View Full Version : Nintendo World Championships 2015
That's right, a new Nintendo World Championships after 25 years! Going to E3? You can participate as a contender!
Usually, I don't care about E3 anymore. It long ago lost its luster for me. But this changes things. This alone would be enough for me to wish to go to E3. But you add in all the other awesome stuff which Nintendo has planned for the time period, and I would LOVE to go this year.

I thought E3 was restricted to media heads? What games are in the competition, classic or modern? I'm guessing some tournament with this overhyped Splatoon thing. That video was god awful...

They disabled comments on the second commercial. What the hell are they even thinking? They need to fire their advertising company.

That's my concern, how is this going to be a 'world championships' if it's done at the E3. That hasn't been open for over 10 years where you could walk up and buy or preorder a ticket off the street. Hell they were hard to get around the tail end of the 90s and early 00s when I got into it with a legit pass, but you could buy a walk in for a few hundred if I recall but they stopped it.
I want to know how this will work, what games, and what classes too? I mean Nintendo has two competing eras now thanks to their history and the VC along with the current. They can't just put smash bros in there and make it another of those annoying contests or Mario Kart, it will need variety. The old game was driving, platform, puzzle for the points. Maybe they'll do something similar with the old and the new for two tiers, or some odd mix, who knows. I'd not be surprised if they age tiered it again.

Prelims will be held at Best Buys across the country, finals at E3. So it won't be open to the public, just those qualifiers who are invited guests.
Preliminary rounds will be held at Best Buy locations on May 30th. The final competition is on June 14th, which is two days before E3 and on a Sunday. You can see that date listed in the video at the 2:52 mark.
And don't worry - Nintendo will be live-streaming the whole June 14th contest on YouTube and/or its Web site.
More details should be available as we get nearer to May 30th at [ http://e3.nintendo.com/ ].

Um, May 30th is getting closer and I still can't find anything on which Best Buys they're holding these things at or what games will be in the competition? What's the prizes? What's the big secret Nintendo? It's like they didn't plan this thing out.
I'd be happy to drive to a local Best Buy and bust some ass. If only I had more info to go on, they do realize people have jobs and need to do a little of planning ahead? If it is simply a Splatoon tournament, then they can go fuck themselves.

It might have been a snap decision. I know back in the area of 90 we didn't have the net so flyers and junk had to go out months in advance, but in this day of rapid information it does stink of being rushed or just lazy not discussing more details including things like the locations, tiering of the contest, prizes locally and out in LA up to the grand prize winner. I mean this whole thing has less than a month to play out.

I just found the info online: https://games.yahoo.com/news/nintendo-world-championships-coming-eight-154139152.html
The qualifiers will only be available at 8 Best Buy locations across the country and entries are capped at 750 per store. You will be competing in Ultimate NES Remix on the 3DS. The closest location to me is New York but I have a feeling people are going to start camping out there tomorrow night so I don't plan on going there. It's too bad because I actually have Ultimate Nes Remix, it was my platinum reward from Club Nintendo.

Kind of a lie but it is a play off the 1990 show. That is far too limiting with just 8 locations. I know there likely will not be one close enough for me to even make the attempt which is a shame as I own the physical real release of that 3DS game. I would love to take a crack at it even if I know I wouldnt be an overall winner most likely. As a kid I wanted a crack at the old show so this would have been great. Problem is I have a job and a life and camping out like a tool a larger distance from home to maybe get a shot isnt happening.

This whole thing reeks to me. I'm sorry. If it is a REAL competition then let people know what is going on. Seems like a last minute decision by Reg, and the little dream world he's constantly living in.
Ultimate NES Remix? Great game but what exact minigames are in the competition?
I wouldn't be surprised if Reg presented the trophy to himself...

