View Full Version : Your All-time Favorite Arcade Game
The Unknown Gamer

As another posting reminded me of Pac Man. I began to think of what
was my favorite arcade game (thats at the arcade and not at home)
To me the answer was simple Pac Jr. I loved that game, best of all
for me I was very good at it. The layout of the board and the inbetween
animation was great. I still wonder why nobody came out with a home
version other than the 2600 crap was ever released. You know I even
contacted Namco when they were still releasing Namco Museum titles
for the PSX and asked them. No joke, the guy I finally talked to actually
told me that the US crew wanted to release a Pac Man collection at the
same time Pac Man 20th aniversary came out for the PSX. But they were
over rulled by the bosses in Japan. Anyway other than my personal
obsession what is your all-time favorite arcade game. That includes Pong
to present day machines

We've done this a couple times here, but I'll bite again :D I got a lot of favorite arcade games.. If I had to choose though It would have to be ROBOTRON. My nostalgic favorite is the Taito upright version of Space Invaders Part II. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to find one of these anywhere in the states.
Lots more arcade games I really like.. too many to mention though

Rastan by Taito, always holds a special place in my heart, although I've definitely spent the most money on VF4: Evolution... it's a different kind of play though, and money is required for the latter.

I'm gonna be extremely cheap n' cheesy here and say the Ultracade! It's that arcade unit that packs in about 40 old arcade games in one convenient cabinet. Oh alright, if I had to pick another it would be a tie between Ms. Pac Man and Robotron.

That port is one of the best games for the 2600, I think you're too stuck on the arcade version :)
There were also good ports for the 5200 and the Atari 8bit computers. You can buy a repro of the 5200 game at AtariAge. edit: forgot about the C64 version too, us Atari guys always do that ;)
My favorite arcade games from 20 years ago were Karate Champ and Cinematronics' World Series Baseball. I like the unique controls each of them had for the time. The baseball game had cool analog pitching and batting controls.

I got mine for a mere $130 plus tax at a Coin-Op auction, so your goal is definitely within reach. Though I see you're not exactly in the neighborhood, anyone else in the SE USA might wanna check out http://www.auctiongamesales.com/

My vote goes for Missile Command. That was the one game that I could always attract a crowd playing.

I can't really pick a single favorite, so...
Gauntlet. My friends and I used to have a blast playing this in the basement arcade in Dutchess hall at Dutchess Community College. "Wizard, is about to die!"
Joust. This was the reason I bought an Atari 7800. Wouldn't have, if the ColecoVision version had been completed and released.
Mr. Do!. If only the ColecoVision version had been better.
Snap Jack. In the old town arcade, what a game! Since it was a Universal arcade game, I was hoping the ColecoVision would have it. But who knows, maybe out there, waiting for discovery...
Tempest and Major Havoc.

All-time faves: NARC, SF2 Champion Edition, Forgotten Worlds, Double Dragon, Smash TV, Time Crisis.
Currently it's Golden Tee, MoCap Boxing, Rescue 911 and those damn MegaTouch machines.

Try every arcade game in existence. :P
Well, probably Donkey Kong. What can I say? I grew up on DK. But now, there are a huge shiteload of games that I play religiously on MAME. Excuse me, it's Rastan time. :D
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy is my all time favorite!
Psycho Penguin

The Simpsons, X-Men, and Pac Mania are right up there for me.

Without a doubt: Ms. Pac Man.
I used to play that ALL the time growing up (still do through my Namco Museum disc for Playstation and my TV Games joystick - which for some reason the control is vague to say the least especially on the up/down movement.)

Somewhat of a tossup for me between several games...Arabian Magic, Jackie Chan, Golden Axe RODA, Fighter's History, and Rygar.
The first arcade game I can remember playing was Bump n Jump...my oldest brother worked at an arcade, and we went in before it opened. He opened up the machine and put in four credits for me, but I wasn't even 10 years old at the time and royally sucked at it. :D

Wow, this is hard. So I've pick my top four.
Star Wars Arcade Trilogy
I loved having people stand around watch me as I out-dueled Darth Vader in a lightsaber battle. And the graphics were great too. I'm very dissappointed that this game never got released for the Dreamcast as it was originally planned for.
Spy Hunter
I was the fucking king of the road. I became super obsessed with this game and it's music. I always wondered if you could actually beat it because I've gotten super far with no ending in site.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
I was going to say Gauntlet but this 4-player game was more fun to me. Plus, all 4 players weren't fighting over food or power-ups. But thats because they were more abundant in this game.
Tekken Tag Tournament
No other game had me going to various different malls just to seek out new competition. And the lines to play this game could be anywhere from 3-20 minutes long. Fun times indeed.

Galaga is probably my all-time favorite but several others rank right up there:
the Simpsons & TMNT (just for really fun/mindless button mashing goodness)
Super Off-Road (nitro boosts, baby)
Hogan's Alley (first gun game to play at an arcade back in the late-80s)
