Donkey Kong Champion Wins Defamation Case Against Australian YouTuber Karl Jobst - Slashdot

Posted by BeauHD on Tuesday April 01, 2025 @06:10PM from the rights-and-Kong dept.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Guardian: A professional YouTuber in Queensland has been ordered to pay $350,000 plus interest and costs to the former world record score holder for Donkey Kong, after the Brisbane district court found the YouTuber had defamed him "recklessly" with false claims of a link between a lawsuit and another YouTuber's suicide
. William "Billy" Mitchell, an American gamer who had held world records in Donkey Kong and Pac-Man going back to 1982, as recognized by the Guinness World Records and the video game database Twin Galaxies, brought the case against Karl Jobst, seeking $400,000 in general damages and $50,000 in aggravated damages.

Jobst, who makes videos about "speed running" (finishing games as fast as possible), as well as gaming records and cheating in games, made a number of allegations against Mitchell in a 2021 YouTube video. He accused Mitchell of cheating, and "pursuing unmeritorious litigation" against others who had also accused him of cheating, the court judgment stated. The court heard Mitchell was accused in 2017 of cheating in his Donkey Kong world records by using emulation software instead of original arcade hardware. Twin Galaxies investigated the allegation, and subsequently removed Mitchell's scores and banned him from participating in its competitions. The Guinness World Records disqualified Mitchell as a holder of all his records -- in both Donkey Kong and Pac-Man -- after the Twin Galaxies decision. The judgment stated that Jobst's 2021 video also linked the December 2020 suicide of another YouTuber, Apollo Legend, to "stress arising from [his] settlement" with Mitchell, and wrongly asserted that Apollo Legend had to pay Mitchell "a large sum of money."

Did Billy Mitchell lawsuit caused that person to commit suicide?

We all know the former creator of that videogame forum attempt to per-meditate murder by kicking a translator while he was down via insults about the passing of his mother, over making a great translation that is direct and not-censored. Like the great "Tales Of Phantasia" Translation we all enjoy.

We all know that Chris Chan was setup by that Forums creator/moderator along with a woman who parents are military nuts in a per-meditated murder via suicide attempt. First by having him arrested ( embarrassed ) and then using other people to make him look worst. When in reality no harm was done at all.

That is the question of the day. He was being sued because of his freedom of speech, and if Billy Mitchell was innocent why have a lawsuit? Is Mitchell scraping the sand for Koopa coins?

It is like that Martial-artist gym-leader who was shown a video of a disabled young black person being violently attack on the spot bleeding out, where the camera also showed another disabled person in a cult like garment to the side.

Or how a college coach ( who job is to be strong ) got off easy when he chased down a drunk man who tapped on his car glass. Instead of telling his partner to call the cops and holding him down. He just one-hit punched him. a fourty-plus year old drunk Graphic Designer. Now in jail for a limited time. I mean chasing down somebody 1 AM in the morning and !!!! only turning himself in !!!!!! ; when he saw footage of himself chasing down the man. 1AM in the morning to chase down a drunk looking for his uber-ride, that was attacked/yelled at by two other people prior.

Who is to say who is wrong? When "Hollywood Hulk" giving advice to his daughter about marrying a black man. "It will not be the same". That was his privacy correct? Among other things he said in privacy.

White-lobster drop killed two young boys in favor of Bill Clinton's brothers addition problem. AKA cocaine-bear video with his saying the N-word.

Gametrek's intense need to take their meds aside.....

What I find most funny about this Billy didn't actually prove his side of the case. "He said bad things about me!!" in of itself is difficult to sue for. So instead, you sue for damages that resulted from those bad things being said. But read the court documents again, he didn't actually do that. He provided no evidence that being accused of suicide baiting someone actually cost him a single penny. The actual funny part is the judge didn't seem to request it either. Jobst did such an amazing job fucking up, Billy won with an argument of 'no u' and that's it.

An update, Jobst appealed and lost. His fees now seem to be the $1.8 million AUS range.
Edit: And now he's filed for bankruptcy.
Edit: Lost his job now and had to sell his home. This isn't even fun to read about anymore, it's just fucking sad.
