View Full Version : Evercade by Blaze
I'm posting this thread in Classic Gaming as while the Evercade by Blaze is new hardware it is (so far) designed to run old games made for NES, SNES, Genesis, and Atari 2600 consoles, retro arcade hardware, and eventually Atari Lynx as well as new homebrews for said same old platforms.
I think this thing will make more of a profit and make more of a positive impression upon retro gamers than the Intellivision Amico will. Part of that is the design and aesthetic of the games, part of it is the controllers and hardware, and part of it is the price of the console and games.
Evercade:
Old, proven 2D classic games and "neo retro" indie games with similar aspirations
Portable console with a proven button layout and an included screen plus HDMI output
$80 for the console plus 1 game compilation on cartridge or $100 for the console plus 3 game compilations on cartridge
$20 for each additional game compilation on a cart which includes a case and full-color, printed paper manuals
Amico:
New, 3D remakes of classic games plus the good old originals from Intellivision, Atari, Imagic, etc.
Odd touch-screen motion controllers that are a mix of Intellivision controller, Wii-mote, and classic iPod
$249 for the console
$3 - $10 for digital game downloads; physical games with RFID chips will be available at retail for $30
But enough about the Amico (cool though it might eventually be). Let's hear more about the just-about-ready Evercade from someone who has actually spent some time playing games with one:
DF Retro Hardware - Evercade Review: The Cartridge-Based Retro Handheld That Works by Digital Foundry
We've had a ton of requests to take a look at Blaze's Evercade - a cartridge-based retro handheld. It's certainly a fascinating device with a unique game delivery mechanism, and...

What are everyone's thoughts about the Evercade by Blaze? Have you pre-ordered one? Will you be buying one later if it proves itself?

Isn't the Amico fully licensed in every way? I don't see how this could be, unless the library is severely limited (and probably thus not that great). Part of the reason clones and such can skirt around copyright law is because the consumer acquires the carts (be they legit or bootleg) or ROMs themselves. If this thing uses proprietary carts that Blaze loads with games and sells, what could they actually offer for retro systems like NES, SNES, and Genesis? They could in theory get the license on the developer/publisher's end, like some other publishers have done to re-release retro games, but you're sure as hell not going to get the big-name stuff like Mario and Zelda that way, and if they include those games without permission, this thing is gonna get shut down before it would even go on sale.

The elephant in the room here is this: Most retro gamers own full ROM sets for everything made between 1985 and 1994 minus some of the less popular consoles like 3DO and Jaguar- and they already have the ability to play these games on their PSP, nVidia Shield, Switch, Xbox, etc.
Even for someone like me who doesnt support piracy... if I eant to play Earthworm Jim, I am going to play it on a cartridge... on a Super Nintendo. point is, very limited audience here
Im glad they are going their legal route with licensing and what not but most gamers think everything should be free if its more than 20 years old

On my end, I love that they included cart with homebrew games on it!
That's a brilliant move to offer more than just games that we might already have in our collection.
The cart format is lovely, and the idea to group games is great for a reasonable price (considering the packaging).
I really hope the console finds success so they can release loads of carts with both retro games and homebrew titles!

Everyone knows that roms and emulators exist. And like you point out, most retro gamers already have and use them. But there are still a lot of retro game stores around and games are still selling on eBay. Just for fun, I checked a few of my go to games from when I used to sell online a lot like maybe 15 years ago and they are still selling for about the same price(not factoring in inflation). The point is, the audience may not quite be a limited as you think it is.
Now, having said that, I'm not really in the market for either, but that's mainly because I'm usually not in the market for spending money on such things in general unless I find at a thrift store for cheap. I don't think I've ever bought a game system new before.
Yes, the games included on the carts for the Evercade are licensed by Blaze from the copyright holders of the software in question. So no, you are not going to find Mario and Zelda games for it, but here are the games that are currently available for purchase (https://evercade.co.uk/cartridges/):

Hmm, it's nice that they have the likes of Namco and Technos onboard, but as I predicted, it seems like it's going to be very limited in terms of what NES, SNES, and Genesis games it'll have, and it seems like it's mostly the same stuff that's already been re-released via various recent compilations. Doesn't really seem worth buying a new piece of hardware for to me, especially when the D-pad looks lackluster, making me wonder how well these games would control. That said, I'm not interested in the Amico either.

They are not done announcing publishers yet. They only announce them when they announced a new compilation.
Blaze is going to announce a new compilation in May and announce another new Compilation in June. Those are the final 2 compilations that will be released this year.

