2018 Yearly Finds

I saw the discussion of Goodwills and Salvation Army stores in the last page. I can't speak for what it's like lately outside my little part of Pennsylvania, we all know 2003-2006 or so was a golden time in yard sales (and I had a good finds in both stores then) but I'll keep the subject in mind for future replies.

I could go on a bit more for the Salvation Army when it first opened in the new location. Before it opened it needed to be full of merchandise for sale on opening day, but because it wasn't open yet it couldn't accept donations. To fill the store they got the merchandise from another location further north, specifically it was extra donations that were stored in that location's basement for many years. As everything was donated many years earlier, it was better stuff. The first few days after it opened were really good, I found a really good game on opening day which I'm quite happy with.


Steve W, how often do we find imports in the wild?
I used to come across import stuff pretty regularly years back, there's a large Asian population around my area(being near Toronto) and being a heavily populated region in general also helped quite a bit. Platforms include Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Master System, Gameboy, Game Gear, PC Engine, Playstation, Dreamcast, etc. Even UK releases, not just Asian imports. I found plenty years back, including Virtual Boy as Japanese games were sold locally in Electronics Boutique back when the system was being cleared out. It's mostly died off though as finding anything game related is becoming difficult, but it still occasionally happens.


I also managed to find some games recently so I thought I'd take pictures. First from the local Salvation Army on the 23rd, they're complete and were priced $3.99 each but I was able to use a $10 off coupon so it cost $13.94 total. I don't find games worth buying here too often so it was a nice surprise.

And here's some stuff I found earlier from Value Village on the 21st. It's really rare to find any game stuff this old there, I'm especially happy with the hint book and that puzzle. I don't know if I have the hint book already or not, I know I have the game boxed with instructions but can't remember about the guide. For those who can't tell from the picture what that puzzle is, it's the Nintendo Challenge Dice originally from 1969. Really surprised to find it, but sadly the case is cracked and two of the pins are missing the coloured discs so it's not perfect. Interestingly, the instructions with it are in English and call it the Challenge Dice, this was mostly known as the Chaotic Cube outside Japan so it appears to be a rarer release(or at least the instructions are). I really wish the original box was included as it could be different from what's currently known to exist.

I'd never even heard of such a thing, but now I'm pretty impressed that you found one and that the only things wrong with it are that two color stickers fell off and the plastic case got brittle and cracked during its nearly 50 years of existence. People generally don't treat things like that very well, let alone hang on to them for half a century instead of just chucking them in the trash. I'm totally jealous right now. Are there modern reproductions of those things? I really want to play with one now.

Is anyone on here in the Columbus, Ohio area? I saw this on Craigslist; a very yellow SNES, a Genesis and PS2 all in unknown working order + a bunch of PS2 games for $30 but I'm not gonna go 250 miles just to pick it up:

Whensoever I look on CL in my area lately (though I expect it to change) I see mostly nothing but the same old stuff at eBay pricing (and, occasionally, ridiculously higher) that just sits, sits, sits, sits, sits, sits and sits. If I just buy a SNES or some lot like the $30 lot I'll be pleased with it.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with finding it too. I'm not sure if there's a modern release of the puzzle, I do believe Nintendo re-released their Ten Billion Barrel puzzle somewhat recently as a Club Nintendo item. I'd just like to point out that the coloured pieces aren't stickers, they seem to be metal discs glued to the pins. Honestly I think it was dropped at some point which cracked the case and knocked the discs loose from the glue that held them. It might have just happened in the thrift store but I couldn't find the pieces anywhere and I did search for them as best I could.


Also I decided to check out the Salvation Army again earlier today just to see if anything new turned up, no worthwhile games but I did end up getting some DVDs. The Rurouni Kenshin Premium Box sets 1-3 being the most notable. I remember watching the OVAs and a few episodes years ago so I felt picking up the sets were worthwhile. I should mention, the packaging for these sets are incredibly cheap and the discs are in stiff sleeves which tend to scratch the discs, I just wish it was better quality. Everything pictured cost me $30.95 total after using a couple coupons. I also remember watching that Myths and Logic documentary ages ago and liking it, so now I have a legit DVD of it.

