If you already have a chipped console is the swap necessary?

No but there is no point flashing this because modchip has 100% compatibility with backups, but yes you could just put the flasher cd without swap trick and flash an action replay for a friend or if you have an additional saturn it could be useful.

I did this at the beginning of the year and I love it. No more swapping!

Actually, that is the point. I have two saturns, one round and one oval buttoned. The oval was never able to be modded but if I can make a AR cart with the round and use it on the oval, this serves a good purpose.

Btw saturn mod chips available now (v3) works fine with both model 1 and 2, but its cheaper and easier to use a flashed AR, the only annoying part is losing memory card function but the saturn community are working on restoring it and the cheats in a future update. I hate swapping the AR with anothet one just for saves, wears the crappy cartridge port.

Does it have to be an AR or will a GameShark work?

Maybe but it's big family brought to different regions by different companies.
USA (InterAct), Japan (Karat), and Europe (Datel) each had multiple revisions.

That's not counting the EMS versions.

Have you tried booting it open with a game in it without the cardboard piece? Because as far as I know no Saturns use that door latch as the sensor that checks if the door is closed, you do have to take them apart to get to the door closed sensor behind the back left side of the drive door. I think your Saturn might have already been modded to have that sensor permanently closed.
