View Full Version : My 'find' for the day. A complete video store lol.

Well, sort of. The very last (I think) Ma & Pa video store in my area was going out of business and by a stroke of luck, they called me to say that they would be willing to sell me their SNES and Genesis collection, which I think I enquired about last year. Instead, I ended up buying over 700+ DVDs, 300+ SNES games, 400+ Genesis Games, 125+ N64 games, 400 PSX games, 200 or so PS2 games, around 60 X Box games and around 40 Gamecube games, plus 5,000+ VHS tapes and, lol, 400 books on tape. I got a good deal too, $30,000. To be paid in $5,000 payments every two months for a year, and $3,000 up front. I was given a catalog of what I'm getting, and I get everything on September 1st.
What I'm going to do with it all... or more specificly, where I'm going to put it all is up in the air. I got pretty much everything they had. I didn't get the systems, the DVD players, the monitors, the cash machine, any of the fixtures, or anything like that. I was like "Only $30,000?" And the owner said something to the effect of he would have only made half of that or less in a going out of business sale, and that the fixtures were worth more. Did I overpay? Almost certainly, but I got lots of good stuff.

Well I wouldn't go that far. The video game side of things, you have to remember that everything is a rental. The things on disc that I inspected were in fair shape or worse, for the most part. I went with the deal for the movies mostly.
I'm going to sell lots of it right away. All the extra games first, including ALL of the N64 games.
I forgot to mention that some DC stuff is included, but it's only about 10 games or so lol, and all launch titles.

I would be interested in the SNES titles (either single ones that I need or the entire amount). Depending on how you want to sell them. Drop me a PM when you get everything ironed out. Good luck on your find!

I recall when the mom & pop video store in my area closed down, round about 1998... I cleaned up on NES, Genesis and Turbografx games. I sold quite a few of them later on, but several choice games I kept (Thunder Force IV, which I refuse to call Lightening Force, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, The Guardian Legend and Shockman, among others), all with their original boxes and instructions for the most part, and in quite good shape considering that they were rentals - especially the Turbo games.

Let me get all these ducks in one row..
I have to call bullshit on this because $30,000 worth of items just doesn't get owner financed to a guy who hasn't talked to "ma and pa" in a year.. in fact I don't know ANYONE who would just let someone walk out a door with $30,000 worth of items for $5000 down.. You can put $5000 down, but it better have a check from the credit union for $25,000 with it.
Ma and Pa video stores don't carry games anymore (haven't sense CD games), and they certainly don't carry more Xbox/PS2 games then my local Blockbusters.

I don't see why they wouldn't carry games. And I'm entering into a legal contract here. This isn't some stupid "I give you my word" deal here. I'm actually paying him through his bank, and an actual legal contract has been signed.

My wife approved... in fact, she was there. The negotiations went along the lines of "I want all the video game stuff." Then he threw out a few numbers and we ended up with everything. The video tape collection is pretty damn cool.
I've gone through the list... I think about 50 or so SNES games and over 100 Genny games will be sold, as I already have them. All the other stuff is to be determined.

What exactly are you planning on doing with 5,000 VHS tapes? I know you said you weren't sure, but it just seems like while you got alot of good schwag, you also paid a pretty penny for alot of outdated, non-collectable technology (the Gamecube games LOL no, the VHS tapes). It's still an interesting lot to purchase, I just wonder if you could have negotiated a better deal without having to pay for all those copies of Ernest Goes to Camp.

This is what I am thinking. I am guessing a HUGE number of the stuff he gets is complete garbage. I live next to a "mom and pop" video store. Let me tell you, there are some pretty crappy games and movies in there. I wouldn't be suprised if as much as half of it or more turns out being junk.
Furthermore, the stuff is all rentals. Guaranteed a percentage will not work and then alot of the stuff is going to be pretty beat up. I am guessing a large precentage of the items are unsellable. Nobody is really looking to pay money for a used rental copy of Home Alone 3 on VHS.
I just can't see paying $30,000. I think it's insanity. Imagine having $30,000 to spend on video games and movies. You could go out and buy the cream of the crop, the rarest and best games, the coolest DVD's and VHS's and still have plenty of money left over for a monster tv and stereo system. Heck, with $30,000 you could put together one hell of a game room.
Instead he will have a bunch of boxes of old, crappy movies and games, just taking up space, getting no use.
Sorry, this is just my opinion.

