View Full Version : Which consoles were there televised infomercials for?

I only remember watching one for the Atari Jaguar. It was pushing the whole idea of "doing the math" and concluding that the Jaguar was the most powerful next gen system because it was supposedly 64-bit. It was absolutely AMAZING watching this preppy 90's archetypal dude-bro and token gamer girl (I believe there was a girl) trying to sell this fucking horrible POS system that no one at Atari even wanted. I ended up passing on a new Jaguar when they were being sold for only $20.00 at Kay*Bee Toys on the strength of that ad alone. Had I never seen it, I may have given in to curiosity and purchased one, but I was working offshore at the time and had tiny quarters with very limited space for consoles and games. If the Jaguar CD add-on were cheaper I probably would have bit.

I ended up getting one a year later for 20 bucks anyway, which I actually sent back to the vendor for a replacement unit because I didn't realize that the system doesn't power on without a cart in the slot. LOL I'm sure I'm not the only person to do that.

BTW, I'm asking as a North American. I honestly don't know what the infomercial situation was/is in other regions. Every product or no products might have them overseas or all I know.

Come on if you're going to slam the Jaguar ad, LINK IT. :D

That guy who talked to Bob is such a douche in the opening...horribly arrogant. Somehow our 16bit systems were garbage, funny how things ended up eh? I remember being up late night seeing this spot when it was new. It was bad even for then, but in a rubber monster bad to where it was funny if you knew who Atari was and what the Jaguar wasn't pulling off as it was comically ballsy. A fair statement I think would be no one else dared do this other than clueless Atari. Nintendo had their VHS ad tapes mailed to NP members or more often to review/press people for stuff, and Sega I'm sure did the same. Sony got in late enough not to be that damn stupid and just went with Sony Media shelping and lying to cut an advantage and used their own pressed CDs.

I had never seen this before. I... love it. So bad, but the host really does throw himself into his role with conviction at least. I like how unconvinced Bob is throughout unless there's a woman practically crawling on him. I'm trying to figure out what controller he's holding in the opening, as his hands have it mostly covered.

I can't believe that they made White Men Can't Jump a focal point. I have that game. It sucks really badly. They barely showed any actual footage of it... and most of what they did show was all of the 2D stuff. The girl in Cybermorph makeup actually made me laugh.

HOLY SHIT, this is way worse than I remember. I remembered it being more QVC styled than skit based. I guess I didn't bother to pay much attention back then.

I remembered another one, it's cut into 3 pieces on youtube and this link I'll provide lines them up -- Philips CDi also around a half hour too.

Not as horrible, but still horrible enough as it's an infomercial.

Sonic and Knuckles had a special on MTV. For whatever reason it took place on Alcatraz.

Probably Sega joking subtly how all their Genesis games have those rendered vertical bars for whatever reason.

The only one I remember seeing BITD was the CD-i one. Pretty sure I saw that a couple times at least.

Same, though I never actually sat and watched it, just a minute or two laughing at the ridiculousness and then changing the channel. For a while it seemed to be running quite regularly.
