I don't have much to work with here, other than these facts:

I downloaded it between 1994 and 1997 on a BBS, and it was for the PC (probably DOS, don't think it was Windows). Since I was not into warez, it was almost certainly shareware. It seemed to me to be realistic (so no monsters), but I could be wrong. It wasn't a household name at all, so definitely not Duke Nukem, Quake, or anything that was a big hit. I remember being outside, then going inside into what I remember to be a lab.

Any help on a listing of those type of games released at the time would be greatly appreciated.

If it's not on this list you're probably screwed:

Thanks a lot! That's a huge list! There sure were tons of FPS games in that era. I'll have to look through them all one by one. Anyway, I have a lot more to go through, but so far the closest (and only) possible match appears to be Damage Incorporated (1997). I remember you start out outside, and there is plenty of greenery, and then you go inside (just like this game). I don't see what I remember to be a lab, though. I don't think this is it, but it's a similar setting...

Ha, there's something about that video of Damage Incorporated that really makes me want to play it. :D

I seem to remember, of all things, a fan-made hack of Spear of Destiny that fits that description... at least the "starting outside" part.

I loved the hell out of Damage Incorporated back in the day. I loved the team tactics you could use, your troops could be put into different formations or you could send them off to run wild and kill anything that moves. When Rainbow Six came out, I bought it hoping it would be the same kind of squad tactics kind of thing. It wasn't at all. I never played it more than ten minutes due to my disappointment.

Damage Incorporated is based on a modified Marathon engine, originally by Bungie. That engine's open source now, it's been ported to dang near every modern system. But nobody's bothered porting Damage Incorporated's engine extensions. I would be out of my mind happy if somebody did make it available on new machines.

Did the rest of the game take place inside or was it a mix of in and out? Anything else you can remember? Weapons?

It's very sketchy, I don't think I stopped playing after level one for some reason (even if it sucked [and I'm not saying it did], I still want to find out what it is). I do seem to remember when coming inside into the possible lab, the room being long, but narrow. I also don't remember seeing any enemies in the room.

Whilst neither game meets any of the criteria (1998, not shareware etc) Jurrasic Park Trespasser and Delta Force are stuck in my head and won't move.

Shatner's Tek War? I think there is greenery in there somewhere. Opening is a subway train...
