There were a lot of Batman games for all types of consoles. My first Batman game experience was on the NES and I have yet to find a retro favorite that is better. Which was your favorite and why?

The first Batman game is awesome, probably my favorite as well.
I believe the 2nd to last boss's name is Firebug.

Sunsoft's first Batman game is definitely my favorite Batman game ever. Heck, it's worth playing for the tunes alone, but everything else is great too. Well, unless you want an accurate retelling of the movie, haha.

Batman for the NES is my favorite, but if you weigh all things considered from the pre-"Christopher Nolan" Batman-era, Batman Returns for the SNES is likely the best overall game. It's a great beat'em up, it has great graphics, and it follows the plot of the move fairly well.

That game is good but the Sega Genesis Batman that follows the movie is my second favorite and it is pretty accurate also.

I will probably be in the minority, but I really like the PC-Engine Batman game. Part puzzle, part action, all fun!

I played quite a few but gave up paying for them after the gamecube era and I still feel the NES and GB versions beat there rest of the original Batman game.

For so many years, I thought nothing would ever touch Sunsoft's NES Batman game. It was just excellent as could be.

Batman's one of the few series that somehow avoided the licensed game curse, theirs very few really bad Batman games I can think of but sunsoft's first Batman game is my favorite Batman game and one of my favorite platformers in general.

I think most retro batman games are pretty awful ...the character didn't get a proper servicing until the Rocksteady games IMHO. But as games, I liked the first Sunsoft game on NES, the early Gameboy batman game, the driving sections of Batman Returns on the Sega CD, and the Konami beat me up Batman Returns on SNES for its mood.
I think I spent fifty 1992 bucks on the Lynx version of Batman Returns. Sigh.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin and Batman Returns, both by Konami, both on the SNES.
The Adventures of Batman and Robin is a action/platformer game that controls well and has reasonable difficulty. You have many of Batman's gadgets that are not only useful, but sometimes required. The platforming sections are good when needed. Bosses have a bit too much health imo, but they're decent battles if a little easy. A little harder with more health would have been better. *edit* I meant less health.
Batman Returns is based off the movie and the game mainly plays as a beat em up. Imo, it's the best side scrolling beat em up, being better than the game it's a clone of, Final Fight. If you haven't played the game I'd highly recommend it, especially if you're a beat em up fan. It has additional stages in between the main beat em up parts, one is platforming side scrolling section where you use your batarang to attack enemies and you can now die in a single life falling into a pit, while the other has you in the batmobile exactly like in the Sega CD game. Unlike a lot of beat em ups created after Final Fight(Streets of Rage 3 as a prime example,) while the bosses are very difficult and have a lot of priority during attacks that kill in only a few hits, the bosses don't have some of the insane amount of invincibility frames. If you do an attack that you're sure should have hit the bosses, then they hit the bosses, the boss doesn't have some god like invincibility or super jump that instead immediately sends them to safety.
For me, it's definitely Batman Returns for the Sega CD, and I attribute 100 percent of that to the masterful score by Spencer Nilsen.
Sure, the action levels were absolutely horrible, but the driving sections were awesome...
The music was so good, that I would try my damndest to play the platform levels to hear all the musical tracks, but man, those platform levels were absolutely god awful.

As a kid I absolutely LOVED and played the holy hell out of Batman Returns for Game Gear. I take the nostalgia glasses off, and it's still a great game. Even though I have never even gotten past the first level, I can't stop playing Adventures of Batman and Robin for MegaDrive. The hardest game I have ever played, but the music is amazing, and pushes the MegaDrive damn near to the limit graphically. It's basically a "ground based" horizontal shmup in my eyes.

As much as I liked the NES Batman game, I like the Genesis Batman better. It had better game play and graphics, and for me was just more fun.

The first Batman on NES was a fun platformer. But I also hold a special place for Batman Returns on the NES as well. It followed the movie story as well, the boss fights were fun, music was decent as well. Main downside was the later stages seemed to go on forever with enemies that were HP sponges that can floor you with a few good hits.

Is Lego Batman old enough to count? Sadly I've had some horrible gaming experiences with NES X-men games and that put me off of all other superhero games for years and years as I had assumed all superhero games sucked. It wasn't until the Lego series that I got back into superhero games and enjoyed stuff like DC Online, Teen Titans, Arkham Asylum, several Marvel titles who's names escape me right now.
