Bubsy 4D is an future platforming game from the Bubsy video game series. It is the series' first fully 3D entry in almost 30 years, following Bubsy 3D, and the first to be developed by Fabraz and published by Atari. It is scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.

I keep adding these Bubsy games to my watchlist like I'm actually going to play them. And I never do because they just aren't very good. It's mostly a history and nostalgia thing. 4D...looks kinda good, but I'm going to wait for reviews to pour in. If it's just made 'in the model' of the previous titles, well. Intention 'accidentally bad' is still bad.

I'm just wondering who ask for this since the bubsy series was never good to begin with.

I'm just wondering who ask.

Furries.
That's the actual, real answer and it's pretty clear from the cover art for 4D.

And retro enthusiasts or something, I guess. Statistically, there have to be people who really like the Bubsy games.

Nah, I don't think furries are big on Bubsy, and most retro gamers seem to have the same response as us: "Why?"

I think why it keeps coming back is because it's basically a meme now. Like remember the big fad of calling GameStop to ask if they had Battletoads, mostly kids who had never even played or heard of Battletoads prior to that? Gamers who are younger than most of us, let's say younger millennials and zoomers, eat up doing things ironically for "the lulz". Most of the people interested in these new Bubsy games are probably too young to have played Bubsy back in the 90s but are amused by the infamous reputation the series has.

Similar mentality behind why, say, serious romance games are still super niche but the general public will eat up some wacky parody like Date Everything. It's all about the irony and memes.

While my one friend who is a regular Encyclopedia Furtanica has pointed out to me that you're right about Bubsy in general (apparently he's a very niche fandom character), the developer of Bubsy 4D, Fabraz, is a casual furry. Take that as you shall.

How expensive could the IP be, anyway? Seems like reviving a dead, cheap IP would be a quick way to turn a profit if you're a competent dev. Or I guess just making poorly optimized ports, ala Piko Interactive.

I'm not familiar with the developer, but that makes sense. If you're looking for artists to work on something with anthropomorphic animals these days, it makes sense to pull from the experience of the furry community. And the hand-drawn art for Bubsy 4D is probably the best (and least punchable, haha) official art there has ever been of Bubsy. But I still wouldn't touch a game inspired by Bubsy 3D with a ten-foot pole. Even if it plays competently (which Bubsy 3D most definitely did not), I don't want to look at anything that resembles the nightmarish landscapes of Bubsy 3D.

Tangentially related, Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection was released and half the achievement names are apologies for making you actually finish the games.

A reviewer for Nintendo World Report TV commented that he played a lot of AAA and indie games at Gamescom this year and found himself thinking he would rather be playing Bubsy 4D.

I think it was Taylor Swift who noted that haters gonna hate, hate, hate, but players gonna play, play, play.
I think I too will shake it off and buy this game. Having collected every Bubsy game over the years, save Bubsy II on the Game Boy, but never played them, I was very surprised when I saw gameplay footage showing that Bubsy can morph into a hairball! Well I'll be damned, Samus can kiss my ass.

Hopefully it will be a decent game. I do own the first of these Bubsy revivals, The Woolies Strike Back. Two copies, in fact. A friend bought me them because they were dirt cheap and he wanted to troll me, haha. Haven't played it yet, but I do like Black Forest Games' work on Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. I also like Chris Huelsbeck as a composer. So I wouldn't be surprised if it's more enjoyable than any of the classic Bubsy games. Paws on Fire has a similarly decent developer + composer combo, though I don't have that one. Also not super big on runners, but I liked Runner 2 okay.

This. I know this particular game isn't LRG, but LRG has been releasing a lot of meme games for awhile now.

Considering the Purrfect Collection was handled by LRG, I wouldn't be surprised if Atari works with LRG to do physical releases of Bubsy 4D too, unless they've already announced otherwise. I'm sure the timing of the Purrfect Collection's release and the announcement of Bubsy 4D isn't coincidental either, and the Purrfect Collection very well may have not happened if not for the fact LRG has a huge Bubsy fan on staff now. So if all this other Bubsy stuff weren't going on, maybe there wouldn't have even been a Bubsy 4D. So LRG may be to thank (or curse, haha) for all of it.

It shockingly doesn't look that bad.

I played the demo. It's... A surprisingly good platformer. It may not be the best ever and it could be about a 7.5 to 8 out of 10, but good.
