View Full Version : Why did my PlayStation die?

My PlayStation One just died. It was being flaky before dying. When I loaded a game disc it would sometimes not spin up the disc. The drive would just set there. Hitting reset 2 or 3 times would correct it. Now that doesn't even work. When you load a disc the system boots up, then dumps to the CD Music/Memory Card menu.

Any ideas what could be wrong? I wouldn't think it is belt driven. Bad motor?

You just didn't love it enough. The blood is on your hands now.

No spin?

My guess is it think the door is open. Slamming the door lid down a few hundred times can wear out the door sensor. A way to test this is to take off the cover, and just above and to the right of the black laser assembly is an inset little black (or white?) button. The door, when closed, presses down this button. Get a Q-tip or something, and press that down, and put a disc on, and power it up (stay away from the power supply-piece where the grren light is all the way to power plug cable- while it's turned on SHOCK HAZARD!!!). If it spins up, your switch is dying. If it doesn't spin up, the switch is dead, or you have some other mysterious problem.

The door sensor switch can be defeated. Taping it down "may" work. I recommend pulling the motherboard out, and bridging the little switch contacts under the switch with a bit of solder or a wire soldered between them. What that will do, is make your PS1 think the door is closed ALL THE TIME., even when it's open. This is better because it will play discs when it thinks the door is closed. The alternative is what you have, no spin.

Good Luck, on fixing this one, or simply acquiring another one!

Omnedon,

Thanks for the useful info! I tried holding down the door button as you suggested, and the disc just sits there. No spin!

I guess I have a dead unit here. I just bought it used on my birthday (3/24) from Electronics Boutique for $30. One way to look at it is it's as if I rented it for 5 months for $30. Not too bad, still a sad day. I need a new one. :( :(
