1up Restorations is headed up by George Portugal, who in addition to being an experienced modder is also the Chief Preservationist for Long Island Retro Gaming. Our popular "Fix It Friday" videos on YouTube have not only given inexperienced would be modders an entry point in to the world of modifications and repairs, but have also helped to strengthen the bonds in the classic gaming community.

Anyone here try these services from this repair shop?

I needed a Colecovision done, was going to inquire with Ruggers but they always seem to be swamped. What's really whacky nowadays is how all these modding services require you the customer to source the boards required.

I'm lucky to have a husband who is not only also into retro gaming like me but is a bit of a tinkerer, so any mod or repair that's beyond my skills he can handle. He's done a lot of work on our CRTs, made a consolized MVS, modded a couple handhelds to have backlit screens, has replaced dying capacitors and fixed other issues, etc. The only hard part is convincing him to work on the systems he doesn't have much interest in, haha. He doesn't really care about anything Atari or pre-third gen, but he did eventually fix the 7800 we found (spotted some damage on the board or something and put in a jumper wire). I'm hoping he can someday figure out the issue with my Colecovision. He put in a little work years ago, but it didn't solve the issue. Might need an entirely new power switch (if that's even the issue, though, from what I've read, it often is).

My advice is to get one of these, resolved multiple issues I was having. The OEM power supplies are terrible.

PS: What part of the country are you in? I need my CRT serviced!

Haha, we're in NYC. I've been telling him for years that he could totally make a side hustle out of his tinkering if he wanted to, but so far, he hasn't been interested.

Thanks for the recommendation for the Colecovision. It turns on, but I get garbled graphics. I've heard it can be related to the power switch, but we really should check everything regarding the power. We'll have to see if the power supply is causing any issues.

So I finally got around to contact 1UP about having my Colecovision upgraded. During the course of that convo, he said that he could also install the 3DO RGB kit, which I had recently purchased before the backstock was gone for good. That system already had a 240p switch and the Fixel ODE for the FZ-1 installed. Anyway, I sent the CV first out to Long Island, and it came back pretty fast. They did the VRAM upgrade, and installed the TMS RGB to an outer port in place of the old Yurkie TRRS jack. I got it back, and unfortunately that GEN-2 jack wasn't deep enough for my SCART cable, and even had some issues with the HD Retrovision fitting.

1Up then graciously offered to find a "donor" CV bottom shell, since this one was hacked up, and would install an internal GEN-2 jack in place of the RF Modulator! I can't recall if I supplied the jack or he did. In any case, I went the CV bottom and board back, this time with my 3DO. Once again, after a short turnaround, he'd installed it perfectly, and the CV was outputting RGB, composite, flawlessly.

The 3DO was less work I believe, and similarly involved replacing the RF jack on there with the GEN-2 jack which I believe I supplied along with the new label bezel. He kept the original S-Video/RCA jacks active as well.

As I said, the work turned out great, and I would absolutely recommend their services.
