Hey folks,
I recently got a PS2 (Fat model), and an ethernet adapter for it. I have not yet attached the adapter. I notice it goes on the slot where a hard drive would sit. Here are my questions:

Do I need a special disk to make use of the adapter?
Do I need a hard drive? Or does it just have those connections since it replaces the existing cover?

What can I do with the ethernet adapter?

I used to use my Ethernet adapter to play Midnight Club 3 online and ATV Off-road Fury 2. I never had to use a Hard Drive. I had a fat model. I don't know if there's still people online gaming on the PS2.

I believe the online servers got shut down years ago. The best thing you can do with the adapter is to use it in conjunction with the Free McBoot softmod and Open PS2 Loader to play games off a hard disk.

I have OPL on my HDD and play games off it. You can stream games well from your PC to it same as the Slim PS2. You can also transfer games via FTP to the HDD although it's a bit complicated.
