So, apparently one of my favorite imports got a quiet English release in Korea last fall:
9634
It's a re-imagining of the Famicom/PC Engine CD classic, Downtown Nekketsu Koushin Kyoku: Soreyuke Daiundoukai, a Kunio-kun track meet game I've reviewed at least four times in the opinions on obscure imports thread in its various forms, all of which are great. This expands on the idea quite a bit, letting you create your own characters, schools, customizing events... it's friggin' nuts.
9635
I'm a diehard Kunio guy, and this thing is a damn treasure. On top of that, apparently a successor to River City Ransom called River City Tokyo Rumble just got a physical release on 3DS in the US. Apparently this game got a PSN release as well, but I don't do digital. If you can't tell, I'm pumped up enough about this to sound like an advertisement. Apparently this came out last November in a small print run with no fanfare and already sold out, so it was an ebay buy for me. Cats and dogs sleeping together, robots and monkeys hugging it out... holy shit.
I'm kinda excited that I got it.

Heheh, I so rarely use the online services that I had to check. It's ShinGetterMike.

Where did you get your copy? Is it in English (it would appear so?) Is Korea the only country it was released in? That seems very strange, most English asian only games are Hong Kong, not South Korea.

Mine came off of ebay, but they were sold originally by play-asia.com. The publisher, H2 Interactive, is Korean, but the disk is simply region 3, and everything from the game to the case and manual is in english.

Nice! I may try to find a copy since I won't be disappointed like when I imported the Dungeons & Dragons Collection to have it on disc... and it's in moonrunes.

Yeah, that really surprised me with D&D Collection in PS3. When I bought the physical Strider disc on PS3, it loaded up in english, but D&D remained in Japanese. The asia region Lost in the Rain is all in english, though, which was cool.

Had no idea about the 3DS game until I read about it in this thread. I ended up having to snab it on the e-shop digitally rather than a physical cart due to it being sold out already, plus scalpers asking for more than the digital version.

So, the 3DS River City: Tokyo Rumble has gotten a second print run, if anyone's still looking. Natsume is selling it through their Amazon store, and I'm sure several more will end up on ebay. I was able to get one last night, so hopefully I'll have it around Friday to try out over the weekend. Seems like it's doing well, so maybe they'll do a physical Jidaigeki for the US? Probably a pipe dream, but still...

I forgot about that game, looked solid but right now isn't a good time so hopefully it doesn't get expensive between now and after the holiday.

Seems it's time to dust off the 3DS this weekend.

So, got around to playing Tokyo Rumble today. Holy shit, did I love it. The aesthetic and feel are dead on, the job sidequests are amusing, and there are enough secrets to keep me interested. The bad news is there is only one player story mode, which is shitty, but it is brisk and satisfying enough as a single player game for a Kunio fan. I already finished the base game, which took me about five hours with lots of enjoying dicking around. Some people may complain about the length, but, I mean, who wants to play a 30 hour beat 'em up?
It's loaded with fan service, with tons of references and cameos from both Renegade and Double Dragon. I don't think it's the kind of game that'll make a non-fan interested, but if you're a Kunio fan, it's tremendous. I got super hooked, and will do the New Game + with all of the new job quests. Good stuff... just would've gone bonkers for co-op. That was a big miss.
