel had so much attention due to rarity/price. It only really started to get attention. Or perhaps demand is finally outweighing supply. Either way, I feel like it's finally where it should've been in relation to the rest of today's market. $30 isn't outrageous in 2015 for the quality of the game IMO.

I like to call it Taito fever, lol.

Tanooki, Bonk is okay, but I feel that one only really has rarity going for it. If it were of a higher quality (given the release year) I think it'd be nuttier priced. Of the higher end as far as price, I feel like it has the least going for it as a game and you could buy a superior version and the console it's on and still have a wad of money.

Power Blade 2 is a really rare nes game, its up there for sure. Its rarer than Bubble Bobble 2 or Bonks Adventure.

Power Blade was a $5-8 game for the longest stretch. It was like what now maybe 2 years ago when it finally shot up to then $15...20...$30+? It is the Taito effect, and all the games around the SNES and after period are finally getting kicked in the pants by association. Kickmaster isn't really phenomenal (had it twice in the last few years) and it was patently ignored like Power Blade, but it's not an $8 game now either, yet it isn't going up there like with the Jetsons which isn't all that good of a game either.

Now Bonk, it's good, it's just compared to the TG16 game and makes it come off as terrible which is understandable. I find though given what it costs to buy a TG16 and Bonk these days, let alone buy that system and have even a small respectable library is a flaming ripoff so it's even at $350~ for the NES game a lesser of two evils which is sick. Personally I've had both, I like both, so I really don't care. The NES game just has some audio/visuals and some stage bits stripped from it which was kind of stupid/lazy (area removal) but it's fun and I can finish it which is nice.

I have to really put some thought into this. The fact is I'd like another pinball, down side is I have no room for another full size or even a 2/3. I have been waffling for a long stretch but I really need to get back my dad's old TOMY Astro Shooter pinball which is a tabletop one with some motors and rubbers in it, it's very well made, much like an EM table and it got wrecked in one of my many moves. They stunningly have gone up in price, they're like $100 complete/boxed, so maybe just that, but if i do that I really don't need to sell off Bonk or the rest and can just sit on them. I think the only way another PIN will fit in here is when my kid gets old enough that I can move her little easel, toy kitchen, toy box and the rest out of here and into her room when she's mature enough to not play with her crap when it's bed time. I have this nice big corner on the back side of this room one would fit into.

Well, I think there's lotsa hidden gems on the NES that are still very cheap, and just some well known games that are cheap, too. I spent about $30 for my copy of Contra, but I play the crap out of it, and have finished it multiple times. Ninja Gaiden is an $8 game, there's some great RPGs like Startropics and Faxanadu no one cares about, Blaster Master is cheap, Life Force, Gradius, Mighty Bomb Jack, Xexyz, Monster Party, Smash TV, all less then $10 each. NES Open Tournament Golf is def one of the best NES sports games cuz it has a battery pack and stars Mario and Luigi. $5 game. Much cheaper then Mario Golf on N64. Then there's the puzzle games like Yoshi, Dr. Mario, Klax, Tetris, Palamedes, all under $10, Arkanoid isn't too crazy, Double Dragon isn't that pricy, either. I could go on and on.

I know there's some ridiculous prices, prolly the most ridiculous prices are for rare NES games of any system, and I'd love to own some of them, but there's just such a huge library there's still plenty to dig into on a budget. Game quality is higher here then on Atari, so you'll find more games that aren't crap, even tho there's enough Xenophobes and Color A Dinosaurs too. It's just such a big library with something for every gamer and collector.

Hmm... I don't have any NES games I spent a lot for. The most I've spent is $16 for a cart+box (no manual) copy of Metal Storm, back in 2010; since the price of that game has spiked WAY high, so I'm glad I got it then! Even then it was a good deal, but now that'd be worth well over $100 I'm sure.

After that, the next most expensive NES games I have are Faria (cart only) and The Magic of Scheherazade (complete) for $15 each back in 2010 and 2011, but both were in buy-2-get-1 deals, so they weren't exactly $15.

Everything else I have for the NES (182 games, some of them Japanese imports) was cheaper. (There were a few lots I got from Japan for over $15, such as a 6-game lot for probably about $40 including shipping, but the per-game average there is lower than the total of course.)

You're right, I just sold a cart only copy of the game for $117 free shipping on ebay on the 15th. I started it lower but it out of habit I put the 30% over value BIN on there and someone surprised me and paid it. I felt it was a bit much, so I was nice and upgraded it to 2 day priority in a box.

Checking ebay, I see Metal Storm with box+cart (no manual) selling for $150, or a bit more if I had the manual. It's kind of crazy how much NES game prices have gone up.

I don't have most of the valuable NES games (nothing Taito other than the first Bubble Bobble, for instance), but I do have that one... and Bucky O'Hare, I guess; I had no idea that game had gotten somewhat valuable! I got a loose copy of that back in '08 or '09 for fairly cheap (probably $5 or $8 at most, I'd guess). It is a pretty good game, and from Konami, but it's worth $60+, really? Huh. Checking ebay now, looks like cart-only copies sell for $45 and up. Price inflation at work...

