My life has been made. SEGA has officially announced new SEGA 3D Classics; 3D Power Drift, 3D Puyo Puyo Puyo 2, 3D Maze Walker, and 3D Fantasy Zone II!

The full version of the teaser art we posted yesterday has been released (isn’t Arle adorable?), showing that the new physical SEGA Reprint Archives 2 collection will feature Power Drift and Puyo Puyo Tsu, with the bonus games this time around being Maze Walker and Fantasy Zone II; the Master System versions! Whether these games are to be released internationally is unknown, but honestly by this point I think we’ll be seeing at least Puyo and Power Drift on the western eShop soon.

More information on the new physical collection was released yesterday, but it’s damn cool to see not one but four new games for the collection!

I’m pretty ecstatic right now, but let us know what you think in the comments!

Whoa, Power Drift on 3DS sounds amazing.

They better bring downloadable 3D Power Drift to western eShops, NA and EU. Japan gets everything.

Too bad that the 3DS is region locked. :( But assuming that it heads West eventually, good news. :)

Now if they'd just do Turbo Outrun. And Nintendo really needs to release a 3DS Player for the Wii U so that these arcade classics can be enjoyed on the big screen.

While far from exciting, Puyo Puyo 2 and Maze Walker are both new, too [Edit: Add 3D Fantasy Zone II, which apparently is the 8 bit original]. I'd love to see a pack be released with all the 3D SMS titles in the West eventually when they're finished. And there's a list floating around that was supposedly extracted from Gunstar Heroes 3D that lists more SMS and Genesis titles (Along with Puyo Puyo 2 and Maze Walker).

But it's the news that a new arcade game is being ported that excites me. These console conversions aren't doing much for me, especially since I can't see in 3D and it's largely material that has been regularly rereleased in recent years.

Takes a rarity like the 3D Master System games for me to give a 3D Classics console title much attention. Especially is nice for someone such as myself, since some of these games like Maze Hunter lacked a 2D display mode in their original form. That limitation presumably won't be present here.

With how they continue to impress, I wonder if a 60fps/3D conversion of Outrunners is out of reach on this hardware?

I'd of bet against Power Drift even being possible not so long ago, so now I'm not so sure. And while I don't know what hardware they both ran on, if they can manage Power Drift, I'd say that it's now safe to say that Super Monaco GP is certainly within reach.

Regarding Power Drift being possible (now we can say it is) I'd say the toughest work for M2 was probably already done when they got Galaxy Force II to work, from the same arcade board. It was especially hard because they ported not only the arcade version, but PS2's Neo Classic version with much higher resolution assets.

BTW another Sega fan site picked up the news:

Physical Puyo game without the new artstyle and gimmicks is nice. Still even a translated eShop release would be miraculous.

I was curious what existing releases from this line won't be on cartridge in Japan after this collection appears. Assuming nothing is added before then that isn't slated for this upcoming collection, I believe that this is the list.

Afterburner II
Fantasy Zone II (Arcade)
Gunstar Heroes
Shinobi III
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Super Hang-On

I asked one of the M2 guys about it via Twitter a while back, and he seemed pretty doubtful that it could be done. The Multi 32 hardware is a pretty big step up over the Y Board, seeing as it's a single board set powering a double cabinet. Would be pretty incredible if they found a way to pull it off, though.
