I find it impossible to focus on just one system. It'd be nice to complete my Genesis collection, but if I only bought Genesis games alone, I'd be passing up good deals all the time. My advice is to just be patient. With the profit you could make on eBay for the NES games you found, chances are you could buy even better Saturn games than you saw at that flea market. I'm not sure about imports, but I know that all U.S Saturn games are easily attainable. They'll still be easy to find if you take a break to pick up other stuff once in a while.

If time and money aren't concerns, I'd love to get complete Japanese Dreamcast and Saturn collection, as well as Japanese Super Famicom but that'd be insane, as SFC has over 4000 games in Japan.
I found US Dreamcast perfect to cure my urge to get sizable collection, around 100-200 total, yet so cheap as stores are clearing out those in the last 2 years that I'm able to get over 150 w/o spending too much.
So the answer is, depending on the systems.

I too am working on a complete Japanese Saturn collection, but I doubt I will ever see the day when it is truly complete. As it is I can probably fit another 100 games on the shelf (currently at 680 games plus 76 demos), and then I will be maxed out on space :( . Unless of course I sell one of my other systems to make space, but I don't think that will happen either.

I don't see what's so great about having a complete collection for a system.
There are crappy games for every system. Lots of them. What's the point of owning a game that sucks?

Well, if I wanted, I could've had nearly all DC games, my store had so many DC games on clearance around 2001 and 2002 and they went for as low as $2, but there're about 50 or so games that I wouldn't take even if they're free, such as Sega's sports games, no collection values at all, as well as most M rated games, violence is not my taste among games.
However, over 50% of DC games are decent, something that's worth picking up most of the games for them.

It's pretty much impossible for me to complete a collection, because I'm a slave to my local Funco/GameStop and my visits to CGE every year. Plus there's that whole problem of being able to play all of them (butta's right, a lot of games suck. HARDcore).

I think this question has alot to do with the resources ($$$) you have behind you. Normally I buy anything I see that is either a good value or a game of need at a decent price. I don't buy much NES stuff, since I only need 2 games, but if the price is right, hell it is good trade bait to get something I really want. 8-)
I agree with Sega Hitman, it is nearly impossible to focus on one system at a time, but right now, I am pretty much on a SNES buying spree. I am getting so close to the end that I just want to be done with it so I can move on to my next project (Genesis collection). The SNES set has been much easier to complete (so far) than the NES collection was (at least for me). Both systems (SNES & NES) are similar in quantity of games, but SNES games are MUCH easier to locate than rarer NES titles, probably due to the age of the systems. It isn't much cheaper, but your options are more open for SNES.
I try to limit myself to under $100 a week on games, but it can be tough when good deals come around (most everyone on this board is very fair to deal with! :D That makes collecting alot more fun for me!)
My advice to beginning collectors is just to do some small research (ie. checking around pricewise) before making major buys. Start with small buys then go from there when you have a good feel for the market and your own ability to spot a great or good deal. go for it. (A little off topic, but just my advice to some of the newbies in collecting)

I don't like to complete games because as was said earlier some games just suck ass. I am having a hell of a time finding neo geo pocket boxes or manuals. It's as if they were all burned.

How about trying it complete Neo-Geo home games? It took me 6 years to do it w/o spending much on other games/systems (1994-2000), and now Playmore is still pumping out games, I just have to keep up at this point. Luckily, most recent titles are readily available and I don't have to buy them right away, I just wait til price drops.
Speaking of DC's budget, mine is very uneven, I can either spend $150 a month when I come across many new games, or none. IMO, this is a good time to pick up all the DC games you need so it's "whatever it takes" for me, they're cheap/easy to locate, certain new/sealed games are becoming more difficult to find, eventually, even some used games may be difficult to find.

Absolutely true about a great deal of shitty games.
However, collecting games that you enjoy or just collecting games that you would play is only one type of collecting.
Collecting a "set" of anything is just like having a goal - you can make it as big or as small a list as you like.
Personally, I like trying to complete an entire set of games for each system - not because I would play them, nor do I have any delusions about liking even half of them.
I do it because it's a fun challenge, and because I'm obsessive compulsive. :(
Collecting to "show off" is totally retarded. Collecting because you enjoy it is great, and the definition of what and how you collect is up to you.
Just my thoughts.

This pic says it all, actually, Kizuna was fairly easy find compared to a few others like Chibi Maruko Quiz and Neo Turfmasters, I'll soon get my collection pics updated as I got a few more LaserActive and amassed my Dreamcast stuff (My goal is 185 [currently 155], after kicking out the crap games that you can't even give away), which should be fairly easy to achieve within a year.

I'm obsessive compulsive as well, that's why all my games must be complete, and why I print out inserts so my MVS games look nice, and why all my games are shelved in alphabetical order.
Yea collecting only to show off is retarded. But it is fun to share finds and collection pics with everyone.
The only collection I'm ever going to try and complete is US CPS2 games. Mainly because the mahjong games weren't released in the US, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna like every US CPS2 game, maybe except Mighty Pang. That's gonna be one hell of a tough collection to complete though.

Ahh, I see that you didn't try to put together a US only or Japanese only collection (rather, just get the titles.)
I am assuming that the Kizuna is Japanese.
Very cool though, nonetheless. :)