Wow major Nintendo fail. If they do this again it needs to be in better circumstances with decent places to qualify and more time to do so.
1990 went for a few months if I remember correctly. Sure it's a different day and age but at the same time it's not so different to only have less than a month to do the whole thing.
Tanooki
05-20-2015, 09:22 AM
The 1990 original did go on for many months, it was not a 30 day affair. They opened up a crap ton of locations at malls and other locations all across the US and they did tiers after tiers to get far more than 750(this one in 2015 has) people out of the way to cart the best out to LA at Universal Studios to do the thing.
It's nice they're doing it, but it's also an insult to those old enough to remember or have tried for the original. 30 days, 1 game for 3DS, 750 spots, and only 6 places across this huge country to do that. I call shenanigans on it. Unless by some miracle they do it in my town I'm not bothering. I can't see myself driving 2-4 hours to Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Nashville or St Louis if it's hosted there with such limited spaces, gas and time involved just getting there, not to mention practicing up before hand. A real shame. I'll still watch and try and enjoy it, but it will never have the honest luster of the original with the mishandled setup. I think they did a snap decision to do this as they had nothing new (huge) to show this year with the NX put off a year for a first unveiling, Zelda kicked well into 2016 (since they look at years from April1 to Mar 31st), and things being fairly quiet. I'm sure they will bring the games, probably more so on the 3DS front, but they were going to take a pasting and be ignored this year due to Sony and MS too, and this is a big easy attention grabbing event to suck that off of them.
The 1 2 P
05-20-2015, 07:55 PM
For those that didn't read the link the 8 locations are:
5001 Northern Blvd.
Long Island City, New York
10760 NW 17th St.
Miami, Florida
900 E. Golf Road
Schaumburg, Illinois
12905 Elm Creek Blvd. N
Maple Grove, Minnesota
9378 N. Central Expressway
Dallas, Texas
3675 Pacific Coast Highway
Torrance, California
1717 Harrison St.
San Francisco, California
2214 S. 48th St.
Tacoma, Washington
According to mapquest getting to the New York store would take me somewhere between three and three and a half hours. I really wish they would have made this open to more stores instead of shutting so many states out completely.
Tanooki

I'm 333mi from the closest one in IL at a 5 1/2 hour drive. They can go to hell. There are large chunks of the country being strongly excluded with that list. Definitely not going to participate now. Not much of a world (let's be serious 'US') Nintendo championship here when you have so few locations so many hundreds of miles and a lot of hours apart. The time on what I put would be going at an ideal speed not accounting for weirdness, easily more than 1/2 a day blown just driving.

Ultimate NES Remix? Great game but what exact minigames are in the competition? There is a "Championship mode" built right into the game: it's Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario. A bit lame, really. (Considering the game's been out for a while now, optimal strategies have probably been hashed, re-hashed, and re-re-hashed to death.)
It's nice they're doing it, but it's also an insult to those old enough to remember or have tried for the original. That would surely be a minuscule fraction of the game-purchasing public.
Bughuntertf
05-22-2015, 08:25 PM
I think, given the late announcement, low levels of players allowed in, requirements for entering, and the fact there's only 8 locations to qualify at across the US that the Championships probably didn't have months of planning time - I call two months, three at the most and one at the least.

I think Nintendo is just trying to have something cool to stream on there Treehouse presentation. They're not looking to dump a ton of money trying to find the greatest video game player in the world. If I don't have work I'll go to one that's near.

The more I see this brought up the more I think there's only one clear answer to this unless there's a total shake-up at the show. Nintendo is desperate with little to nothing of value to show for the WiiU and the 3DS/New3DS can not carry them alone. With the DENA deal, NX, and Zelda all being blacklisted for discussion this year, they have crap and they need attention badly. What better way to draw people away from Sony and MS to host an anniversary 'World' Championships using yet again old NES games via their 3DD remix package. It's cheap, which they need with their money problems, easy to setup due to their Best Buy partnership, and it can be done in quick order with little planning in advance. It's sad, but this has to be the most logical answer to it or damn near it.

