The object of a 2D fighter is to beat the hell out of your opponents. However, it does make a difference where you beat them up at. Of all the 2D fighters you've played, which background (or stage) do you find the most pleasing to your eyes?
Jubei's stage in Samurai Showdown II is my favorite of all time. The snowy scene where a thatch hut sits in the middle of a huge bamboo thicket is an excellent backdrop. Definitely one of SNK's best stage designs.

from the top of my head, the stage in CvS2 where you fight all the bosses in boss battle mode is badass. On top of s dojo, very gloomy, raining. Of course the dark music playing makes it all the more better.

I love the God Rugal stage on cvs2...the music tops off the picture of Osaka in flames.
On another note, I've heard that in SF2 arcade version, you can see Q in the background of Ken's stage, or at least, the being Q is based off of. Q being the sweet ass being from SF3.

The Cap vs SNK stage, an unfinished dojo, is pretty badass. The more you fight, the more timbers start creaking and sawdust rains down on you until the whole frame comes crashing down from the intensity of the battle. Also, Boss Stage 1 (Sagat) in SFA2 is cool, since you can recreate the scene from the SF movie.

The rain-soaked rooftop in CvS2, of course.
The back alley stage in CvS1 with those shadow effects...
The collapsing CvS1 dojo that Tetsu just mentioned.
The raining park in KoF '99 (if you want to talk about badass rain effects...)
The Art of Fighting team's KoF '96 stage. That sky is amazing, especially in later rounds.

I just thought I'd add another stage to this post on account I played s 2d fighter recently. This one's from Street Fighter Alpha. It's the street markets on Ryu's stage. Not only is it highly detailed, but it has two appearances. One is in the morning, the other is late in the afternoon.

It's official... 2D fighters just look better!

Eternal Champions on the GEN had some of my favorite backgrounds.
Its been a long time since I fired it up though so I can't choose one off the top of my head.

I always liked the stages that are filled with character cameos and in-jokes, like Ken's birthday party from Street Fighter Alpha 2 or the Capcom vs. SNK 2 street backdrop in which you can spot Rouge, Billy Kane, and other fighters.
And I also dig the "Womb of God" setting from Vampire Savior, because it's creepy and almost amusing, particularly when the demon-fetus wakes up at the end of a match.

Hmmmm....
Absolute badassed backround ever:
Last Blade 2 "Stage where the room is on fire"
The sound of the fire raging, boards' falling from the ceiling, just so f*cking awesome....congrats, SNK.

Damn! I can't believe I forgot that stage!
A few more I'd like to add:
Genjuro's stage from Samurai Shodown 2. Although, I admit...the music is what makes this stage.
Tung Fu Rue's stage, Fatal Fury Special: That pan downward at the beginning left me slack-jawed. And I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago!
The rotting old temple in King of Fighters '98, particularly the Dreamcast version.
The 2 boss stages in King of Fighters '96.
By the way, PC Kwajalein, you can see Ryu's Street Fighter Alpha stage in Capcom Vs. SNK's collapsing dojo stage! It's on the left side of the screen!

@ Captain Yashiro
Really? I can't believe I missed it! I'll have to check it out sometime.
And since I'm here, I might as well throw in another favorite stage of mine.
Rikou's stage in Night Warriors is pretty cool. The waterfalls, the palm trees, the parrots. This stage was Capcom's very own ad for traveling to Hawaii ;)

Pretty much any stage with flaming buildings/objects in the background...Team Korea KoF 95, all of the others that have been mentioned, etc. They seem to add to the level of chaos and violence going on in the ring. Also, the Art of Fighting team stage from KoF 95...I love that wooden elevator, and I think it's back in KoF 02, isn't it?

Tung Fu rue´s stage is very nice, but i like a bit more Sagat stages in all SF2 games. Also, Cheng Sinzan stage is very pretty, yes...i think Cheng Sinzan is the best stage of all.
