View Full Version : Mortal Kombat Nitro Edition, The Cancelled Mortal Kombat "1.5" for SNES
Mr. Fink, developer on this project, explained in a recent interview that MK: Nitro Edition would have been a bloodier, faster playing Mortal Kombat 1 for Super Nintendo featuring 2 fatalities per character, different costumes for each character, multiple game story endings per character, and additional playable characters from MK1 like Reptile, Goro, Shang Tsung, and a few playable characters from MK2, almost like a preview of Mortal Kombat II. However, while development on the game had been started, the project was cancelled by management, likely to clear the way for MK2's launch which would have been less than a year after Mortal Kombat: Nitro Edition would have been scheduled to launch.
How well would Nitro Edition have sold? Would you or your parents or family have bought the MK:NE game if it had launched before MK2?

Interesting story- could have changed a lot of things. I remember being amazed when MK2 came out on Genesis. I didn't realize Nintendo would have played ball at that time with a hallmark genesis franchise.

So what your saying this person is planning to release an offiical licensed version of MK1.5 on the SNES with netplay ( Wi-fi I am guessing ) ???
FYI everybody knows the SNES version of MK uncensored would have mopped the floor anything Genesis/MD version if there was no censorship policy. Side-by-Side is what crippled any chance of the SNES version from being a thing.
Besides the Genesis was this !!bbbbiigggg!!! Blllacckk !!!! Thinngg !!!! in our faces.
Without the negative feedback associated with that word or idea, the MD version would have gotten the popularity vote. SNES anything of Genesis was a slap in the face of SNES players. If my/our parents was sane enough to ignore the release of the SNES ( and "civil-assemble" to have a NES that was backwards compadible instead ) we all would be player super-charged Genesis cartridges simular to the
"Super Gameboy" on the Genesis right now. AKA 32X.
But again content wise no.

You consider the SNES that much better than the original 16bit Genesis? Probably is better, but at the time they seemed like near peers. Some games favored sega, others nintendo.
I genuinely appreciate people taking the time to discuss and document the story behind this game. That being said, the actual ROM being shown off is a buggy mess that shows basically nothing. You could do just as much (or more) with just a Game Genie with codes were available in '93. By saying that I'm not shitting on the guys responsible for the video, but rather keeping fan's expectations grounded when they see headlines like "Prototype found and running on real hardware!"
A significant number of entitled people instantly start ROM begging and flat out insulting the PCB owner if they don't bother to dump and publicly release stuff like this. Nevermind the fact that even if he did that, they'd play this for 5 seconds then move onto the next oddball game in their ROM folder.