Lets break this down into what average prices are for rentals going on ebay assuming NONE of these games are sports and none of the movies are more than 5 years old (Not likely at all in either case:
700 DVDs - $5-$7 each - $3,800
300 SNES games - $2 each - $600
400 Genesis Games - $1-2 each - $500
125 N64 games - $4-$6 each - $600
400 PSX games - $5-$10 each - $2,200
200 or so PS2 games - $10-$20 each - $3,500
60 X Box games - $10-$20 each - $1,000
40 Gamecube games - $10-$20 each - $500
5,000+ VHS tapes - $1-$4 each - $12,000
400 books on tape - $I have no idea - $700
Total amount if purchased on ebay - $25,400

Charlie won't be the first wrestler venturing into this territory. I heard that Booker T from WWE owns his own game store in Houston, and that he actually works in the store when he's not on the road...so I can't imagine he's there all that much.
I actually had a dream once that I visited this store. Booker was there and he was totally kayfabe the whole time.
Me: "Do you have 'Hover Strike' for the Atari Jaguar?"
Booker T: "What?! Sucka, we got Sony and Nintendo here and thassit! Git' yo punk-ass play-a-system-nobody-ever-heard-of ass outta here!"
Hopefully Charlie will be more accommodating to the classic fans such as we LOL

@Sylentwulf: Damn you, I felt pretty good about it before you posted here.
I need to point out that I am granted some kind of relief for every item that I can confirm doesn't work.
Yes, most of the tapes are junk, but there is over 5,000 of them. Including a couple hundred good old fasioned porn tapes.
I'll have a complete list of the SNES and Genesis stuff that's up for trade. You would THINK there were a lot of sports games but there really wasn't... only about 30 or so Genesis ones and about the same for the SNES. Not to shabby at all. And I got some good rare stuff. A Qix game for the Genesis, Ogre Battle for the SNES.
The best part IMO is all the out-of-print Disney tapes. Lots and lots and lots of them.

If you are going to pay $30,000 for all of that, I think that you will end up paying WAY too much.
2nd of all, I don't know what you do for a living, but $2,500 per month of truly disposable income would mean that you probably make close to $80,000 per year. Hmmm....
Finally, if this is truly BS, why post it?
If it's not - more power to ya, I just think that you could truly be selective on just about any of the items you wanted from the store, and purchase them on eBay for far less than $30,000.
Either way, I don't know why I bothered reading this post.

If you found someone to front you $25,000 with only a piece of paper that says you will pay it then you found the most trusting people on planet Earth. I have bought and sold business in the past and I have never ever heard of this sort of arrangment. They have everything to lose and take all the risk. If you claimed bankruptcy they couldnt get a dime from you. If you left the state they couldnt get a dime from you and if they died you probably wouldn't have to pay next of kin. They take ALL the risk. I would really like to see a picture of the collection. Also I would think you would have to rent a storage fascility at $75+ a month ( I dont know where you live). My bet is that you will right us to tell us you decided not to go with the deal or will never send us proof.

Okay, I'll assume he's telling the truth. What I don't get, though, is the pro wrestler bit. I have some pro wrestling training (both with the now defunct JCW from New Jersey and the soon to be defunct Killer Kowalski school in MA). I know quite a few indy wrestlers. None of them make the type of money it would require to make this purchase. Hell, top name indy guys don't make that kind of money. Mostly unknown wrestlers wrestle at a loss, not at a financial gain. They live in their cars and eat raw potatoes. That's the part of this story that doesn't add up.

all I can say is that if you paid 30 grand for that load, you got screwed (no vasoline, no rubber, no kiss afterwards)
I was in a bidding war for the classic (pre NES + Jaguar) inventory of a local Mom & Pop game shop chain (Games+) with another guy. He ended up winning for $6500. The collection included over 30 copies of Tank Command new in box, over a hundred hundred NIB Jaguar games, several hundred 2600/5200/7800 games, buttloads of Odyssey2 and Intv games, and about 40 systems (Intv, 2600, 7800, Odyssey2, Channel F, Microvision, etc)
I moved some of the stuff for the guy that bought it and dont think much of it has seen the light of day sense. He has an Amiga business and I think he's holding all this stuff to sell for big bucks down the road. I wish I'd been able to afford to buy all that stuff, as I'd have kept at least one of each game and sold off the majority on this board and AtariAge.
So, what I'm saying is that if Charlie bought that crap for 30k, he got it put to him hard.. I personally think he's full of fecal matter (keepin it clean here)

40 Gamecube games - $10-$20 each - $500
5,000+ VHS tapes - $1-$4 each - $12,000
400 books on tape - $I have no idea - $700
Total amount if purchased on ebay - $25,400
Youre forgetting he said that most of the items are in fair or less condition, so I think some reworking might be needed.
This is what I would pay:
700 DVDs - $3-$5 each - $2,800
300 SNES games - $2 each - $600
400 Genesis Games - $1-2 each - $600
125 N64 games - $4-$6 each - $600
400 PSX games - $4-$8 each - $2,400
200 or so PS2 games - $10-$15 each - $1,200
60 X Box games - $10-$15 each - $750
40 Gamecube games - $10-$20 each - $500
5,000+ VHS tapes - $0 each - $0
400 books on tape - $1 - $2 each - $600
Total-Approximately $10000.
Sorry man, but I think you got taken.
VHS that have been used over and over and then in only fair or worse condition to begin with is pretty bad. Not only that I refuse to buy VHS because it is an extremely inferior and dead (at least it should be) technology.
The books on tape are also probably pretty worn.
Also, since you said that this was a rental place, I am assuming that none of these are complete, or at least very few are. That would take from the value a little more.
Granted I don't know if they were sitting on a bunch of rare titles, so that may drive up the price.
Did you get the building and title deed too?
