View Full Version : Should I get Minecraft on Switch?

So, I've already got Dragon Quest Builders 2, which is a lot like Minecraft, but.... [and yeah I'm not sure if this should just go in the DQ topic, I'll let Aussie decide, but hopefully we'll discuss Minecraft more]

Thing is, at times I get frustrated with the "story" aspect of DQB2, like I just wanna build but the game keeps asking me to do all this other stuff and some abilities and conveniences don't exist until you reach X part of the storyline. At the same time though, sometimes I just ignore that stuff and build whatever I want anyway and when I do, I don't really feel all that constrained.

So like, I wonder... should I get Minecraft on the Switch, or does it have its own frustrations I should be warned about?

I'm asking because I thought I saw some anti-Minecraft people here and I kinda wanna know what their beef is.

I dont have a beef with Minecraft I just didnt know what I was supposed to do. I wasnt a fan of the graphics. Maybe I could try it again at some point, I just didnt "get it". That was the 360 version

My main beef with Minecraft is that it makes me motion sick. But beyond that, I find it boring and aimless. The reason I like Dragon Quest Builders but not Minecraft is besides DQB having way more personality with the art style, setting, characters, etc., it also has a sense of direction. But if you want free-form building, Minecraft probably will better serve you.

Being a PC game, you can add mods and have unlimited amount of textures, sure, but man does the game look like ass. If you finish Dragon Quest Builders though you have a pretty massive amount of different items and textured blocks that you can build. Dragon Quest Builders 2 allows you to add steps, allows you to add slanted blocks. It's not just squares.

I mostly don't like the aimless activities of many of these builder games which is why I like DQB, but, if I was to play something aimless though, I'd play something like 7 Days to Die. The setting, the idea behind it, etc. I have played the game but I didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought I would so I ended up selling it. I did crap all over it because of not only the aimless feel of it but it is actually one of those games where you really got to know what you're doing, what you should be using your time doing, what items do what etc, so honestly it requires a bit more of an extensive play time to actually get into and it was something that's not my playstyle. However, while I don't care for let's plays and everything, when watching others who do actually know what they're doing, this game does look like it could be good which is why I bought into it in the first place, I just didn't have the time to invest.

You can quote portions of people's posts if you don't find the whole thing relevant to what you're saying, but I would ask that you refrain from editing quotes in such a manner that it changes what the person said and puts words in their mouth.

I think she is referring to the fact that you made it look like she said her main problem with the game is that its boring and aimless.

Bingo. The quote could've just been started at "I find it boring and aimless" if one doesn't want to include the part about motion sickness. Combining two sentences in such a way changes the meaning. This is a relatively harmless example, but this kind of editing could be used in more problematic ways, so that's why I ask users to refrain from such habits.

What if you change the camera view settings and disable the bobbing movement when moving? Or are these settings not present in the variant of Minecraft you are playing? Do other first-person games have this motion-sickness effect on you?

Edmond, you should get Minecraft. It is a lot of fun when you approach it the right way. You can either play Survival Mode or Creative Mode.

In Survival Mode, enemies will exist in dark locations and they will try to attack you. This Mode is good for when you want to make your own adventures or goals while playing. As long as you have the required crafting materials, you can build whatever you want. The game even includes Achievements and a "recipe" guide book now. However, I'd still recommend that you use a Minecraft wiki while playing to reference crafting recipes whenever you want to build something until you memorize things.

In Creative Mode, there are no enemies and you have unlimited blocks to build whatever you want. You are invincible and can even fly around the skies!

The Nintendo variants of Minecraft also include Super-Mario-themed content.

The PC variants, especially Java Edition (the original game), allow for the use of a lot of cool modifications that can add, enable, or disable certain content or other things. If you go this route, then you should try the Technic launcher which makes it simple to add and launch mods with Minecraft.

You might also want to play Minecraft: Story Mode Seasons 1 and 2. They can be difficult to find or play these days what with the bankruptcy of Telltale Games. If you want, then you can watch videos of playthroughs on YouTube or Twitch. However while the Minecraft: Story Mode seasons don't play like MC, they can help to establish the world and lore of Minecraft - or at least give you an idea of some of the things that can be found out there in Minecraft's world.

You can also play Minecraft online with other people. This can be accomplished either by running your own server or paying for Microsoft's private servers which are called Minecraft Realms.

