The move will contain computer animated characters and live action humans. It has been delayed for years. It has been through two different movie studios. It's direction changed from story-focused to action-focused. I'm glad we finally have a year + month + day this time, but for crying out loud, the movie was originally announced in 2016!

The (supposed) launch day will be November 15, 2019.

That feeling you get when you'd only watch it if the title character was voiced by Jaleel White and the movie involves the planet already wrecked and in full grimdark industrial mode. I'm going to go try to unbury my VHS of Surf Ninjas. It'll be just as awful, but in a way that makes it freakin' awesome.

So we have a live action/CGI Sonic movie with a bunch of (mostly) no-names on board versus a Mario movie made by one of the premiere 3D animation companies and co-produced by Miyamoto? Wonder which will be better received.

The more I read about the Sonic 2019 movie, the more I stand by my words: "It is like watching a train wreck in slow motion." It's no wonder Paramount isn't showing the short trailers online where the wider world can see them and instead is only showing them at little film festivals and events.

This is definitely one of those movies where I'll be seeing it for myself then warning the rest of the world about it.

The character models are so bad its not even funny. Well actually it is pretty funny. My friends first reaction was that he looked like a Care Bear

The trailer out now and i wonder how sega even approved for this design of sonic O_o Then again,i assume sega probably doesn't care and just see this as a crash grab nothing more. This i can definitely see ending up as being hilariously bad.

Why just why? This looks like it should have been released like 15 years ago. Weird. I see this bombing hard, doubt kids these days even know who Sonic is lol.

Is the plot going to be about Sonic trying to stop Dr Robotniks quest to prevent the world from getting vaccinations?

I think given how successful every Sonic game ever made has been, regardless of its quality, the movie will go over just as well

Yeah it looks God awful but so do a lot of movies that perform well at the box office

336k downvotes to 212k upvotes. Not looking too good. I think most gamers hate it but what about 40 year old moms with 2 or 3 kids? Will they care that Sonic looks like a grotesque furry freak, that Jim Carrey looks and sounds nothing like Robotnik, or that the jokes fall flat? Probably not

"Terrible! Waluigi hates this!"

By the way, the director says on Twitter that they are going to redesign some parts of Sonic's movie appearance due to fans' reactions online.

...

Dude, the weird, ugly-looking Sonic might be a problem, but it is one of the least problems of this movie!

They might make changes, they might (but probably won't) fix everything that looks off or wrong about Sonic's appearance, but they won't fix the core character and story problems here. It's too late for any foundational changes like those. The writing is on the wall. There's more writing on the wall with each new fact revealed about the movie, whenever one-by-one they fall. You can have a million Easter eggs about old Sonic games and cartoons hidden in your movie, but they won't actually make the movie into a GOOD movie.

This trailer has convinced me that though I will inevitably watch this movie as I am a Sonic The Hedgehog fan, I might just skip on watching it at an actual movie theater and wait until I can rent it for $3.

Like I've written before: The Sonic movie is a train wreck in slow motion.

It just amazes me that what we saw could have made it past test audiences, heads of studio, multiple designers, the wives/partners of the directors/executive producers, the financial backers, and nobody started laughing hysterically or said "are you f**king kidding me?"

I was wondering the exact same thing. It makes me wonder if it's all just a publicity stunt to get people talking about the movie. Like maybe they knew no matter what Sonic looked like that people would hate it so they rendered just a minute of awfulness animation so whatever they're actually using would look awesome by comparison.

But knowing Hollywood, they probably just figured they could throw whatever up on screen and people would flock to the theater.

I predict that the redesign is still going to look off. Judging by everything else wrong with the trailer, I cant see them having the competence to do it right

It's like they watched the original Super Mario Bros movie from 1993 and thought they could do the same with Sonic. Strangely I could see Bob Hoskins making a better Robotnik than Jim Carrey, of course he's dead now so he can't.

If I had to make any predictions I would guess that we'll learn in this movie that Sonic's full name is actually Sonic Sonic.

He may have outgrown it, since now he's into Fortnite, but my 9-year-old nephew was crazy about Sonic. The Sonic IP is still pretty active even in recent years, like with the Sonic Boom cartoon that ran from 2014 to 2017, so kids these days are familiar with Sonic.

Edit: And on that note, I'm moving this topic to Modern Gaming. It's okay to discuss game-related media (movies, comics, whatever) in the Classic and Modern Gaming sections.

Sonic Boom started in 2014? I thought this was a current show, I didn't know it already finished a few years ago. I guess I haven't been keeping up with what's new on TV lately.

There's another thread on the Sonic movie already, shouldn't they be combined?

The Sonic The Hedgehog CGI movie has been delayed to 2020 now - Valentine's Day 2020 - to make time to rework and re-implement the new 3D Sonic. I guess that it is good that they are "fixing" its appearance, but seriously movie-guys, you should have just let the movie drop in November as it is going to be a lame movie regardless of how Sonic looks. Changing the appearances of the emoji in the Emoji movie would not have changed that movie from a stinker to a cinematic masterwork.

Nothing says "I love you" like subjecting your partner to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie on Valentine's Day.

I just saw trailer #2. its an improvement but still... just looks off in my opinion. it seems like they cant get the eyes right. the humor isnt something im used to and doesnt seem like the Sonic from the late 90s and early 2000s that im accustomed to but hey its aimed at kids, not people like me in their 30s who worshipped the games as a child and thought he was always a "cooler" alternative to Mario.

Jim Carrey is great in this natural comedic role. I really wish he would get back to doing more physical and goofball comedy

I saw the new trailer and I was giggling throughout. I see it as a "Howard the Duck" approach: how would an anthropomorphic sentient blue hedgehog look? I never saw the original trailer but what they have works for me.

And yes I'd subject my wife to it. I took her to see "Downton Abbey" on date and I'm not a big fan of it....

Sonic definitely looks more like he should, but the movie itself still looks bad to me. It's kinda disappointing in a way. If they stuck with the original design, the movie could've been spectacularly bad, but now I suspect it's just gonna be blandly bad.
