The original Famicom is compatible with the AC adapters for Super Famicom, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Neo Geo (9-12v version only) and JPN Virtual Boy.

The specs are 9v, 1a, center negative polarity. There are a lot of older non-video game devices that use an adapter like this. Heck, I found what seems like a Canon battery charger AC adapter and it is 9.5v, 1.5a, center negative polarity. As long as the voltage isn't more than 12v, it'll work on the Famicom (or any of the above consoles).

Never use an NES AC adapter, it outputs AC9V and it will kill any DC-powered console you use it on. The NES has a rectifier which converts the AC into DC. The SNES and USA Virtual Boy use a custom barrel connector which isn't compatible.

ok so I wasn't the only one...

I always wonder that about super potato. I went years and years ago on an extended trip to japan.
the first time on the trip I got a famicom and a bunch of cheap games and they asked if I wanted an ac adapter and rf unit when I checked out as they were sold separately for what ever reason
the last time I went before we left the country I kinda went hog wild and they had a twin famicom that was in my price range but it came with everything $400 and many bags on the train. but I always wondered about the ac adapter for the first transaction

my guess is they have problems with the original ones.
