View Full Version : Found an abused XBox 360

It's that time of year, I suppose. I found an XBox 360 out by the curb the other day alongside an old mattress and various other appliances in questionable condition. (Yes, I know, bedbugs are a constant threat, but so is unsatiated curoisity.) Someone was really, really angry at this unit, though, and there are some pretty big dents in it. Having pried it open reveals that it actually survived reasonably well; the ominous rattling sounds seem to be caused merely by broken plastic bits of the case. However, it did take one nasty hit to the edge of the motherboard.

To be clear, this is a Japser motherboard; that's one of the inductors (?) on the right side of http://beta.ivc.no/wiki/index.php/File:Xbox_360_revisions_jasper_motherboard.jpg there in the corner.

I've never seen anything with this kind of damage. Do you think it's worth trying to borrow a power supply from someone to see if it still works? On that note, can you even switch one of these on without a faceplate?

Leave that shit for the rats and possums. A Jasper huh? That's the name of their rrod-fixed reiterations? Maybe MS should've used this technology from the beginning? Instead of trying to patch shit up as time goes on.

No, not hindsight. They knew very well they were releasing faulty consoles. That thing was where it belonged, with the bedbugs...

This reminded me of the time Frankie found a Wii in the trash: http://forum.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?167358-So-I-just-found-a-Wii-in-the-garbage

It may be 20/20, but they also shouldn't have been impatient assholes and knowingly released a system a year too early that wasn't properly vetted for issues that really was still in beta, early beta at that, given the revisions that had to be done to get to the Jasper. The fact the media and the xbox owners were so fanboyed up over microsoft they refused to throw them under the bus for it always was mindblowing to me. You'd think when you were on your 3rd, 4th, 7th system you might just get a bit pissed off, even if they allowed those open warranties as it was just unacceptable any way you hash it.

They knowingly released it as is, which wasn't a first. I know it's not as known, but I worked at Midway in 2001/02 and saw when this thing was in test months before it was put to retail and was familiar using it. There were known problems people like us would report back to them and they would NOT fix the things both in test units (which get a shit ton of hours at a time of use) but left them in the xbox when it launched. The drive motors/alignment was crap and it would resurface (ie: scratch) circular deep scratches into discs on a percentage of systems. It probably would have been resolved if they forced the disc to stop entirely with a wait when opening the door...but also because how the track on it sat if it was an incline it would file away too being off center. Another known problem was a shoddy power supply (inside the system in the back) where it would pop, and not just a fuse pop, but it would blow enough that it would heat up, spark a little (not seen) but fire happened because it would smoke just wrecking the thing and we had a few that did it too and I recall that happening on sales units. I know like the 360 in time they resolved it, but to launch 2 of 2 of their consoles at the time, early, with real hazards with a fuck it attitude to the consumer was inexcusable to me which is why I never have nor will ever own a MS console as they don't give a shit as long as they're paid.

Maybe the PS3 would have dominated the market and ruined any chance of the 360 getting off the ground, and everyone would now be saying that they were overly cautious.

If we could possibly get back to the matter at hand, is it possible to switch on an XBox 360 without a faceplate? Googling suggests it's possible for the 360 Slim, but I'm getting nowhere with this model; some sites indicate that the console has a senor to detect whether the faceplate has been removed. and won't operate at all without one.

yep it is, you just need something skinny and aim for the gold button thingy in the middle of all the leds that make up the "ring of light" (4 leds in a circle)

I'd use something non metallic.

I've found lots of game stuff in the trash, nothing really actually trash.
things like TG-16's, ti 99/4a's, dreamcast's. you know, those things that don't hold any value what so ever

Welp, finally managed to get my hands on a PSU today. It turns out that yes indeed, prodding the center of the lights will activate the unit – and in this case brought up the good ol' RROD.

Considering the damage, it's a little surprising anything happened. I doubt any mythical repair technique will save this thing. I'm sure I can find someone who will take it for free.
