When did this shit happen? Not even kind of rare, better versions available... they even had 6 copies.

It happened when other common games with a name to them pressed well into the 1/2million-1mil+ mark started going for anything from $20-70 because of brand recognition. TMNT4 was like $15 a year ago and it's closer to that $70 mark now which is bs. It's the collectard+reseller factor in its finest because they can always find a sucker to pay more and more because either they don't know better or because they do and are afraid it will go up again next month or in a few months so it's better now then pay more later mentality which feeds into the dog chase tail thing going on that keeps biting people in the ass. It's why I backed off and don't bother anymore as it just went from insulting to unpalatable.

I was aware of the TMNT and other hikes, but Street Fighter II? What's next, Madden '93? Turtles in Time, while very popular, was never as common or disposable as SFII, which sold a bajillion copies before being almost immediately supplanted by Turbo and Super... I dunno. This is one of the most baffling I've seen yet.

TMNT has been 40+$ for a few years now.
20$ for street fighter at a retail store isnt insanity, not a great deal but what do you expect these days. Im no longer shocked when people ask $$ for common games. These arent the droids you are looking for, move along..

I still have my 25 year old copy, but I was so surprised because that same store typically has pretty decent prices. I recently picked up a Power Punch II on NES there for $15, Atari 2600 Track & Field with the controller a while back at $5, Intellivision Turbo at $2.99... they even had much harder to find games like On the Ball for the same system at $5.99. I had to do a double take, then started looking for more, and still. Just not a game I'dve pegged for this sort of thing.

For the record, I generally don't care about rising game prices. This one just took me off guard.

Introduce them to price charting. Average price right now is $8.76 for that same game and they go by what's been sold and at what price. A lot of them sell at a retail price.

I passed on a SNES jr with every hookup imaginable and Mario kart, all stars and donkey Kong for 60 bucks today at Goodwill so maybe it's us getting picky to

How much was that SNES and games though? Ebay reseller level or closer to what goodwill historically has considered old games worth? No point paying for it from them if it's full value, not like they paid a penny for it. :)

celery - I figured as much. Go back a year I'd be hotter about it, but I've been actively selling off what I do have I don't care to use anymore and laid off the older stuff damn near cold turkey. Won't avoid a nice price on something I'd use or I could flip to get something I can't afford I'd like, but trying to actively bother with being in the trenches of it I'm turned off of.

Rolling along since it's kind of SNES related, went to trade out some bunk cheap old games I couldn't move on ebay today (just a few+2 manga) at the local shop and I was mind blown seeing a Japanese game at the shop I totally forgot even existed. In Japan the Super Famicom releases of Ganbare Goemon 1 and 2 were put out as Kessakusen! Ganbare Goemon 1+2 on the GBA and they had it for $15. I had free trade value, so I totally snapped that up along side of 4 real cheapie GB/GBC/GBA games I had not used before too at no cost.

I've been wanting Goemon 2 again for years now, just was really not wanting to go down that Super Famicom road as unlike Famicom I've seen people getting US-Nintendo cart like on some stuff so I've ducked it. So cool having that game again after over 10 years and a nice bonus being that the old game you can save w/out passwords and all the minigames you can fire up from the main menu too. Stuff like that reminds me why I bother still and stick with all things Gameboy as there's so much to enjoy still.

$60. seems steep because in my mind a thrift, especially one reliant on donations, is only 1 step above garage/yard sale status.
I also already have a SNES Jr, I want another to mod (RGB) but I want a cheap one incase I eff it up, and I have 3 copies of all stars, 2 of Mario kart and donkey kong isn't one I particularly enjoyed

although thinking about it I don't know if it was 1,2 or 3 and I only played the first one. if it were 2 or 3 I guess I should buy it.

