Alien Storm for the Sega Genesis is a beat 'em up that is kinda the Frankenstein's monster of Sega arcade games. Take the brawling and look of Golden Axe, the shooting gallery stages of Shinobi, and the theme of Alien Syndrome and you get this wonderful mish mash of a game. Originally a three player arcade game, Sega ported it to the Master System, supporting one player, and Genesis, which supports two players working together to beat back an alien invasion. Play as a muscle man, a spandex-clad gal with a flame thrower, or a xenophobic robot and kick whatever organ grotesque alien monstrosities use to defecate out of god's country and back into the void.

Of all of the games mentioned, Alien Storm most closely recalls Golden Axe with its visual style, character designs, and gameplay. It's mostly a belt-scrolling brawler in that vein, but with futuristic short-range guns instead of blades, which can fire as long as you have energy. That energy can also be used to perform special attacks that fuction like Streets of Rage, where you call in a strike from a support group. Run out, though, and you'll be reduced to swiping away with the butt of your gun. Stages culminate in either a boss fight, a shooter-like running segment, or a first-person cursor shooting gallery. Killing boss/mini-boss monsters and destroying background objects in the gallery sections are where you'll find energy tanks that look like yellow batteries to refill your weapon energy and find first aid kits for your life bar. You also have a dive roll to evade, and pressing the button again will turn it into a jump, allowing you to push back enemies or fire down from above.

The graphics in Alien Storm have a distinctly Sega look from the time, full of the arcade-y flair of Shinobi, Altered Beast, and Golden Axe. The sounds and music have the same sort of flavor, even if the game doesn't get the same sort of recognition as its contemporaries. I personally prefer its amalgamation of styles and theme over the likes of Golden Axe, and feel that it's one of the better beat 'em ups on the Genesis. I've never had the pleasure of playing the arcade game or the Master System version, but if I stumble across a pcb at some point, I intend to get the arcade board.

Played this one, or either of the other versions? Have a nice copy that doesn't look all shitty like mine, which I saved from the trash when someone said it didn't work?

I've never played or wanted to play this game before. It just always looked like a mess to me from the few screen shots and video clips of it I saw. I also never came across the game, so there's that. I don't know...I suppose if the entry cost is low I'll give it a try, but I have pretty low expectations.

The majority of the game feels almost exactly like Golden Axe, so I'd look at that as the measuring stick. I love it myself, for whatever it's worth, but I'm also a sucker for beat 'em ups.
