View Full Version : So I bought a Super Famicom! Now What?

I have recently been re-collecting all of the SNES games I had as a kid, and stumbled upon the idea of buying myself some Super Famicom games. I bought a few and had it in my head to bust the tabs off my SNES, which a few friends told me to do.

I didn't want to in the end. I couldn't bring myself to do it, SNES stuff is so scarce nowadays I just felt bad breaking them.

So! I was looking at converter and the like... saw it's not a 100% success rate for a $45 add-on. Looked up Super Famicom's and I saw one for $56 complete with two controllers. So I bought one and it's on the way, I'm super excited!

I did some reading on using a S.F here and found that it would work with no issues at all. The plug will work in the outlet (and not to use a SNES adapter because it lets too much voltage into the system) because Japan has 100 and we run on 110. The plug is the same as well.

So i'm feeling really good about all of this... and then a friend knocks me down and says im all wrong and it will not work here. Did I really get this all wrong? Will I not be able to play on the system?

*** Also, if you recommend any super famicom games and also games that are in english/parital english would be amazing!
I have so far:
Cotton 100%
Street Fighter II Super
Super Puyo Puyo
Maka-Maka ( I know I won't be able to read, haha!)
Battle Soccer Gundam
Panel De Pon
Sailor Moon S Puzzle
Final Fantasy V (again, for collectors purposes. Can't speak Japanese)
Ranma 1/2 Chougi Ranbuhen
Ranma 1/2 Ougi Janken

I really want Paradious....

Your Super Famicom will work fine. As far as games go, kinda depends on what you're into, but here are a few I likec
Super Nazo Puyo
Violinist of Hameln
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Hashire Hebereke
Sugoi Hebereke
Psycho Dream
Choaniki: Bakaretsu Rantouden
Marvelous!
Front Mission: Gun Hazard
Sandora no Daiboken
Shin Nekketsu Kouha: Kunio Tachi no Banka
Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun
Pop'n Twinbee
Cosmo Gang: The Video
Rokudenashi Blues
Super Variable Geo
Kishin Korinden Oni
Lupin III
Donald Duck Mahou no Boshi
Bastard!
Mario & Wario
Mario's Super Picross
Itadaki Street 2
Road of the Paladin

That's a start, anyway. Also, anything Steven says when he finds this topic. That's a guy whi knows his Super Nintendo.

Thats so relieving. I should of trusted my gut first of all, my friend is prolly just jealous. Haha...
This looks like a solid list of recommendations. I'm gonna look around for them after checking them out on youtube. :)
Thanks so so so much!

He got ya covered. I never dipped that far in, I did the stupid move of removing the tabs and it long term jacked up my SNES because of the wobble factor it loosened up the pins in the thing to where I'd have to brace a game with some paper or any pivot would disconnect it just enough to lock up a game. I ended up selling it off as it was and replacing it with a SNES jr for a time, back with a real SNES though now mind you it's boxed up. I had this funny idea I'd use the Retron5 a lot, and once the interest wore a bit I stopped. :)

Japan uses a different RF feed but using an A/V cable on that SF you're fine, and power is power you're cool there too fortunately.

Games? Not going to read other suggestions or your own, but from memory I can recommend some stuff I once owned or at least enjoyed. Your job to read into it though. :)
SDF Macross Scrambled Valkyrie
Parodius any(1-3)
Lupin III
Popn Twinbee or Twinbee
Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventure
Ganbare Goemon 2 (best of all 3)
Sailor Moon and SM R
Sailor Moon S/Super S fighters
Armored Police Metal Jack
Zenki
Appleseed
Spriggan Powered
Dragon Ball Z Super Butoden 2
Gundam Wing
Hokuto no Ken 6 (I may still have a 20 year old translation of that game manual around somewhere I did in college)
Ranma 1/2 Super Battle (sequel to the hard battle the US got, not shitty controls like the uS game, plays like SF2)
Super VG
Jaki Crush (think Alien Crush TG16, it's related in that pinball series)
Cyborg 009
COTTON 100%
Hyper Iria
Megaman and Bass
Sailor Moon Another Story (rpg needs translation)
Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu (aka Kirby Star Stacker for SNES, was supposedly NOA's last release and killed it)
Mario & Wario

I had a healthy SNES (SFC) collection in the day. Around 90% of the above I owned, a few I wish I had lime Mario & Wario and Jaki Crush. I've been strongly considering doing this again, and yet again cart only, paper isn't worth it and is not readable mostly to me anyway.

Oh my goodness Ranma 1/2 hard battle is soooo bad. Worst port I have ever played. I knew the controls were completely borked! They HAD to be, I used to run a ROM on my computer of the game and I was never THAT bad at it.
I just bought the S.F. one for $6 on ebay haha!

So many good suggestions, I have so much to chew on now. Thanks for also putting which ones are hard to play due to language as well! <3

I've written up thoughts on several of these in this thread if you want to know more about accessibility, style, etc. Not exactly reviews, just an excuse to talk about games I play:

May help with some I listed.

Edit: Oh yeah! Super Gussun Oyoyo!

mega man 7, x, x2, x3 for SFC.

the reason I list these is because they have become cost prohibitive to get US versions where as Japanese versions are going up but are far cheaper
of course replace mega man with Rockman and what ever number and your golden.

as an example
current average selling price for X3 is $200 (https://www.pricecharting.com/game/super-nintendo/mega-man-x3?_ga=1.130315081.797949841.1440838694)
I managed to get a copy of Rockman X3 at Portland retro gaming expo last year for $20 and they guy had stacks of them.

Hiya guys! I got my Super famicom and Super nintendo both set up nicely in my TV shelf. Prior to this set up, I was using the upstairs tv temporarily and everything was working great. The SNES and SF were both looking great, having no difficulties with sound and reading carts.

So when i moved them downstairs to my game room, the super famicom's image is skipping whenever something loads up on the screen. ( title screen, next screen after a transition) :bawling:

So i tried changing the input 1 with input 2, and it still did it. I tried putting it in the component port and it was all black and white, with no screen skipping.
The SNES is having no issues whatsoever with its new home, no skipping or problems at all.

What could be wrong?!

Where can I get Rockman X3 for $20 or less? I've never seen a copy in that range as of yet. I don't even know how the hell I got my X2 for under $20 for that matter.