Goodwill's still only at 1% in "Interesting" and Salvation Army's not much better around here lately. I went to a St. Vincent De Paul (another thrift store) in Kittanning and found nothing there the other week but I was not early. I know I only recently got back into looking for games but so far it's been pretty sparse. I know I might have been spoiled with finds from 2003 - 2006 and even back then I often didn't find anything for some time. I'm still glad I got anything.

Missed 2 DS Systems and a variety of games yesterday from that yard sale for $50. I probably would have picked those up.

NES with Grey Zapper, 2 Controllers and 8 (give or take) Games - Wasn't in a yard sale, I wasn't even going to that town at first; someone saw the station wagon then saw speakers Father had picked up in the back and eventually we got to talking, I drove over to his house and after some talking about speakers and guitars I mentioned I was looking for old video games (or computers) and he showed me this NES. I'm not sure if I'm going to get it or not, it did have some somewhat decent (for resale) titles with it like Mario Bros. Arcade and SMB 2.

25 cents each. Bought from the same place that had the Atari 600XL and TI99/4A I got last year. At least now I know the TI99/4A turns on.

This isn't a great way to spend gas money though, I'm not the one paying for this fuel but in the classic Mercury (18 MPG) it cost about 10 gallons of gas. I'm in for the fun of it all.

Sunday: Went to a flea market that was sparsely populated with vendors (unlike how it was a few years back.) Saw an Atari 7800 for $60, a bunch of 2600 and 7800 games at various prices. There was a copy of H.E.R.O. at his table for $25 with a faded label, I passed even though I was looking for a copy. Why did I get up so late?

Ran across Pac-Man for Neo Geo Pocket Color today and decided to pick it up because I never see anything for NGPC anywhere ever and my collection for it is so small. But man, that game is hard to play without the control stick rings.

I really wanted to like the Neo•Geo Pocket Color, I really did. I was never a Nintendo fan, so I was excited there was competition in the handheld market from a company with a good pedigree. But I never found anything I could tolerate playing on that annoying controller nub. The games never sparked my interest enough to tolerate the bad controls (much like the N64). But as bad as the control pad is on the NGPC, it doesn't hold a candle to the awfulness of the Tapwave Zodiac's analog controller. I dare you to make it through Duke Nukem 3D on the Zodiac. It's practically impossible with the crappy controls. I want to turn slightly to shoot a bad guy... no, I've turned around 180 degrees and I'm getting shot in the back, and looks like I'm dead. Again. So pointless.

Also, I now know that Pac-Man on the Neo•Geo Pocket Color came with control stick rings. I bought my copy of the game in one of those 4-and-6 packs that the company that bought SNK slapped together to get rid of old stock, so I never had the chance to play it properly. Damn.

I actually like the control stick, it's just horrible for pacman without those rings. I haven't played the NGPC in a while, but there was a time that I was really into Card Fighters Clash. And there's not really any truly bad games for the system, so long as your into the genera of game.

The wife, three of the kids and I went to "Maxwell Street Day" in Cedarburg, WI. It's actually a big flea market on the Ozaukee County fair grounds (I think that's the name). I'm hobbling about due to a sprain in my back that's pinching a nerve in my leg, but I managed to get about. The place is mainly people selling a variety of antiques and collectables at market prices with some deals here and there.

I purchased a complete copy of Animal Crossing: Wild World for $15 at a game store's tent. It's probably the going rate on the 'Bay but my kids will enjoy it. I coukd have had a newer XBox 360 with Kinect for $57 but it didn't have a hard drive. The kid who was selling it pushed hard, stating he'd get the drive and bring it to his mom's store but I passed. Also passed a somewhat loved Yoshi plush that the seller cherrfully said was $10.

TBH I'm not sure if I'm feeling good about purchasing this. I felt conflicted when I first saw it, after buying it I felt OK but lest I say something I'm not sure I'll f̶e̶l̶l̶ feel that splendid.

I didn't get a whole lot in the last few days but it's interesting seeing something at all show up. As for Centipede, it's from the same people who had a copy of Yars' Revenge I saw a few years ago. They have more Atari games, a 2600 and a Commodore 64 buried in the house somewhere so I'll keep coming back to their yard sale on occasion.

I went to a small store that had a bunch of game items in it. All of it seemed to be at market pricing. Genesis II - $45, N64 - $55, Myst on Saturn - $9... There were a bunch of guys there having a D&D tournament or something like that, talking loudly. No judging, no offense but now (reflecting only on myself here) I think I see why I left gaming (for the most part) for years.