Does the winner get a gold NES Remix cartridge?
Nah, they get a Wii U system. How else are they going to get them into people's homes.
And as half-ass and last minute as this competition is turning out to be it could have been worse: they could have made gamers compete using the Wii U version of NES Remix instead of the 3DS version.
FieryReign
05-27-2015, 09:09 PM
A fucking WiiU system is the grand prize? Is it gold-plated? You could simply go out and buy one and it would probably cost the same as the gas money people will have to spend to drive to one of these Best Buy locations. I can just see the winners systems being sold on ebay the day after the competition.
L<<k R@re NWC 2015 WiiU system: $100,000
It's a bit late for Nintendo to be pulling April Fools Jokes.
Tanooki
05-27-2015, 09:51 PM
That would be the only value, sell the system along with a piece of provenance. If they do a little trophy and letter thing like in original, just keep that for yourself. If the WiiU has no custom anything to it at all, unless you're that local, the cost alone in driving to the nearest (hah) one or the funds needed around the trip out west won't be made up. At least in the original you got the special cart, a terrible car if you were #1 and some other notable goodies, not just a retail box system. That's kind of depressing, there has to be more to it than that.
Also I remember hearing that there live stream last year pulled some pretty impressive numbers with Smash and Xenoblade. So I wouldn't take it as anything more then them putting on some more programming.
Dashopepper, I give a +1 insightful mark to you. I think that you hit the nail on the head with this statement.

I was being cynical about the Wii U being the grand prize. I have no idea what the prize will be but knowing Nintendo and how badly they handled the last few years of Club Nintendo in the US(since this competition is pretty much US only) they will probably give the winner some download codes for a handful of e-shop games....on the Wii U....even though the contest will be competed on the 3DS.

I did. Was a pretty fun time despite the early rain. Not much fanfare except for a few bloggers or YouTube guys or whatever you call them. Was at the Shaumburg il, one. One guy or gal was from Ohio with a Dr Mario licence plate. I had a decent run of 1.7 million points having practiced for the last couple days. But nothing too special. You filled out a form, played one of 10 3ds for 6min21sec and left without knowing anyone else's score. Was a decent day but you wouldn't want to have traveled very far for it unless you knew you're pretty damn good.

They didn't tell you other scores because apparently it's rigged. There was a dude on NA who seems to have gotten screwed out of his victory. Letting him have only one crack at it, but letting others after him have multiple tries. That's Nintendo for ya.
Tanooki
06-01-2015, 10:17 PM
It's also in line for people at NA to feel entitled and complain a lot, probably would look too much into it. :)
Clearly it's fixed though considering the limits on the users, the lack of locations too, and the closed nature of not showing what all people are doing or your standing. Sure anyone (like NA guy whoever it was) can say they felt they win, but knowing without really knowing is much like that crude comment about crap in one hand, hope in the other, see which fills up first.
Speaking of, seems the finalists now will be looking forward to a range of games in LA, one of them being the original Legend of Zelda for the finals according to the Nintendo Direct from today.

Seems this guy was just happy to be a runner-up, rather than screaming of foul play. They changed the rules on the fly. But people just looove them some Nintendo, so they're getting a pass here. Once again...
Tanooki
06-02-2015, 11:51 AM
That was entirely foul play. Realistically the first score should have been the only score, and who knows which of those two if either would have had it. The fact the so-called winner had his friends crowd the runner up who wrote the article, talking, hovering, trolling the shit out of him should have been a DQ for playing mind games. That stuff was NOT allowed 25 years ago, just your own mental issues to sink you, not hovering losers.
The fact his over 5M score would have won most (all?) the other locations that played makes it an even weaker setup and exposes a huge problem. If you have say 6 locations, at one someone gets that 6M score, the runner up gets in the 5s, and the other locations roll in around the 2s and 3s.... who's to say that guy with the 5 would not be the overall winner out in LA? Clearly Dr Mario is random, but is it so random every other player got bad boards every attempt/single attempt they had nation wide? I doubt it highly. There is no world champion by any legit measurement if that's how they handle things. The fact the writer appears to maybe be the 2nd best player in the competition nationally but is excluded from the final contest totally settles as foul play in design.
The Nintendo World Championships were confirmed for a 3 p.m. PT / 6 p.m. ET start time on June 14. While the full lineup of games will be announced the day of, The Legend of Zelda (NES) will be one of the competition's games.

