View Full Version : Would You Buy a New Game-Based Cereal?

Let's brainstorm a bit. If some company introduced a new videogame-based cereal (like, say, General Mills, Nestle, or Kellogg's), would you buy it? I know taste would have to be considered, but generally speaking, would you be interested in buying a game cereal? What would make for a market-realistic brand upon which to base a cereal? What sort of flavors and ingredients would you feasibly want in a game cereal?

Personally, I think they could bring back the Pac-Man and Nintendo Entertainment Cereal ones as they were. Pac-Man, Mario, and Link/Zelda are as big as they ever were, generally speaking. Yeah, you don't have the huge lines to play Pac in the arcades, but look at all the home and portable console releases and re-releases. And the Mario and Zelda franchises are probably much bigger today in terms of the total number of fans compared to back then.

And Angry Birds. If there can be real-world Angry Birds candy, gum, and fruit snacks, and there can be real-world Angry Birds cereal. Here's an idea: make this breakfast food with the birds as the colored marshmallows and the pigs as the pieces of grain.

I seem to have read more than a few articles suggesting that breakfast cereals are in steep decline. The era of such novelties seems to be long past. (Remember Addams Family cereal? And Batman Returns cereal?) Angry Birds does sound kind of feasible, but reportedly licensing profits are in decline there too.

Absolutely not. For the main reason being I avoid eating processed GMO and chemical infested crap like that in the first place. You asked :)

Here's a better idea: make them all marshmallow pieces.

No. The only currently popular game series that has never had a cereal that I might be interested in would be Grand Theft Auto, and I don't see that happening.

Well considering what they charge for cereal GTA would be fitting.

I don't think I'd ever buy it, I HATE marshmallows. As a kid I couldn't go near Nintendo cereal with those in it, but I did like the rebranded captain crunch DK cereal with all those tasty barrels.

Not sure why the fantasies of GMO are coming up. Chemicals in your food and overly processed stuff isn't good, and most of that fake sugar junk is that.

Sonic seems like it would be a perfect fit for a cereal. Something like Honey Nut or Frosted Cheerios to stand for the rings, and then throw in some marshmallows vaguely shaped/colored like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Robotnik, whoever.

I can see it now, Sonic Raisin Bran. They recommend at least a few servings in one seating so you can have the sonic marshmallows speed their way through in about 20-30 minutes intact for a true sense of speed. OF course it would be cross promoted with a slider bag at White Castle.

Considering Sega has never been shy about licensing, I am astonished that this never happened.

Yuck all that processed crap. When I do eat cereal it's as healthy as I can find it and I put my own fruit in it and it tastes a million times better then that sugary marshmallow crap. Having said that I'd totally buy a new box of Pacman cereal or C-3PO's (I know, not a game but hey it's Star Wars) just for the box

Depending on the license, I might just out of nostalgia, but I don't really eat cereal. Maybe if my son was a little older (he's only just 4 months old) he could enjoy it, but that's a ways off.

To be profitable these days it'd have to be a super popular license, though, so I probably wouldn't go for it. Maybe a Skylander's cereal with some sort of item or acessory tie in could be neat, whether sending in box tops or in-package could catch on. I think they did a promotion like that with Frito Lay awhile back.

Halo cerial, with mini grenades and machine guns, mix in pop rocks for an explosion in your mouth. Maybe put in red food coloring so the milk turns bloody.

Mortal Kombat cerial, a harpoon shoots out of the bowl and pulls your face in. Back of the box reads "Get over here"

Nope, I would never buy video game cereal.

I might buy video game cereal but not to eat it. I wish I had a box of that Nintendo cereal to have on display. It's hard to find any old cereal once discontinued and they can be expensive years later.

I loved Pac Man cereal. It was Corn Pops and marshmallows I believe. I was really young and only had it a few times as it was expensive or it was phasing out at the time. Nintendo should make a cereal with Smash Bros characters. that would totally sell since everything Nintendo save for the Wii U tends to sell decently.