Local St. Vincent store started selling games again but closer to market on some titles. Picked up "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and the newer bresker-style Original Xbox power cord for $11 total. Today I had a chance to check out a store in the city I work in and got a blue Microsoft-brand Xbox controller for $1.50. It looks like it was hardly used.

Arrived at a Flea Market around 7:40, people were still pulling in to their spaces. Passed on a 360. One seller pulled 3 SNES games out of a Christmas box of all things as I walked by, I didn't realize he was the seller at first. I came by, he had a Genesis controller and something else game related I didn't need. I picked everything up, he said $8. I put the controller and other item down and got these for $5:

Championship Pool (Fair condition)
Super Mario All-Stars (Average - Good condition)
Super Mario World (Player's Choice edition; Good condition)

I saw a wireless Atari controller but wasn't sure if it was to a Flashback or not. In retrospect, I don't think it was an original; it had no antenna. The lady wanted $3 for it, I didn't ask further.

Passed on 8 - 10 common Atari 2600 games for what seemed to be $75 (it wasn't well marked.)

Saw a Genesis (2) for $50, passed...

Went inside the building on the Flea Market grounds and there's a dedicated reseller in there. NES systems, SNES systems, some Genesis and Playstation and Atari systems including 2 that don't turn on for $10 ea. In there I saw an Atari 5200 4 Port without any controllers, games or wires; it's not in the best condition but I've seen worse and I wanted to see if I could buff out some light scratches. I paid $19 ($1 off since I asked,) probably not the greatest price but I wanted to modify a 4 port like this and I don't really care if I need to repair a couple things in it first. I rarely saw 5200 stuff in the wild anyway.

Stop at Cash In Culture in Monroeville Mall - picked up Super Breakout (5200) for $3. I had no 5200 games for when I test this 5200.

Last stop: The Exchange in Monroeville. Picked up Dreamcast Magazine Disc from July, 2000; Vol. 6. Includes Dreamcast Web Browser 2.0 and some game demos. Paid $3.

Total: $30. I'm glad to finally have a 5200 at all. I also found I actually have the TV connector for the Ti99/4a find from last year. All in all, I'm not going to say it's the same as the 71 game haul for $17-$18 in 2004 but I'm happy to find things I wanted.

My wife came back from a yard sale this weekend with 2 boxes of video game cables and controllers for a combined total of $5. Took a while to get everything untangled but there was a couple PS2 and XBox controllers, various video cables, several headphone/microphone headsets, PS2 controller extension cables, GBA link cable, various power supplies and cables, an N64 Voice Recognition Unit with microphone, a Guncon 2 with the T cable, and probably other cabley stuff that I can't remember at the moment. It was 2 copy paper boxes packed full of stuff. Once I got everything untangled and organized, I was able to fit it all nicely into one box, but still a lot of stuff for $5.

The funny thing is that I just bought a Guncon 2(without the T-cable) off eBay recently after looking a good long while for one and not finding one anywhere at a decent price.

So I guess I am not the only one in my area that noticed the dry spell. I wonder if it had something to do with the firest fire smoke that kept blowing in for 3 months straight.
well its gone from 90 degrees and smoky to about 60 and raining (much prefer rain any way) and I noticed that goodwill, salvation army and other thrifts are FLOODED with donations so if any thing most people said eff it and donated it all this year.

so I expect to find something game related soon, and if not its money saved for PRGE.

I don't suppose I'm being the cheapskate I was in 2006. Yeah, though; the market changed. I may or may not buy a Vic-20 from the same fellow who had the Atari 400.

I made quite the interesting find today. Or rather, my fiance did, because I probably would've walked right past it if my fiance hadn't begrudgingly pointed it out, haha. (Begrudgingly because he's not eager for even more piles of game junk being brought into our home, haha.) Someone had put out bags for recycle, and they were loaded with 80s game stuff. It's gonna take some time before I make sense of it all, but there's a Colecovision, Intellivision II, Atari 7800 (and its box), 60-some carts for the three, a whole bunch of manuals and inlays, an Intellivoice, among other stuff. There's a big tangled mass of cables and controllers, so I don't yet know if any of the systems are complete with all the hookups and such. Strangely, among everything, I spotted an NES RF switch and manuals for Zelda and Blades of Steel. I'd love to know what happened to this person's NES stuff, but I certainly can't complain about what all I did find. I just hope I didn't leave anything behind since there were other bags, and the game stuff was mixed up with old toys and holiday decorations and such. But I think I was about as thorough as I could be digging through someone's trash on the sidewalk, haha.

