1. Super Metroid (SNES)

Easily one of my all time favorites. I don't have much to add that hasn't been said, but it's just awesome.

As an aside, if you feel like playing along at all this year in the challenge thread, Super Metroid would qualify for a point for week 1.

Only took me, like, half a year (and it's not even a particularly long game), but I finally beat Corpse Party, haha. I'm not done with it, though, as there're plenty of wrong ends and name tags that I missed.

Will be trying to beat a game or two or three on the Dreamcast this month.

What with celerystalker's game challenge going on and all, I've actually been finishing some games!

1. Star Wars The Force Unleashed (PS3)
2. Space Invaders Extreme (DS)
3. DuckTales (NES)
4. D (Saturn) - 02.10.17
5. Illusion of Gaia (SNES) - 02.11.17

Realistically this is probably just a phase, as every few months I tend to rotate through mostly reading, mostly gaming, and mostly watching TV shows, each to the exclusion of the others. We'll see. I've always thought I should keep a list like this. I mean how cool would it be to have a dated list going back 20 or 30 years!? I recently started doing that with books I've read on Goodreads, so maybe this is a start for games.

1. Corpse Party (PSP) 1/14
2. Octodad: Dadliest Catch (Vita) 2/19

I started up Octodad with the intention to beat it because I heard it was short, and true to what I heard, I had the credits rolling after putting less than 3 hours into it. Now that makes two Limited Run Games releases that I've played to completion. And Octodad has a reputation as being one of their worst, so if most are better than this, that ain't bad. It wasn't great, but it was decent, with a few laughs here and there.

I really recommend it! I have a list going back to 2004 (though I don't think I kept track for a full year straight until 2006; '04 and '05 are probably missing a bunch), and I love being able to look through it. I could kick myself for not doing it even sooner.

Got real sick with the flu and figured I'd play something to completion

1. Actraiser (SNES)

Really cool game! If you're into side scrolling platformers and city building games it has a little bit of both and in my opinion I was really blown away by the presentation. Definitely looking forward to checking out the sequel.

I decided to pick up and try out a new 2D fighter, as it'd been awhile and I wanted to see what kind of stuff is going on these days. Picked up Under Night In-Birth for PS3. I played one credit on default difficulty without reading the manual with a character named Gordeau. Beat the game, only losing one round on the final boss, no matches lost. Super easy game. Definitely not like getting my ass whipped at Art of Fighting.

I almost forgot; I went out with a buddy the other day, and I decided it was time to finally get a copy of Super Mario Land for Game Boy. For whatever reason, I've never owned it until now, and had only played it once on a demo unit at a Wal-Mart back when it first came out. I decided to try it, and beat it in that first sitting.

The inertia definitely feels a LOT different from the other Mario games of the time, but it was surprisingly short and easy. The game was over just as it was getting going. As easy as it is to get the bonus game at the end of each stage, I had a boatload of lives left over. Still, I think if I'd owned a Game Boy when it was new, I'd have been pretty satisfied with it. Six Golden Coins was definitely an insane upgrade, though.

This version gets ragged on because it's not like the regular Turbo game. I kinda like it more than the chip game. It's slower paced, has a less confusing power up system, and is quite easier. More about moving around and maneuvering through tight spaces in the levels. The music is super corny though. Sounds like the soundtrack to Saved by the Bell.

Finished Limbo on Xbox 360 for the first time today. I really enjoyed its quiet atmosphere and creepy aesthetics. There were some pretty clever puzzles here and there, but nothing too difficult. It was all over pretty quickly, and I didn't feel compelled to track down all of the achievements, but I did enjoy it all the same.

I never played it before but it became a favorite now of mine. It's the best 16 bit platformer I've ever played, that's for sure. My SNES had jail bar problems too but I couldn't stop playing it. So awesome.

Just finished playing through Astro Trooper Vanark on PS1 for the first time, though I've had it since it was new. It's a great little rail shooter in the vein of Star Fox or Panzer Dragoon, though it's super, super short and easy. The between level Resident Evil exploration is just simple filler, and the after credit scene hints at a sequel, but the only unlockable is a stage select. It really feels like they were planning something more massive in scope, but ran out of time and/or budget. Still, it's a great little PS1 B-side.

1. Corpse Party (PSP) 1/14
2. Octodad: Dadliest Catch (Vita) 2/19
3. Thomas Was Alone (Vita) 3/21

With Thomas Was Alone, I've now beaten three releases from Limited Run Games, so phooey at those who believe LRG customers are just collectors and scalpers with no desire to actually open and play LRG's stuff. Like Octodad, this is another LRG game that's treated as a bit of a redheaded stepchild. With Octodad, I get it; the controls are intentionally difficult to work with. With Thomas Was Alone, I don't get the hate, and having beaten the game, I'm all the more convinced that the derision is purely a product of people being biased against the minimalist visual design. But the style works for the story concept, and the narrative is interesting and makes even an assortment of colored rectangles into endearing characters. It also controls well and tests both your mind and reflexes. It's fairly easy, but it throws a decent challenge at you once in a while. I wouldn't say it's a fantastic or anything, but it's definitely a solid, enjoyable game. The only thing in particular I'd complain about is that the quotes at the beginning of each set of stages disappear off the screen stupidly fast, despite that they're pretty critical to piecing together the plot. I felt so rushed in trying to get through them that they couldn't sink in. I ended up having to just look them up online.

KOTOR is still a pretty great game, and the Solomon's Revenge addon is worth it, though I'd recommend playing it on its own, and not as part of a regular playthrough. Together they are just too long. Fortunately, the addon does come with a save to start it out.