Smash Bros. Cereal is a great idea. It would sell quite well. Almost everything Nintendo would be represented. I'd buy a box... or a dozen. ;)

Dude you know it would never work. No matter how much of that marshmallow filled mess they shipped out, all the scalpers would be there as the pallet arrived at the grocery store to buy every one so they can shove them up on ebay for 2-10x the price depending how common the guy on the front of the cardboard box was since you know Nintendo would do a set. :D

Now that you mention it, the fact that they didn't bother with a Pokemon cereal (in Red and Blue versions, of course) is probably the best indication that the time is past.

I remember Kelloggs or General Mills had a Pokemon cereal in 2000. It was basically Lucky Charms with Pokemon marshmallows. I bought a couple at my work. Should of kept the box for a memento.

Oh HELL yes!!! C-3POs were freaking delicious! It's the one cereal I miss the most from my childhood. There were so many great ones from that time though: Donkey Kong Jr with the colored fruit pieces, Nerds with the two flavors in the separate bags, Dunkin' Donuts (wow, anybody remember that one?), and of course the Pac-Man and Donkey Kong flavors. A cereal that kinda recaptured the feel of that era for me was the Power Puff Girls with the fizzy pop-rocks pieces (early 2000's I wanna say). Very tasty, but short-lived. And yeah, I'm a sucker for the monster cereals they roll out every Halloween. They even briefly brought back Fruit Brute, which I never had a chance to try before, and sweet Jesus, it was amazing!

So yeah, if any new video game themed cereals were to show up in the grocery store aisle, I'd probably check them out. Coincidentally, there was a cool little indie film about this very subject called Flakes. It centers around this "cereal diner" and stars a pre-famous Zoe Deschanel. Entertaining flick, especially if you're nostalgic for classic cereal brands.

What I don't get is why SpaghettiOs and "fruit snacks" are apparently OK for tie-ins these days, but not cereals. :?

Tanooki

Good point. The spaghetti-os aren't that bad for you other than the sodium in the can, but the other are just foul.

I'd love the Bandai Namco cereal system. Packaged Nerds (or Nintendo Cereal System style) with DS2 on one side, and DS2 on the other. I'd buy two boxes.

Seriously though i'd grab the nintendo cereal system again, at least if the boxes were in 'retro' style and at least zelda was back into it. Now that I think of it, a league of legends cereal would also be nice. I always wanted to eat Lux.

Would anyone here buy a new cereal based video game?

Something like good old Chex Quest.

There actually was a Nerds cereal packaged that way, if you didn't know (its hard to tell if you did, or if you just meant how the candy's packaged).

I would say no simply based on the fact that it would be like most cold cereal, mostly sugar and other garbage. The definition of junk food.

I was never really big on gimmick cereal, even when I was a kid. That said, I can see the appeal. However, I'm not sure that parents are as hot to trot on cereals as they used to be. At some point we became smart enough to realize that it was not nearly as healthy as the cereal companies wanted us to believe.

If there's not an Angry Birds cereal, I don't know that there will be any future game-related cereals.

Yeah, Pokemon cereal was a thing. There was even some guy selling VGA graded boxes on ebay like last month.

That was when I knew we were in a bubble for sure.

Tanooki

Bubble sure, why not. But for once this time I think VGA may actually be providing a service there placing 15 year old cereal in a coffin of plastic because who knows what would happen if the wrong idiot ate something that old. :D It's a plastic bio containment crate there to stop the daring from chowing down.

Nowadays, probably not. These days I buy games mainly by word of mouth and sometimes by reviews. I mainly read game reviews for their entertainment value especially the ones that review crap games. However, back in the day as a kid I might of bought or asked the folks to buy me a game based on a cereal.

I still think there is room for another Nintendo cereal, one based upon Pokemon. Gotta eat em all, then catch all the box art pokemon on the front, and then the random toy in the box of happy meal quality or throwing in a few special cereal pokemon trading card game cards. Nauseating gold right there.

I stick with 2 classics with cereal Honey Nut Cheerios and Life. I would have to admit since it was the only one I'd eat as a kid, if it ever did exist again if they rebranded the barrels of Captain Crunch to Donkey Kong Cereal I'd buy a box.
