Question About 3DS Pokemon Games

I don't have a 3DS yet, but I plan on getting one in the future and I'm curious about something. Say I had Pokémon X on there as a digital download and had a physical copy of Omega Ruby in the cartridge slot. Could I trade pokemon between the two or do they still require you to use two systems?

If you have Pokemon Bank, you should be able to transfer regardless.

I thought about that, but I was just wondering if I could trade without having to pay for the service. Like, would the system detect both games and allow you to transfer without using the bank as a go between?

I have Y digitally and Alpha Sapphire physical.
Just checked in Y and no. The only trade options are infrared, wireless or online.
