View Full Version : Would DSi XL be good for certain emulators ? (it has a nice 4:3 screen)

I have a DSi XL, but don't have any flash card or anything, but I was thinking that with the large 4:3 screen that it has, it could be cool for certain emulators. I'm guessing it's possible to use some type of flash card with the DSi XL and then run emulators, but I'm guessing that it would be limited to early systems, like NES, maybe TG-16, gameboy, lynx, game gear...

I'd be ok with that. I know that it's not going to run SNES games perfectly (what portable does ?) I'm guessing Genesis with bad sound, and somewhat crappy emulation might be possible. Just curious if anybody is using a DSi XL for retro games on the go.

Basically, I'm looking for the best portable experience I can get for retro games, WITH A 4:3 SCREEN.

The last part is the hard part. Tons of stuff out there with 16:9 screens. I can't stand the pillar bars or the zooming. 4:3 or bust.

My $40 Android phone runs them perfectly as well as emulators for:

Genesis/SMS/SG-1000
Sega CD
Game Gear
NES/Famicom/Famicom Disk System
Turbografx/Supergrafx/Cd
Neo Geo
GBA/GBC/GB
Neo Geo Pocket
Atari Lynx
Virtual Boy
DS/DSi
PS1
N64
MAME
Colecovision
Atari 2600
Dreamcast

There are others but that's just what I have. I know you're looking for a portable system, but why limit yourself? An Android along with a bluetooth controller(such as the Moga) is the ultimate retro gaming portable device. Hands down, without question, no arguments....(just look at that list of emus)

iPad is 4:3 and is brilliant with iCade controls.

Agreed on both responses. DSIXL couldn't match what a decent android device could do in the least bit both in performance and quantity of quality emulators either. And yeah, the iCade works wonder with an ipad (I had an iPad2.) I still have the original iCade though, works just fine with my 7" android tablet since it's just bluetooth and not blindly allied with apple to only work with iOS.

I have a. iCade Core (just the stick, no cabinet) which is very versatile. You can get one for about $20 shipped from eBay sellers.

The DSi XL's biggest problem is that it's resolution is below 240p meaning all of those classic games will have screen clipping/compression issues.