I'll definitely need to clean this stuff up, since everything feels kind of dusty and grimy (seems like somebody was clearing out an attic or something), so maybe I'll get a photo and a list later on. But if everything is in working order, it's a nice find for me in particular, as I have very little in the way of Atari stuff and pre-crash games. The only system I already have is a Colecovision. I welcome more games for that, and now I'll possibly be able to play the Intellivision carts I already had, since I had some games but no system. And as someone with no Atari systems until now, a 7800 is perfect. Now I should be able to play both 2600 and 7800 games.

Oh, I definitely was, haha. In fact, part of the reason I took the stuff this time is because I regret passing on a bunch of DS cases that someone was once trashing just because I was too embarrassed to take them. They were in mint condition, and I could've bought loose copies of the games to piece together complete copies. Also, as silly as it sounds, while I was digging through the stuff, I was thinking that forcing myself to do something that embarrasses me would be helpful in combating my social anxieties. Though it helps that I'm in NYC, where people put anything and everything out on the curb and it's not uncommon for people to grab stuff that interests them, and since there aren't tons of thrift stores to donate to (nor are they necessarily easy to bring stuff to, with so many people who don't drive here), there's lots of perfectly good stuff that gets put out as trash. In the past, we've brought home various things like CRTs, guitars, other audio equipment, etc. It's less embarrassing to take one single large thing than digging through bags, though, haha. We've also put out a lot of our own stuff that gets taken in no time flat. The other day we put out a broken iMac, and it was gone within a couple hours.

Personally I don't rip open bags but if I see something put out in the garbage that's interesting(and in decent shape) I'll try to take it just to preserve it. Some stuff I just donate to thrifts or give away, other stuff has some value so I'll try to sell or trade it, and some stuff I end up keeping for myself(like odd VHS tapes). I remember finding a couple N64 games thrown out at one point, decent stuff too like Ocarina of Time and Donkey Kong 64 if my memory isn't playing tricks on me. Also the box and inserts for an NES console set at a different time and location. It's been very rare to find any video game stuff thrown out which is why I can remember some specific things. I can't remember everything I've found thrown out though, only some specific stuff comes to mind. It's also rare for me to find anything worth taking at all, I'm thinking back over the last 10-15 years or so.

Unrelated I've found a few things since the last time I posted here, but I've been a bit lazy with posting and the details like when and for how much are getting fuzzy. I'll see if I get around to posting about those finds.

For what it's worth, I carefully undid the knots in the bags and tied them back up before I left, no ripping involved. :p

I've been slowly going through what I found. I figure the best way to tackle it is one system at a time. So I cleaned and tested all of the Atari stuff first. Here's a pic of that stuff:

To list it out in text, there's an Atari 7800 with two controllers, its ancient video switch (I'm using my own RCA to coax cable to hook it up, though), its plug, and its box and paperwork. I found the following games for it:

Gotta give Aussie find of the year!

I was able to pick up a Wii U 8 GB unit with bar, HDMi cable and control pad for about $40. Owner wasn't sure if it workex: his boys took it apart to find the problem but determined it was a bad power supply. I had it tested and both control pad and system work!

Now I just have to find screws for the system. The boys lost all but one.

The 7800's got some pretty great arcade port not found anywhere else, but you'll want to forget about those Proline controllers and source something else. DanthWader at Atari Age was selling some neat Black NES style controllers until he decided to upscale his production, which appears to be taking a while, but that'd be the way to go when he finally sells them again.

Those look nice. Though I won't be playing any 7800 games until I can figure out and resolve why this 7800 can play 2600 games perfectly but not the 7800 games. But, yeah, I can't say I'm a fan of the 7800 controllers. I tried using a Genesis controller to play the 2600 games and that felt pretty good. But I know Genesis controllers are only really viable for games that just use a single button.

