Question, Namco system 246/256 compatibility

I was considering getting some boards and doing my own arcade thing.
I really want a system 22 setup and I found the board set for ridge racer but I cant find the main unit.

so I got to looking at others and came across the system 246 and system 256 and I had a question about the games.

mainly, are system 246 games compatible with system 256 hardware?

I know they are both PS2 based but I didn't know if there was a backwards compatibility thing going on or not.
your probably noticing that all the stuff I am after are playstation based too...

Yes and no. 256 does support many 246 games, but not some of the earlier games. There are a ton of board variants. Here's a decent overview link:

hmm ok, seems most of the games I want to mess with work on both so I guess its just a matter of which is cheaper.
