For me, the first one that comes to mind is Bubsy. I don't remember any sort of life meter or anything that allows you take a second or third hit, like a mushroom in Mario or a ring in Sonic. You get running fast and suddenly a gumball machine kills you. Of course there is invincibility but short that, you can't take multiple hits.
Lolo is another one like this where it's instant death if an enemy touches you.
And of course all the old classics have that formula- Pac-Man, Galaga, Dig Dug, etc.

I debated whether or not to include Contra because even though you lose a life upon taking a single hit, you dont start back at the beginning of the level or the last checkpoint. though I suppose that would be the same as the others I mentioned like Pac-Man and Galaga. so yeah I would include Metal Slug on there
I have to put Choplifter and Fantasy Zone on there as well, two of my favorites on the Master System

Well if it's nes/arcade contra yeah has no setback for loosing a life but it sucks loosing you're power ups.Unlike the japanese version of contra hard corps which has a four point meter.Beside just about any shmup that has a one hit that i enjoy gradius, daruis gaiden,r-type etc.

I have a great time with Yo! Noid on NES. I've played it since I was probably 4 and It's pretty easy for me to get through it only dying a couple times if at all.
