8427Sinistron is a horizontal shooter on the Turbografx that typically gets compared to R-Type by people who have only played it a little bit. When it comes to pacing and challenge, that comparison holds water, but Sinistron eschews the pod mechanic so many games ape for its own unique gameplay hook; in Sinistron, your ship has a beak.
A long, pointed shield that runs roughly 2/3 the length of your ship, the beak can protect you from most enemy contact and fire, making you nearly invincible from the front and allowing you to ram enemies like a spear. That's not all, though. It can open to varying degrees, greating a risk/reward system for balancing your attack and defense. The wider the beak is open, the more and broader you fire, exponentially increasing your attack strength. However, this exposes more of your ship, making you increasingly vulnerable to the growin complexity of enemy fire and formation. It works prett great, too.
You also have a charge attack like, well, R-Type, as well as a handful of weapon powerups such as lasers or homing missiles.
I like Sinistron, as its unique mechanics set it apart in a saturated market. Have you played it?