This find has really sent me down a rabbit hole of hardware issues. I figured I'd get the Colecovision games cleaned while I'm in the process of figuring out the 7800, since I could just test them on my own Colecovision first, without dealing with cleaning up the Colecovision I found just yet. But I quickly discovered that my own Colecovision isn't working right anymore either. Granted, it had probably been years since the last time I used it. No matter the game and even if there's no game in it at all, I'm getting scrambled graphics and incorrect letters for text. From what I've read, that's usually an issue with the power supply or the power switch. So I first thought of cleaning the power supply I found and trying that, but when I picked the thing up, it started dripping what I assume is rusty water straight out of the inside of the wall wart. x_x So deeming that a total lost cause, I sadly trashed it. But I tested my own power supply with a voltmeter, and everything appears hunky-dory. So now I got my Colecovision opened up, and I tried getting at the power switch with compressed air, isopropyl alcohol, and contact cleaner. No dice so far, so I guess the next step is to remove it from the board.

Anyway, that's a buzzkill, but to get back on track with my find, here are the Colecovision games:

Blaster Master and Tokyo Highway Battle came from a store in Salem Oregon that I always stop at when I go to PRGE. I heard the PSX Blaster Master was pretty good and I really like the OG Tokyo Xtreme Racer series on PS2, I didn't know there was a PSX version so I had to get it.
I want to toss some business their way they've been around a while and have a lot of cool stuff plus it gives me a reason to go up a see my parents

Thanks for the info! I never even considered that Spy Hunter might have two different sets of overlays. That said, I did find two standard Colecovision controllers and two Super Action Controllers, so it makes sense why the original owner would hold on to both sets of overlays.

I didn't end up buying this but saw it earlier today. It seems to be unicycle branded with Ubisoft and Rocket Robot on Wheels, I'm guessing some type of promotional item or contest prize. It's an N64 game for those wondering. I have no idea about the value and couldn't find anything online about something like this which is why I passed on it.

Kind of wish someone would have had more info on this but I'm not exactly surprised with the lack of replies. It wasn't at a Goodwill, it was actually at an independent thrift near me that rarely has anything I'm interested in besides the odd VHS tape. My personal limit would have been $20 but it was a bit higher than that. I haven't been back yet to see if it sold or not.

i picked up a few games from gamestop over black friday...nba live 19 and detroit become human both 19.99 each...and uncharted lost legacy for 9.99. live 19 was for xbox one. also got a few games from pawn shop for $8 each...yakuma kiwami on ps4, nba live 18 and madden 18. yakuma is on ps4 and madden and nba on xbox one....everything complete....also about a month ago bought themega retron hd from hyperkin shipped for $45

I saw a bunch of NES and Atari 2600 commons at an estate sale resale shop in a mall at various prices. I didn't want them. I also recently had a dream of seeing a few common NES and SNES games at ridiculous prices ($10 each) in a local Goodwill.

Really, some of my interest's gone to my 1950s Hoover 62 Vacuum. Maybe I'll find brushes for it which are obsolete and difficult to find but don't command much money on eBay. I missed 3 pairs of them recently.

Found 4 GBA games for $1 at a small thrift store. 3 out of 4 don't have labels and one, missing its label, had permanent marker on the front:

There was an Xbox without cables or controllers I passed on (having one already.)

I also found other items in the same store; 12 VHS tapes of MST3k, a few pencil sharpeners (one shaped like an early 20th century train) and RCA cables.

I had kicked myself for trading in my Vita for a New 3DS. While I enjoy my 3DS as this version fits my hands better, I liked the ability to cross buy games for PS3 and Vita. Add to that I found I liked playing Minecraft alone as little builders seem to think they know what I'm building. I turn my virtual back and then suddenly a giant tower appears like it's the Black Fortress, adorned with torches on each side lighting the night.

One day I was puttering on eBay and someone was selling the OLED model, like I had, with Hot Shots Golf, 4 GB of storage case, power supply but with a bad battery for $69. I won it at that price. Other than the battery, the system runs great. I've got a replacement battery on order.

My local Goodwill had an influx of games for PS2, PS3 and Xbox. A few Xbox titles made me debate but they were games for "more mature" folks that I'd never get to play. My brood tends to sniff out where video games are being played in the house like digital bloodhounds.