Some variations of Minecraft even include mini-games!

I like to listen to podcasts while playing Minecraft with the game's music disabled and the sound effects dialed to quiet. That way I can enjoy playing Minecraft while keeping the rest of my brain entertained with talk programs (usually talking about retro games). You might be amazed by all of the things I've built in Minecraft over the years while listening to podcasts!

Yeah, first-person games in general are a problem for me. I can play stuff like dungeon crawlers okay, since the rigid, grid-based movement keeps me from feeling sick, but I largely avoid first-person games with free-form movement. Before I ever put any serious time into Minecraft, my husband spent a good amount of time adjusting the settings, turning off the bobbing and adjusting the view, since he gets motion sick from first-person games too and knows how best to set them up to minimize that. But it still got to me so bad after a couple hours of playing that I then spent basically the whole weekend lying in bed. My husband tends to power through his motion sickness, and through repeat exposure to a game, it becomes less of a problem for him. But I don't have the patience for that, to make myself feel sick over and over just for the sake of playing a game. I've got hundreds of other games I can play that won't make me feel sick.

Apparently the switch version of Story Mode got a physical release, so you can still get it.

That said, until recently I was confused as to what Story Mode even *was* (I went and asked on a reddit and they set me straight). The title is just bad as calling it "Mode" makes it seem like an expansion to the main game, not a separate product. That said, Minecraft always seemed to me like basically.... my mind keeps wanting to compare it to Simcity, in the sense that while there is some gameplay (its possible to tick off your citizens) you're mostly just screwing around and doing things you wanna do. Building blocks. Likewise with Minecraft yeah you can die or be killed but its mostly just "build stuff."

I don't see what the point of a Story Mode game would be really, because nothing suggests Minecraft has a deep lore... it would be like having a storyline for Simcity. In that sense, Dragon Quest Builders almost works better for that purpose since the storyline involves you directly using (and in a lot of cases learning how to use) the toys you're given, and its attached to a franchise that already had lore to mine and craft from before it became a minecraft-type game (hell the two DQB games are direct sequels to the first two DQ games).

And yeah I take one look at Minecraft's world of block people and think "yeah there's no way this has an actual story."

I read an article on Rock Paper Shotgun that was about the author's recent play of Minecraft. It reminded me of how my kids play Minecraft split-screen style (when I let them-they tend to get angry at one another with lots of yelling and whining): virtual action figures. They would move about, build and interact with each other like they would with physical dolls. The only difference was that their play world interacted back and was much larger than the confines of a living room.

In the author's case, she was playing it like a role playing game. She had her character concept and rolled with it. She heard of some plight from another player regarding a nearby village, so she begrudgingly grabbed her dog pack (if memory serves) and went to investigate. And adventure ensued.

I haven't tried this approach yet. My past ideas were to rebuild a local mall from my childhood on one save. On another I'm "gaming the game" by deconstructing a mansion I found to unearth its secrets while using its parts to build my nearby house. Both are on hiatus as I got bored on top of "life" happening. I'd like to approach the game in an RPG mindset to see where that goes.

If one doesn't mind 2D, there is always Terraria (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077TVSKSZ/). It is available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, macOS, Linux, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch. It is more game-y than Minecraft, includes boss fights, and has the crafting recipes listed in the game.

I'm trying Terreria right now on 3DS. It's probably not the best platform as it's not as slick to control IMO as on a console or Vita, but it seems decent. At least in the tutorial anyway.

Yeah, first-person games in general are a problem for me.

What if you change the camera in Minecraft to a 3rd person perspective? Or is that not an option on the consoles? It works in Java Edition.

AFAIK, it wasn't an option in the version I played years ago. If I could play in third person, I'm guessing it wouldn't make me motion sick at all (though there are exceptions), but since I didn't find the game itself appealing, I haven't bothered to look into ways I could play it without motion sickness. I'm not a fan of open world/sandbox games in general. I know it's used as a dirty word in gaming these days, but I actually like "linear" games.

I remember watching a playthrough on youtube of this Minecraft Story Mode. It consisted of two people having unrelated conversations almost the entire time while ignoring the game as much as possible, as the game essentially plays itself and doesn't need user input for most of the game. It's basically complete garbage.