The most I spent was $500 on Flintstones 2 and that was around the time it hit $700-$800 cart only. I took a gamble and hit a Buy It Now from Brazil I think and it worked out. There is a lot of people complaining about prices on here, and I get it, but its not 2009 anymore, hell its not 2011 anymore when I acquired most of my stuff. Its become an expensive hobby, but compared to other hobbies Ive had/have its cheap.

The complaining is fair since I think enough of the people here are in their 30s+ and didn't jump in when all the scalpers decided to raise hell. You can't do much other than complain or walk away and I think enough people even if they're very fed up are still into the games so it just sucks. I mean I don't intend to ever call it 100% quits, but I'm near that. I am beyond being taken advantage of and seeing things just get more ugly by the season. I've cashed out a good bit, and I went and invested in a pinball table of all things last month. I've put some work on rehabbing it to a point, and I have a kit of goodies out in the USPS truck at the moment where I can do far more. I've got a missing rubber ring, some replacement divider plastics, a novus1->3+rag kit, and stuff on my to do list today as much as I can. After that not sure, there's plenty of mylar on there I don't intend to remove out of fear, but the exposed areas probably could use a waxing.

prices for many truly rare nes carts, especially complete in box, are not really unreasonable considering how old they are and how many people are collecting them. If you are a collector and you want original rare nintendo games then its gonna cost some money. I think the price on little samson is extremely high considering its not as rare as some of the other taito games.
Almost every nes game can be played on a powerpak, so there is no real need to drop over 100$ on a nes cart just to play it.

I think the lesson to take away from this kind of pricing is that if you really want to collect or buy a lot of games to play, be patient and stay ahead of the curve. If you weren't buying NES, SNES, Neo Geo, and Turbografx a few years ago, you're just stuck with this inflation unless you wait and hope to run into a good deal, and in the meantime buy stuff you want to play that's not in a frenzy at the moment. For me, in the last year I've really dialed in on import PS1, Saturn, Famicom, and Super Famicom 2D odditites and puzzle games. There are fantastic games that can be had for a pittance and are often entirely in English, Such as Mario's Super Picross, Mario & Wario, Popoitto Hebereke, Meta-Ph-List, Plue no Daibouken, etc. that I've picked up for $3-5 each on ebay, because they aren't what's big right now. Buying Dreamcast, Genesis, PS1, and PS2 games is extremely cheap and easy right now with only a few expensive exceptions, so just grabbing up those great games you want there while they're cheap and keeping your eyes open for a good deal on those expensive Little Samsons or Haganes will keep you loaded down with awesome stuff to play without making your wallet bleed, and if/when people start jumping in on those systems, you'll be the one out in front with the story on how you paid $4 for that $100 game some YouTube channel dug out and generated some buzz about.

That's the word and bird's the word.

When I got fed up with the NES/SNES abuse I went to Famicom/GBA stuff instead. I keep thinking about SFC but I haven't pulled the trigger to get that stuff back, not sure why, probably just demotivated and rather just mess with what I have old and new. Yet since I got my pinball a few weeks back I haven't touched a damn thing, laptop games included, just it and my kindle. I intend to break out of that once Xenoblade pops up, but I really shouldn't shrug off the two I was working. :\

The problem is staying ahead of the curve is the curve bends and bends randomly...you never know when you'll get baked, and if you get hooked you'll end up hitting that wall yet again repeating the pain until you run out of stuff you want to bother with. That's what went on with me...NES, that got ugly, got SNES, that got ugly, did some N64 and it went up (nothing like the others), then Gamecube. At that point I was F-it, did the Famicom/GBA thing, then saved into the laptop for 6mo, and now pinball and Lego. Video gaming has become a pricy headache. I haven't stopped, but unless I really really want to play it, forget it unless it's a flip.

I agree. I will sometimes pay EBay prices for a game I really want to play, if I feel the price is worth it, like $20 for Mega Man 2 is not a terrible price. Cuz you'll get lots of enjoyment from it. But I basically inherit 6th gen games from ppl for free it's ridiculous. A little side goal for collecting I have is to get every original Xbox exclusive. I also find ps2 games everywhere. Thrift stores are generally good for these games. And once in a while u do find those fantastic deals, I was in a Goodwill just a few days ago and found a copy of Twilight Princess, the GameCube version, complete for $6, and that one sells for $45 loose on Amazon, so there are deals out there. I only say that so ppl looking for good deals don't get discouraged. They're out there. I also think u hafta compromise sometimes and go for the 'fair' deal as opposed to just expecting the $2 Stadium Events all the time.

Couple bucks. My copy of Mario 3 was around $3 at the flea market a number of years ago. NES games are always more expensive than I think they should be, so I pretty much never buy them.

$40 for Tengen Tetris, why? Because it was there and opportunity knocked, so I answered for a stiff fee. Plus it was a local buy.