Blaze had a question and Answer session on Twitter and and Facebook on Saturday. I am not a member of either. I am able to read posts without being a member.
Arcade releases on Evercade are not happening before 2021 based on what they mentioned on Saturday. They mention that they have a lot of arcade game rights. I know they mention Namco arcade games on Saturday, but I'm under the impression that they would be releasing more arcade games that are not Namco.
Blaze's response to a question some type of an RPG collection or RPG pack points they want to do one. That means there has to be a publisher or developer not mentioned yet. Unless it is Bard's Tale series by Interplay, there has be a different developer or publisher that Blaze did not list yet.

I wouldn't really take "wanting to do one" as indicative as confirmation they will. To me, it reads more like PR speak that they don't yet have deals with publishers with many RPGs in their catalogs and are hoping somebody will sign on with them. I imagine a lot of publishers would want to first see how the initial release goes. If it's not a big success, this could peter out fast. I'm sure there could be more publishers signing on for the future compilations, but when they've got 140 games all coming from, what, fewer than 10 different publishers, with a number of those having little to no history with retro consoles like the NES, SNES, and Genesis, I don't picture this ever having many games from those libraries.
I am scheduled to recieve my unit on Monday. I know that i already have access to
all the games i ordered but i love the idea of having another handheld.
Plus, i have been reading good reviews from so many people on facebook.

Fair Enough and that is not on you. The problem is Blaze Entertainment does not always update their front page in a timely matter for Evercade even before than. While they both links had May 22nd, your link did not give the entire time frame at all for receiving it. That link I gave had a May to June time length date. That is an issue considering Evercade only was shipping to businesses on May 22nd not to customers. Some of the people in Europe got their evercade before June though. This is a handheld that had Amazon problems for sending to customers including my younger brother.
Even before Evercade even make that announcement that I linked, they were slow in changing the release date of the system. When Blaze announcement the system was going to be delayed due to the coronavirus, their front page on their website still had their original release date over a week.
I went back to the link I had and they changed their date even after the date I posted on April 27th. I started following Evercade back in February.
I saw the change originally on their Twitter account and I believe their facebook account also. I do not own a facebook account or a twitter account, but I am allowed to read stuff the Evercade accounts they have. They first announce their news on Twitter and Facebook.

The Information the OP did is now a bit outdated concerning Evercade. There is more information known about Evercade now than back on April 26th. What I am referring to is the capabilities of Evercade.
Blaze announced last week that 2 of the games on Piko Interactive Collection 2 for Evercade are 32 bit games. Football Madness is a original Playstation release that released in Europe in 2003. Racing Fever is a Game Boy Advance Game that was released in Europe back in 2005.
Of the 2 systems, the original Playstation tells the possible 3d capabilities Evercade can handle. I know the 3d is dated on the original Playstation.
What's been happening with the Evercade? I haven't read anything by anyone about it for some time; however, I usually don't visit their official site.

Firmware 1.3 is now available. This was a big firmware update. It fixed different HDMI issues, Audio glitches and resolution bugs in games. Evercade's emulator is now able to handle large title games such as PS1 games.
The firmware does get a rid of the well known Top Racer Glitch. The emulator was fixed from this update for handling large game files such as PS1 games. The firmware update added new features such as critical battery alert, fixes bad save states, better handling of vertical overscan cropping on handheld mode for all games, added new max brightness setting and other features I didn't mention.

I know its been over a month, but there was nothing to mention on the Evercade for announcements.
Blaze did a 1 hour question and answer session on Friday on Twitter. I'm giving some of the highlights to the answers.
Blaze wants 16 game cartridge to be released in 2021 besides the 14 that are released this year. They also said they want Evercade to have a total of over 350 games at the end of 2021.
They said arcade games are likely to come on Evercade during Quarter 3 2021.
Accessories are going to be worked for 2021.
Blaze said they are working a title to be translated for Evercade, but didn't say the name of the title.

Hmm, that "unreleased" tennis game looks one heck of a lot like Pete Sampras Tennis for Sega Genesis. One suspects it's the same game with the license stripped out, though if they're clever, perhaps they also enabled PST's hidden world tour mode.

Blaze Entertainment did have an explanation for that. Pete Sampras Tennis started its life as Tennis All-Stars, but it was changed and modified.
I also do known that Evercade's Piko Interactive Collection 2 has 3 sports games that changed their name of the title due to not having the license.

