View Full Version : Does anyone else find that lightgun games make their arms hurt?

... Or am I just really out of shape?

I got a Guncon with Time Crisis yesterday. (Incidentally I tried using the controller as a foot pedal only to find it kept sliding around, so is there a better solution?)

There is one game that gets me sometimes, and that's when I do one player, two guns on Scud for Saturn. It's very long for a gun game, and with two guns I basically sit there for an hour with both arms extended out, which is a bit tiring.

I exercise, but not often. Maybe I am out of shape...

It's not that. Gun games are by their nature designed as short-burst arcade play, not sit down until your eyes glaze over on a 5 hour RPG binge. Cap that off with most games having only a tiny bit of downtime for cinemas and you're left holding your arm out straight for an extended period of time.

Gun weight is a big deal. I have a couple blowback recoil guns that feel like I'm holding a gallon of milk compared to something like the SMS light phaser. I found that sitting down (or on my ass in the floor) and propping my elbow on my knee helps arm fatiuge.

For the foot pedal thing maybe try a cheap arcade stick. Every single button acts a dodge button, and even the cheapest of the cheap have rubber pads to keep from sliding. Or, leave your foot/toes on the face buttons at all time and just press down when needed.

EDIT: I have several 3rd party guns that run in Guncon 1/2 and Stunner/Justifier mode. They have a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom for a footpedal. You can buy a cheap 6 foot extension cable and use a Rock Band or Guitar Hero bass drum pedal and most of them are built like a rock.

There's an arcade game I can't remember the name of but you not only have to hold up a lightgun all the time, you also have to duck behind cover since it tracks your movements. I tried that once and was sore for a couple days afterwards, reinforcing my belief that I'm turning into a fat tub of lard.

Yep, a Konami game that got a PS2 release in Japan and Europe. I forget the JP name but AKAIK the PAL version is called Police 911 or something. It uses a PS1 Justifier gun and is compatibile with specific digital cameras to do the same thing on the home version.

Fatigue is one of the main reasons I can deal with using on screen recticules with the PS3 Move and Wii shooters. You can play for extended sessions due to having them laying flat in your lap just like a regular control pad.

Wait.... can you describe these 3rd party guns? This is the first I've heard of an all-in-one solution for playing both Guncon 1 and 2 games without needing the actual guns.

This one is called the Shooter by Yobo. Orange one is the original, black one is one I painted. They still sell them new on eBay, but no sellers ever refer to them by their proper name. If you do a search for Guncon 2's it will certainly pop up. This one works on a PS1/PS2 as a Guncon/Guncon 2/Justifier and has the jack on the bottom to hook up a foot pedal.

Here's some info on them from a previous thread