While I haven't made a conscious effort to do so, it seems I've been keeping up a pattern of beating one game a month. That's not bad, actually, as that rate would put me at a higher total at the end of the year than what I had for each of the last three years. But who knows, maybe I'll manage another before April is over.

Two games in one month, whoo-hoo! :p I cleared Toki Tanba's route in The Charming Empire, getting both the Happy ending and Normal ending. As much as I enjoy visual novels that are a slow burn and really let you get immersed, it was nice to play through one that moves at a brisk pace. Of course, I still have four more routes to do sometime.

I just did the first Wario Ware game on GBA for the first time. It was dumb. Kinda fun,but dumb through and through. I'd forgotten I that I had this one, as it was in my wife's old DS carrying case. Basically, zero skill micro games that all but universally are exercisrs in timing. It definitely felt more like a mobile game than I'd care to do often.

8. Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds (Vita) 5/22

Apparently I failed to get on anybody's route in Hakuoki, so the last chapter, Chapter 5, stayed on the common route, and I got the normal ending. The trophy for getting that ending is called something like "It could've been worse...", and that about sums it up, haha. It's a pretty depressing ending, but still leaves room for hope. And since the game is split into two releases, it's basically just a cliffhanger. Well, time to start her back up, run through the game picking different choices, and see if I can actually land on somebody's route, and hopefully get a more positive ending.

I beat Lone Survivor with the Blue Ending, which basically explained nothing. The game heavily hints at a few things, but to be left with zero confirmation is pretty annoying. If the developer expects me to replay the game multiple times over to properly piece things together, he's dreaming. The psych report at the end also said I played just a few minutes shy of 4 hours, which also seems crazy to me, unless I really lost THAT much time on dying. Definitely felt a heck of a lot longer than that. I'll probably do a little trophy hunting (but certainly not for all of them, which also requires playing through the game many times over) and then shelve it.

I thought I got locked on to Hiroya's after the first two choices, but judging by the "History" menu that opened up, it looks like, between the common route and Hiroya's, there's a portion where it can branch off to either Hiroya or Libera.

I had a really great time with this game. Found all but 6 or 7 of the shrines without cheating, depending on how you look at it. Maxed out my weapon slots but only a few each for the shield/bow. Bought pretty much everything possible. Part of me wants to complete the picture collections, but it is probably healthier not to. What this game really needed was a Portal gun in the test chambers, er, I mean shrines. The end fight was pretty disappointing, not really requiring any finesse nor any of the techniques typically used to fight Ganon. I put off going to the castle at all for a very long time, and then it really wasn't that big a deal.

The end fight is disappointing, but if you beat the boss after getting all 12 memories you get a better ending. I still need to go back and do that. And you're totally right the shrines did remind me of Portal a lot.

I've beaten this one before on the 360 but I recently got the save battery fixed in my Sega CD so I decided to play through it again. So fun. I used to call it my favorite Sonic game but I think at this point Sonic 3 is my favorite. This game gets weird and some levels are just confusing.

I didn't know about different endings. I did get all 12 memories, so maybe I'll just youtube the 'bad' ending. There was one memory I didn't follow the painter guy hint to right away and didn't find on my own, so I looked it up. Also looked up the castle memory location because I didn't know what would happen if I just started wandering around the castle looking.

I didn't see it coming at all, but apparently I triggered one of the bad endings in Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome. According to the percentage screen that unlocked after that, I've only seen roughly 15% of the game's story, but since the ending got a credits roll, I'm counting that as beating it (but obviously I'm going to keep playing). Then I loaded it up from the beginning and picked the second option on the very first choice, which triggered another silly bad ending. The first one I saw was ending #3, so I'm guessing there's one more bad ending I dodged previously between those.

Definitely fewer than 10 hours. It just kept getting put aside in favor of other games. There's still a ton more I could do, between the trophies and the in-game challenges, but full completion of either requires replaying the game two times on the other difficulties (I always stuck to the default "Just Right" difficulty), which I'm not about to do.

17. Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS) - 11.03 - I hear loud and clear many of the criticisms leveled at this game. Tons of held buttons for missiles/aiming/etc and saveable in a 'no-win' situation. The latter never really happened to me, and the former, well, I just adapted. Less than ideal, sure, but I still had a lot of fun with the game. Good enough that I feel the pull of another play through, but not good enough that it'll actually happen. There's just so many games out there.

It has been years since I played a couple of the Layton games, but I'd swear the central premise in this one was pretty similar to one of those earlier ones. It is funny how you have to pay attention to details and use logic in "court", but if you do that looking at the story/premise/etc, it really doesn't hold up at all. Not even really internally consistent. But that's not why one plays games like this I guess. Still fun.

20. S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl (Complete Mod) (PC) - 12.22 - It is nagging at me that there were a couple of missions that I didn't do. Not regular ones, but ones that I think might have filled in some of the story. But as far as I could tell, when you enter the second to last area it is a point of no return. I thought if I went a little farther I'd be able to then go back, but then the game ended kind of abruptly. It was plenty tricky getting to the end, but I guess I expected something a little more dramatic. Maybe more storyline expounded on over the radio or something. I mean, the character you play has lost his memory, but unless I missed it, you never find out why he did or why he is supposed to "kill Strelock", and those reasons seem pretty critical. Super ambitious game for the time, and the Complete mod made it enjoyable (read: easy enough for a hack like me).

20. Part duex: STALKER SOC beaten for real now 12.28 - I was right that there was significant stuff I missed. There was a whole section that leads to a hologram computer type thing, and that is where the "real" endings are, with explanations for most of what happened. The "realer?" of the two has another significant stretch of quality gaming, so I'm glad I went back for that.
