Here are some games wherein I can get to the final boss, but can't beat him.

NES
Arkista's Ring - Goddamn ninjas
Conquest of the Crystal Palace- I reached the final boss once, didn't do it. I've played a couple more times but never reached the end again. Some of the bosses are tough as nails in that game.
Rygar- I fought him three or four times and said screw it.
Shadow of the Ninja - I only made it the the end once or twice, never beat him. I know I can do it if I sit down and play it again.
Wrath of the Black Manta- reached the boss once, a long time ago, and I don't think I've played it since.

Neo Geo
Sonic Wings 2- To hell with that monkey
King of Fighters 96 to 2001 - To hell with Rugal
To hell with all those Neo Geo games that make the final boss so far above the established difficulty curve.

There are probably more, I'll add them when I think of them.

Also, share some tips if you can beat a boss that someone lists.

On Arkista's Ring, there's a special item that stuns ninjas for awhile. Save up those toward the end, and have a couple of health power-ups and an attack power-up for the fight with the Shogun. There's a permanent item you can randomly get that makes you immune to all projectile attacks as well, so be on the lookout.

Rygar-just hop up onto the platform Ligar is on and whale on him while occasionally hopping his shots. He goes down quickly if you're leveled up.

KOF-in 1999-2001, get comfortable with the defensive roll move. Roll through his attacks for a combo or throw. Good timing on those can get you through Rugal's obnoxious attacks.

Only one. Advance Wars final battle against Sturm. I don't know how many attempts I made to try and finish but it was atleast a few dozen atleast and being a strategy game, ranged from 15-30+ minutes each.

Two which immediately come to mind: Sub Terrania and Radiant Silvergun

I loved playing Sub Terrania, and could 1-life all the way to the last level, but no matter how many times I tried, I never beat it.
Radiant Silvergun I've beaten, but only thanks to the Saturn version's weapon level save, even then I'd get my ass handed to me by the last boss.

Ah two more, both on Sega CD.
Silpheed, I'd swear the last boss ship is un-winnable (but now with youtube we can see it beaten). Silpheed was another game I had wired - one life up to the last boss no problem, yet tried every weapon combination and had lots of weapon energy to keep firing as fast as possible, never did beat it.

Eternal Champions Challenge form the Dark Side, I beat once out of dozens of fights against the last boss. (I never was very good at fighting games though)

Dragon Quest VI
Pretty much I didn't learn the specific skills from the correct classes needed to beat the final boss and I don't want to take the time to go back and grind the skills out because up until that very point (which is a very, very long time if you have ever played this game) it was never a problem.

Good topic.

Mega man 5 is the only entry in the NES series I can't beat. Even though the first game is technically more difficult I somehow completed it yet every time I return to 5 I'm somehow with few or no energy tanks for the last wily encounter. The bouncing balls he shoots out are random in their oscillation and forget it if you touch his tank even once. I think I've only gotten to its second form twice.

I got stuck on Metroid Prime 2 on the final boss - had too little health or energy, or something - and never picked it back up again.

Final Fantasy 12 - the last big dragon of the special missions way at the end of the game. It was this one beast with an incredible amount of life bars which took a long time to beat and you could actually save during the fight. The last hour of the fight you couldn't save anymore, and although I had high levels from grinding and grinding this THING just knocked me out and my party was dead sometimes in minutes; and this after intense 30 minutes of fighting and HOURS of preparing the last stage of the long fight. :)

I still have the save files, but I never went back and don't intend to. I admit defeat. Compared to this Dragon I'm a wuss. :)

PS: FF12 is one of my favorite RPGs. Just a fantastic game.

Resident Evil: Revelations is the only one I can think of. Maybe I just don't have the same patience or reflex as I did when I was younger, but this boss is aggravating as hell. I ended up shelving the games a few years ago after trying to beat the boss off and on for 2 or 3 days. It's the only part of the game that gave me any trouble.

Another boss that caused me to shelf a game is the giant robot gorilla in Binary Domain. It's not a final boss, but it may as well be, because I'm freakin' done with that game.

The Red Star. Pure bullet hell boss that requires twitch reflex and the correct upgrades. Still fail everytime, maybe I'm too old for that type of hand-eye.

Chrono Cross
Can get the rainbow field but some one always effs it up. I built up the characters to have high defense but they can only take do much of a beating before i just run out of everything

The Tenchu stealth assassin game that ends on a boat. First you fight through this insanely long level with tons of enemies that are very hard to stealth kill only to fight a female ninja with 2 forms, fast and cocaine/meth fueled super fast. In her second form she has unlimited use of all speciality weapons in the game, including health potions. So if you don't continuously press the attack, she gets her health back. It's the most unfair lopsided boss I've run into. There's probably something I am missing in how to beat her, but she's just so annoying.