Kinetic novels and similar releases have their place. But if you don't pay attention and get invested in the story, that defeats the purpose. I'm not surprised a video like that would present a game like that in a poor light. Though I do agree that Minecraft is a weird choice for such a game. I guess that's what you get when Telltale Games specialized in a certain kind of game and would apply that style to whatever big IPs they could license.

If you're going to have a game that's almost entirely focused on the story, the story better be good. That's my take on it. It's basically like those interactive storybooks that came out in the 90's, they can be enjoyable for what they are.

I remember with this Minecraft Story Mode, one of the main characters is a literal pig. Eventually the pig is mortally wounded in some sort of heroic way, and when he finally dies, his body poofs into a literal floating pork chop. It was meant to be taken seriously as a dramatic sad moment. Then pork chop appears. This was not a well made story.

First of all, a *SPOILER WARNING* would have been appreciated as this occurs very near the end of the game's story. Second, the "poof plus pork chop" is authentic to Minecraft itself. Finally, I agree that even if it was authentic, that it took away from the poignancy of the moment and should have been omitted. When I was playing Minecraft: Story Mode via Netflix, it was difficult not to laugh at the absurdity of that moment, i.e. a serious, grim scene interspersed with a silly thing like that.

Still, it all gives a new meaning to "this little piggy went to market"...

So I went ahead and bought Minecraft on Switch. Played a bit but it'll be some time before I can weigh in on how it compares to DQB2.

Well... except for one thing where DQB2 is clearly better: the slimes. Probably not controversial to say Dragon Quest slimes are cute and Minecraft slimes... aren't.

EDIT: Someone recommended Terraria, which... well I'm kinda tempted but I'm not sure how I would like it. SomeCallMeJohnny said he couldn't get used to playing it with a controller... and he was using the more 2D-friendly PS4 controller, whereas I would be using the Switch joycons (I don't have an alternative controller yet so... yeah).

That said, I am interested but more because of the horror elements than as a building game--in the latter regard, I dunno, it may be kinda cool but I think I might feel constrained unless I was literally making a game.

Which on that note, Dragon Quest Builders sometimes makes me wish I could use it as an interface to make actual RPGs. Someone should suggest that idea to a budding programmer.

Okay, soooo...

Now that I've played it.... I honestly don't know if I can call one game better than the other, because both games have that effect on me... you know the one: the one where you think it'll only be five minutes but when you're done playing you've missed your entire weekend.

However, I do have the following observations:

1) Minecraft doesn't feel like it explains itself. I had some idea how to do things due to watching Markiplier (because Markiplier is love, Markiplier is life) who used to do a Minecraft series, and also because my niece and nephew are into Minecraft and explained some things to me.

That said, I got as far as crafting chests and beds and my table, making a house, finding some mines (I even found diamond after a long search)... and then I was like, "and then what?" It left me with questions, like what is Lapis Lazuli good for? Or Redstone? How is a Redstone torch better than a normal one?

While Dragon Quest Builder 2's story-driven nature can be a pain sometimes, one complaint I NEVER had was understanding how to do things or how or what things were used for.

2) That said, Minecraft does have the complete and total "I just wanna build, mmkay?" thing going for it.... and another big thing: Multiplayer. DQB2 has multiplayer but in a limited capacity. I might be able to play with my niece and nephew on a shared world next time we're together thanks to Minecraft being cross-platform.

3) Not sure if this counts for anything but I found out you can set the difficulty to "peaceful" in Survival mode, which basically makes it so there's no monsters and you can't really die (I think I managed it once just from a high fall). This makes the game kind of a farming simulator. That said, I find when I jump up to easy, the monsters are a bit... I dunno, they somehow feel overpowered even at such a low level.

So ultimately I think it's a tradeoff... Minecraft offers more freedom but it might be the ultimate example of "requires you to read a strategy guide." Which is probably why there are several published. I'd be happy with one that just tells me what all the items do and what they can be used for.

EDIT: Also, for a game that can be played entirely offline, Minecraft sure seems to expect me to be online a lot. I think not being online actually caused a crash (which wound up erasing a lot of data off my Switch's storage... everything except Dragon Quest Builders 2, ironically, so I kinda wonder if maybe the two games are getting in a fight. Because games are alive, you know). But yeah, the switch release is supposed to have all these texture packs and such but they can only be enabled if you're online and you can't even customize your character's looks without the internet, which is just weird, though I guess it makes some amount of sense. Still, this is a point for DQB2 I feel.
