Yeah, that's right: Tec Toy opened pre-orders for "new" Mega Drive consoles today. As far as they tell us, the innards are NOT like the original, but an "integrated" (that's how they call it) chip. It's probably a GOAC.

The console follows the original Model 1 design and can be used with cartridges AND an sd card with roms in it. There's no HDMI out, just composite a/v. The best news, however (for me, at least) is that they'll come with the original 3 button controller - and they CAN be bought separately!

The new Mega Drive sells for 399 brazilian bucks. Pre-orders will ship in July.

Details here (http://www.tectoy.com.br/pre-venda-mega-drive-edicao-limitada/p/995040461825) (in portuguese).

Considering every other officially licensed clone (even past Tec-Toy ones) that supports ROMs on an SD card isn't a GOAC clone but a low end ARM based machine with shit emulation..... my interest vanished instantly.

Well it's nice to hear that the Genesis is still being produced in some way, I would argue it's the best console ever made or at least one of the best. I would be fine with composite only as that's what the games were designed to be displayed with.

Yeah, I wasn't exactly thrilled when they announced it. They claim that the components of the old PCB aren't made anymore...is that correct? Anyways, as I said, the best news about this are the controllers. It's getting REALLY hard to find the three button controllers in a good shape for a decent price.

Yeah, it's nice indeed, even with the crappy board. I wouldn't care about the composite video either, had they invested a little more on the console's insides. But it's cool to see that original Model 1 casing being produced again! I wouldn't buy one, but I'd be very happy if someone gave it to me as a Christmas present or something.

I'm sure this would be an issue for NTSC users.

True. The color system is going to be PAL-M.

It's a long shot but at the very least if this and the NES mini draw a lot of attention and sales it might kick sega into releasing an actual good clone

I prefer the Genesis but in this case. Genesis does what Nintendo Won't

I think the most annoying thing is that there are now tons of articles, like with the most recent AtGames announcement, touting this as Sega's "answer" to the NES Mini.

If, for some miraculous reason, Tec Toy's "integrated" chip is a FPGA solution like the RetroUSb AVS, it could be a good console (they do claim that there'll be no emulation involved). But, knowing the company, I highly doubt it.

It's only for Brazil. It's pal. In other words, worthless.

It's pal.

Actually it's PAL-M, which is 525/30 (like NTSC) but with PAL color encoding on an almost nearly NTSC subcarrier frequency of 3.575611 MHz.

Try hooking it up to a NTSC tv and tell us what happens.

A black and white picture, unless of course, you have a converter or can modify it for Y/C or RGB.

The Z80 is still in production and so is the M68000 in the form of the code compatible 68SEC000. The YM2612, VDP, and bus arbiter would have to be cloned.
