View Full Version : Games with high mountains?

I brought this up in two other topics then decided it deserved one of its own.
Ever since the coming of 3D gaming, one thing I wanted was a game where at least one area was a tall mountain. Like one where you could take hours to reach the top, and then look down at the world and marvel at how everything is so tiny from up here. Then jump off and feel the thrill of air rushing past you (yeah I'm kinda weird like that).
Also like I said in the JRPGs topic I feel mountains--and tall structures in general--are underutilized as settings since, you know, they could have cave structures or innards that lead back out into walkways that spiral up (think Darm Tower from Ancient Land of Ys, but if it were in a 3D space and continuous as far as system limitations allow).
So anyway, what games do you guys know that have very tall heights? And among those, what are your favorites?

My husband often scales ridiculously tall and steep mountains in Skyrim just for the heck of it, usually while still on horseback, no less.

Super Mario Galaxy has that one very memorable mountain covered with purple coins.
And Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy comes to mind, though I'm not much inclined to try it. It is "aimed towards 'a certain kind of person, to hurt them.'"
For "jumping from high places", there's AaAaAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity (https://store.steampowered.com/app/15520/AaAaAA__A_Reckless_Disregard_for_Gravity/) and its sequel.
And there's https://store.steampowered.com/app/313340/Mountain/ , but that's a different kind of high mountain.

I think I remember Mystical Ninja for N64 having some kind of mountain you had to climb. Obviously you take what you can get with N64 graphics, but I'm pretty sure it was in there.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Let's you do exactly what the OP wants to do, particularly when you climb Mount Doom... *cough* erm... Death Mountain ;)
These aren't modern per se, but there is:
Ice Climbers (it's all tall, icy mountains!)
Super Mario 64 (some tall and/or icy mountains here)
As for more modern, there is:
Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut (Red Mountain)
Sonic Colors (Sweet Mountain)
And about every snowboarding game, but that's more about boarding down from the top of the mountains instead of climbing up from the bottom of the mountains.

Xenoblade Chronicles X. Some are so big you can't even scale them until you get your flying mecha later in the game
Breath of the Wild. Seriously, climbing and traversing them is something else. Esp in the snowy region, One peak with a hole through it is really something to behold.
Ys VIII. You spend half the game trying to get to the peak just to cross to the other side of the island.
Grandia Grandia might be a cheat as it's a wall but it's so insanely huge that when you get to the top it has the game's most iconic cutscene.
Just Cause 3. Nothing that special but it does have one massive mountain.
Xenoblade 1. The snow area is just one massive mountain you go down.
BOTW may have the best sense of scale of all of them tho. It has many peaks but the snow one,you really feel like you just climbed that worlds MT Everest.
How about EVEREST VR and The Climb? They are all about mountain climbing in virtual reality.
Does Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, or Dark Souls 3 have high mountains?

I actually almost picked up Downhill Domination as it seemed perfect, but the vid that brought it to my attention (MetalJesus) mentioned it had a trick/stunt system....
Thing is, another game he recommended that had a stunt system (Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild)... I felt that aspect ruined the game. Primarily because it was not optional, you HAD to perform complicated stunts in order to boost your top speed. I hate when racing games do that. It would be okay if I just had to do flips or something like in Uniracer, but in most racing games I want to just... race. It should be about driving, not about doing 360 noscope roflcopters.
Basically I'm asking: In Downhill Domination, if you're just racing can you ignore the stunt system entirely?

I cant remember but I vaguely recall having to do them to boost my speed similar to Splashdown. the tricks in DD are hard to pull off because you need to press the shoulder buttons. Its somewhat easier in Splashdown but still annoying. honestly there are so many things going on in DD it can be hard to play. the only mercy given to you is that the AI is a little slower. so basically its like if someone chopped off on of your legs and told you to race against a guy who was gonna run at half speed

Mountain King for the Atari 2600
Dragon Quest Builders. Climb mountains, build mountains.
Just Cause. Grappling hook up mountains.
Zelda series. Every game has a Death Mountain.

D2 comes to mind. Early in the game, Laura is thrown into a mountain range, covered in snow (and at times snowing). At the time, it really looked and felt nice traversing the landscape. Ran the game a few months ago via emulation and it still looks pretty decent, specially for the time.

There is a mountain on the map screen, but like I said, 2D games aren't really the same (though I did like Area 5 of Bionic Commando, the big tower stage).