When I first heard of Evercade VS, I figured it would just be a way for two Evercades to play together with a multi-tap device. I never would have guessed it would be a stand alone console with 4 USB controller ports that ditched the portable aspect altogether. Not only does the Evercade VS eschew portability, it replaces the portbles 1.2Ghz ARM Quad Core processor with a 1.5 Ghz Quad Core processor backed by 512MB of DRAM and 4GB of internal storage. The Evercade VS outputs a full HD resolution 1080p vs the portables 720p. It's backwards compatible with entire Evercade library of games except for the Namco Collections, which were only licensed for portable use from Namco. How the Evercade VS prevents them from playing, I have no clue. Evercade is promising that all collections going forward will work on both systems. Looking at the Evercade library, it seemed obvious that the portable could handle 8/16 bit games. I wasn't sure if it could handle 32 bit games. I wonder if compatibility between the two systems will limit the more robust VS console.
I pre-order the Evercade portable with it's full library of cartridges available at the time from Funstock in the UK early in 2020. Was notified in March of a shipping delay (possibly COVID related) and cancelled my pre-order. I vaguely remember fearing this thing could end up being vaporware. I used my refund to purchase a $500 Analogue Nt Mini Noir which I don't regret. When I got around to re-ordering the in stock Evercade portable system in fall of last year from VGP Video Games Plus in Canada, I was hoping that I could purchase the entire game library with one region code. Evercade struck me as being a European product, so I hoped to get a PEGI rating on the front of each game case. Alas, it was not to be no matter how hard I searched. Some have PEGI ratings and some don't without rhyme or reason. The collector in me wasn't happy, but ces't la vie. At least it doesn't show from the spine.
https://i.ibb.co/cYpyrH3/Evercade.jpg (https://ibb.co/Dr61RyW)
I don't have an Evercade to have a new way to play retro games. What interested me were the collections of Indie games that I could play inexpensively on a HD TV.

OEB Pete had Blaze Entertainment's Sean Cleaver on his channel for more than revealing Intellivision 1 Collection. There was some stuff revealed on it.
Team 17 Collection 2 is not in the works currently.
Namco Arcade collection does not seem to be in the works right now. Blaze wants the 2 Namco Collections to be on the Evercade VS, but is not currently due to contract terms.

The Premium Pack for the Evercade handheld be increased to 99.99 pounds, 109.99 Euros, and $109.99 They mentioned this change is caused by high demand and shortage of screens and chips.
Evercade cartridges increased to 17.99 pounds and 19.99 Euros. Price does not change for United States.

I played Evercade VS already due to my younger brother. He pre-ordered it from Songbird Productions and got it last week. What I know is People who pre-ordered from Songbird Productions get theirs in the United States already.
Songbird Productions is a Atari Lynx and Atari Jaguar seller online that also does homebrew games for the Jaguar and the Lynx. Some of the Atari Lynx games on Evercade are owned by Songbird Productions and do sell Evercade products on their website. They are a small company in Minnesota. I don't know how they got their shipments already, but they did.
The only people right now in the United Stated that already have their Evercade VS where they live is from pre-ordering it outside of the United States or from from Songbird.

The Special Handheld Edition was a $135 Purple version sold only at Funstock UK. Scalpers have a few on eBay. I purchased a VS Premium Pack from VideoGamesPlus in Canada because it offered free shipping. They had a Intellivision 1 cartridge and a Bitmap Brothers 1 cartridge bundle with free shipping that I also ordered. Ordered them last Sunday and had a shipping confirmation Monday. I did not see Songbird or Funstock offering free shipping, but Amazon is if you don't mind waiting until the end of month to get your order. VideoGamesPlus is out of the VS Starter Packs and Songbird and Funstock are out of the VS Premium Packs. The newer slate of Evercade cartrides are hit or miss no matter where you look.

My younger brother and I had bad experiences with Amazon in terms of Evercade pre-orders in the past. Amazon for Evercade products is only fine if you are not pre-ordering from 2020 experience.
We used Amazon for Evercade pre-orders in 2020 multiple times and they canceled our pre-orders each time. Back in 2020, we used them for preordering Everade and all the launch Collections. We pre-order the Xeno Crisis/Tanglewood Collection and the Oliver Twins Collection from Amazon and we got those 2 collection canceled by Amazon themselves. After they canceled those 2 carts on us, we decided to stop pre-order Evercade products.
We pre-ordered multiple game collections there and Amazon Canceled them on us like they did for the Evercade itself. We gave Amazon 3 chances for Evercade. I ordered stuff from Amazon outside Evercade with no problem. The Evercade issues we had also happened to other Amazon customers.
Blaze had to straighten misses out in the past with Amazon for other people. It continued for other game pre-order f after we stopped pre-ordering Evercade games from Amazon.
Songbird was used for Evercade VS due to the size of the order in terms of shipping cost since I live Wisconsin instead using Funstock. The Evercade vs Premium was received on January 24th. We pre-ordered Evercade VS premium pack along with the 4 separate collections from Songbird. People already got their Songbird pre-orders received way before the February 25th date. Songbird is a smaller company and they don't the amount inventory as Amazon does as a result. The only advice I had is when pre-orders are first available for Songbird, jump on it.