The Nintendo World Championships is pretty much a bunch of gamers that are worse than you. No, I'm pretty sure he is that bad. If nothing else, the guy he was playing against was the winner of last year's Nintendo Smash tournament, so he is super skilled at that game. Besides, Reggie playing SSB4 was a method to promote the Street Fighter Ryu DLC for Smash and to be silly rather than to have a real bout. It's too long, but I watched the closing battle between the last two and that one geek was just mauled by the other guy badly. It was fun seeing the creativity of the fun house making some wacked out just messed up stages in Mario Maker. It shows that as obtuse and stubborn as the Japanese branch is, that the US one (leadership aside) really does pay attention to the fans and the underground stuff. Mario Maker is basically a big wet kiss to all the fans who make, do their own, or buy someone elses pre-made hacks for existing carts you find all over the place online. So so many of them dig into the SMB lineage of the NES/SNES doing some insane stuff and I could see that insanity in some of those designs.

They sucked. They were downright abysmal. If I was to guess, I'm guessing the same people that were playing Super Metroid were the same people in the Miiverse. They had to literally be told to use their missiles when just about all of them were stuck on the first part of Mother Brain. I'm sure many of us could have not only escaped the planet faster, but also saved those birds before the one who actually completed it survived. Three or four people actually died even though the game started them with 100% of the items collected with full health directly in front of Mother Brain.

As far as Tusk goes, that sucks, he was wronged on that. You don't tell someone one thing, then change the rules so they are setup to lose (and do.) Pretty sad a glitch ended your run there too BSG as that's not your fault.
I have to admit though, one thing if anything the NWC reminds me of, I need to spend more time on the stuff I've kept. There are games I haven't cracked open in years, maybe even a decade or more at a serious level and I have due to my reignited GB/C interest stuff that still needs to be done too. Super Metroid is a fantastic game, still the best of the line though Zero Mission is no slouch either right on its heels. I really should play that SNES game again, and even earlier this year I got a cool find on a CIB Metroid Fusion which is lying around too.

those shots weren't nwc competitors, they were people who had bought SM off the eshop and were playing it for the first time. it was a funny meme
I won't go into details, but Nintendo did make things up to tusk, he lives in LA and he was at the event and he was the first person to shake my hand after the event was over. He is a good dude and good things will come out of this. I have been a sponsor of the CTWC for the past few years.
I loved the format of the tournament, it played out like a card game. (a 2-7 offsuit will beat a pair of aces 11% of the time) Numbers was the unofficial Number 1 seed going into this thing. His all time high score on NES Remix CE was an astounding 11 million (number 1 on the online leaderboard for months), and his qualifier score of 4.7 million was an "off game" for him. He truly had the best skills among the finalists, but he even admitted in his reddit ama that had he had to play Super Metroid in an elimination round, he wouldn't have won as he had never played the game before.
I am happy that Nintendo included their old titles in a nationwide tournament, and that I could be a part of it. The likelyhood of this happening again in the future is pretty slim. My inner 13 year old got to live out a moment I didn't have in 1990, I couldn't be happier.
I am sure they will have more competitions, but the focus will be on the modern stuff... rightfully so, current titles are their bread and butter.

I agree with you on that, all the good will around the hiccups made it clear they can milk the NWC format for future events with their modern stuff to get a lot of good will and good press which they desperately need.
Whatever all they did for Tusk that's good, he's a nice enough person when I've dealt with him before and much more watching it with others, he did not deserve to get hosed like that.
I would have loved to have done the NWC but The Wizard was as much as I got of it and the NP read alongs in the day. I was furious they didn't have more locations for this as my closest one I think was a 10-12 hour drive round trip for it and I couldn't do it. I was out in CA when this thing ran its course, had I been able to bracket into this with some luck and skill the timing could not have been better. I wish they'd have had a lot more postings other than the 6 or so they had as I would have done a couple hour drive but not a half day. Given it was based off their classic library and the 3DS version no less which I felt didn't have the lag issues the WiiU version very much had (why I quit on it) it could have been a blast.