I was hoping it had megaman soccer in with it. that's the ONLY megaman game I don't have in us console physical format. portables I am missing a bunch
or maybe earth bound so I could have trade baited it at PRGE later this year

All things considered which stinks but $60 is pretty fair given what they could have easily cloned ebay and done pushing it over the $100 mark, but also it's kind of just greed and stupid to buy it if you already have the stuff. I'd have probably thought, nice not ripping people off, but left it as I have all that stuff too (unless it was DKC3, but even for one item in a lot, not worth it.)

I agree that Thrift Stores should generally price stuff cheaper, but what can you do when you come across this type of situation?
60$ is more than fair, those 3 games you can sell & make back the 60$ and keep the system. You can never have too many SNES consoles, and its always nice having extra SNES ac adapters.

i know i have 10 SNES systems accounted for, maybe more. but only one Jr. average price paid for any of the used systems i have mass quantities of is $5-$10, some times less
i usually have patience and find a good deal, most of the time its the last stop before the trash. but after a few decades you kinda have to just give in like i did with my nes top loader.

last October, ebay, broken system for $45. it works now but it was a chore.

I've seen Goodwill stores putting items like that in their auction case. They put several items in the case and have people put in private bids for them. They've caught on to the collector market trends.

No auction cases at the ones by me and so far i haven't seen any on Portland/Salem area either. Seems like a waste of everyone's time

It feels weird that SFII ended up being so cheap (normally). I saved every penny I made and paid $70 for it the day it was released.

Who here remembers the burning anticipation of SNES SFII? I even had dreams about it.

Oh, hell yeah. It wass just so big and one of the best home ports yet at the time. Trying to figure out special moves just got in my head, and all of the charcters looked awesome. Then, when Turbo came out... good god. For a short while Street Fighter II was the only game I wanted to play.

Oh I was all over it wanting it so bad I could taste it. I had been playing the arcade game at camp pretty furiously in the afternoons during the week along with MK1 secondarily as it just felt wooden compared. As those games popped up on the SNES I got them and played them for hours in a sitting just to learn each character and pop the difficulty up every notch per character as I went along. I never did drop it with Zangief and Dhalsim on 7/7 on the SNES (just 6) but the others I did. I'd then apply that pounding against the AI toward the arcade and other people and few would bother trying to pop a quarter up when I was there which was satisfying. I remember paying $65 for it which hurt and hurt also anger wise as everything else was always $50 or a bit less if it had been out for a little while. I tolerated it that one time because the amount of quarters I would have lost learning it on the cabinet I felt made up for it.

Home console fighters didn't appeal to me until psx era. They all felt, as you call it, wooden on 16 bit systems

I echo these sentiments. Hell I still fire up SNES SF2 to this day. It still plays well and it gives me that major nostalgic rush that Turbo and Super don't quite. And yes, it was the first super big and successful arcade home port. That's how we felt as kids!

So, I was out with the wife today, and saw SFII at the same place $5 higher, now $24.99 loose. What really got me, though, was this shit:

9865

That's a loose, rough copy of NHL '94 for Genesis at $9.99. What the shit?

A complete NHL '94 is worth $9.99, so that one isn't too shocking to me, even if it's a few dollars overpriced for a loose copy. It's not just any sports game--it's the greatest hockey game ever made, so it commands a little more. The far more offensive part is that they put the price sticker directly on the label. I hope that's the type that peels off perfectly (but it usually isn't)...I hate game stores that are so ignorant about their product and clientele that they actually do that and ruin the games.

I'd personally disagree that it's the best hockey game ever, though I do hear a lot of nostalgia for it. It's a game that I typically see at least 30 copies of when I hit a couple of stores... to me this is like trying to sell Atari 2600 Combat for ten bucks!

MF_Luder

Alright alright, you've both broken me down... I've played plenty of NHL '94, but not many other hockey games, so I won't claim that it's the best. Not enough sample data. But, I'll say this--it's generally considered the best hockey game ever made. I think that's a fair statement. I did pay $10 at one point for a boxed copy of the game, so I guess I'm one of the suckers that's contributing to that high price.

St Louis has always maintained a strong game store market. Even with my favorites long since closed, I've got at least 20 game stores within 20 minutes of my house, probably closer to 30.