I knew going in that I wouldn't be willing to use a controller D-pad for very long to play games. It was a pleasant surprise to find that PlayStation and Xbox controller analog sticks work just fine with the Evercade VS. The Evercade fansite https://evercade.info/ is documenting VS controller compatibility. With Arcade cartridges coming out on the VS, it might be nice to find an arcade stick that works with the VS. A USB trackball that works with the VS would make Centipede, Millipede, Missile Command and Crystal Castle games already on the system even more fun to play.
Evercade Info is also keeping track of the free games available when there is a game in both VS cartridge slots and other secrets and Easter eggs at https://evercade.info/vs-secrets-and-easter-eggs/
When I was looking at Evercade games at Amazon I saw that they were selling a paper Evercade Fanzine, but it's available free by signing up for a mailing list or you view them free at Evercade Info.
When I pre-ordered my first Evercade handheld from Funstock UK, it was delayed so long I thought it was vaporware and cancelled my pre-order. It's hard to believe how this thing has taken off and garnered so many followers so quickly. It's detractors seem to scoff at the idea of paying for cartridges instead of Evercade catering to those with full ROM sets, but lots of people seem to be trying for a complete set of games. Evercade discontinuing cartridges will only fuel collector FOMO, but at least they are cheap and seem readily available.

Evercade discontinuing carts is only due to the contract Blaze has or had with the companies. I can't explain Technos Collection 1 being discontinued outside of amount of time.
Namco's contract with Blaze was weird to begin with because those two collections were exclusive to Europe and can't be played on the Evercade vs due to Contract.
There a relationship issue it seems with Blaze Entertainment and the Japan branch of Namco.
Oliver Twins collection agreement with Blaze was reached under unique circumstances because the sales of the cart went to fundraising. Oliver Twins and Evercade teamed up to raise money for the National video game Museum in Sheffield, England. It has to be assumed the fundraising is only up to a certain amount of time.

The original model of Evercade is being discontinue and the final firmware update for the orginal Evercade handheld happens later this year. Feature game Collection even in 2023 will be able to be played on the handhelds, but you would be with any glitches.
I understand the original Evercade being discontinued only because of the spec differences between the Evercade EXP and the original Evercade handheld along with features that the original Evercade didn't have.
Those are some really great collections if you're a shmup fan.
With the announcement of a more powerful successor and phasing out of the first model, doesn't that kinda shit on the people that bought the VS console?

With the announcement of a more powerful successor and phasing out of the first model, doesn't that kinda shit on the people that bought the VS console?
The new Evercade EXP handheld merely catches up to the specs of the Evercade VS. It's the owners of the original Evercade handheld that are being left behind. I recall when the more powerful Evercade VS was released, Evercade was stating that all new cartridges going forward would be compatible with both the older handheld and the newer Evercade console. I wondered how that was going to work out. Would not the owners of the Evercade VS want to take full advantage of it's improvements and not be held back by the older hardware? Well, I guess the answer to that question has finally been answered. By the way, the new Evercade EXP only outputs 720p where as the Evercade VS outputs 1080p.
I think the original Evercade handheld was sold in a Founder's Edition Black, standard edition white and special edition purple editions. Those early adopters just got bitch slapped.
The new Evercade EXP handheld merely catches up to the specs of the Evercade VS.
Gotcha, I was unaware than the VS was more powerful than the original handheld.

The MSRP for the original Evecade handheld was $79.99. The MSRP for the Evercade VS was $99.99. The new Evercade EXP handheld MSRP is $149.99. The EXP has the same screen size as the original, but now uses a IPS screen which are more expensive and require more power. They are noted for having a worse response time, refresh rate and contrast ratio. But the EXP has built in Wi-Fi and the revamped button layout that supports Tate Mode.
I wonder if the VS will receive an update to allow for a Tate Mode display. I also wonder if the discontinued Namco cartridges will work on the new EXP.
Evercade currently emulates Arcade, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari Lynx, GB, GBC, GBA, Intellivision, NES, SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System and PSX.
