Alright, for a column I'm doing. This is my "complete list". It's based on US titles only and one of the parameters of this genre has to be that you actually control some aspect of the video. For example, I left out games like Microcosm or "D" because the video is used strictly for backgrounds, whereas in a game like Sewer Shark where it seems to be the same case you are in fact making turns through the sewers by interacting with the video.

Am I leaving anything out?

I guess this is consoles only then :( Shame - I could list many for the PC :-D Anyhow - didn't Tender Loving Care get a release on a home platform in some dim and distant part of the past? Also, are you including those scummy 'games' you can play on a normal DVD player? I seem to remember that a few PC FMV titles have recently been re-released that way.

Excluding PC stuff and DVD player games. I'm also excluding Action Max, in case there are any smart asses here (as if that were in doubt) This is console only. Guess I shoulda pointed that out up front. I've never heard of "Tender Loving Care", it certainly wasn't released on any home console unless it was titled something else... ?

What about the 32X CD games?

What about the 32X CD games?
I was about to say the same. I know that both Fahrenheit and Corpse Killer had Sega 32X CD releases. Needed both to play. I'd add those too Joe, for they were "unique" titles and on consoles.

What about the 32X CD games?

OOH! You found a bug in my query! I was including only "type 1" which is US-based games but there is a "type 7" which is CD-based games and only used on normally cartridge-associated systems like 32X and TurboGrafx. Thanks fellas, I'll amend the list above.

Bah, Ok, I seem to be wrong about TLCare, or at least I can't find anything on the internet (so, wrong then.) Ah well, maybe next time.

Don't forget Space Ace, Dragon's Lair and Braindead 13 for the mighty 64 bit JaguarCD!

EDIT: That's better! ;)

OK, how about Dragon's Lair for the Game Boy Color? You do indeed only control the video, just like it's Big Brudder!

If you're going to include Sewer Shark, then you might as well include Cadillacs and Dinosaurs for the Sega CD.

Tough call. Would you really consider DL on GBC FMV?

Tough call. Would you really consider DL on GBC FMV?You're reacting to a movie on-screen. A digitized movie, yes. But it seems to fit your criteria. Other than it being just a skootch more primitive, it's no more different than DL for any other system. Move at certain pre-determined points to further the movie unfolding. You do not control the character, so much as just bump the stick/pad at the right times.

Your call, but I think this should be included.

I guess I've always considered "FMV" a disc-based technology. I know what you're saying and there's a good argument to keeping the GBA version on there. I shall deliberate on this. For now, it's got an asterisk in the database :)

Ah. Well, that leaves out my Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future collection. 8-)

DP, how about Rebel Assault II for the PSX? I believe that fits your criteria because in some of the stages when you're on ground and shooting Stormtroopers and the like the game screen is a actuall video shot, with the troops running in and firing at you, and you fire back at them. The space battle stages don't fit, of course, but I'd say the ground ones do -- and I was'nt sure if half of a game would meet what you want. I don't think the original was ever ported to a console, though.

Hmm. Another one that kinda skirts around the issue. On the one hand, it does CONTAIN full-motion video segments, and yet, I would have never considered the game itself a "FMV Game".

The original Rebel Assault was released on Sega CD and 3DO, but I don't think it has any FMV sequences, IIRC.

So now there are two kinda-sorta FMV games, are there others you can think of that are borderline like these?

SoulBlazer
09-02-2003, 02:08 PM
Yeah, I thought that game would be borderline. :) But I would'nt consider the first one even close. There WERE no actually FMV's or real photos in that one -- it was all computer generated. By compairson, about 75 percent of RA 2 was filmed, like a movie. It was even one of the tag lines on the back of the box -- 'the first Star Wars film shot in ten years' or something close to that line. So MUCH of the game is FMV, the only time you're actually not in it is the space battles which are computer generated, but the cockpit of the ship is still a FMV scene. It's for those reasons I thought it worthy to include.

(Oh, the PC version may be the only one with the FMV cockpit. I recall how the PSX port had a third person behind the ship view as well, and the ships were CG.)

don't forget Double Switch. At least that is what I think it was called. It was on the Sega CD and maybe others and was similar to Night Trap and had Corey Haim in it.

Roger that, it was already on the list. It's the unofficial sequel to Night Trap.

How about Panic! for the Sega CD? (Also, was A Fork in the Tale ever released on any consoles?)

No, Panic was more of a point and click like Myst. Still a crazy-ass game...

Burn Cycle for CD-I is a puzzle game, right? I've never played it but the trailer sure makes it look like a FMV game.

Since we are on the subject of FMV games, does anybody else find it strange that the Playstation only had one FMV game?

Also, what FMV games do you think are actually somewhat decent?

I always liked Night Trap.

Are you including games that take advantage of the PS2 and Xbox DVD player?

I know they released the Mad Dog Mcree games and Dragons Lair (and others I cant think of right now) with a "DVD Video, Xbox and PS2 Compatible" label attached. Like this:

http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/236492.asp

Granted these are just the DVD games but they were rereleased with the consoles in mind. Kind of a grey area, I guess.

Burn:Cycle is kinda more like Myst or Microcosm too, though it doesn't really do the things those games do very well. It has FMV sequences and some of the backgrounds are FMV/weirdly compressed video but you actually move from screen to screen manually, the game isn't running the game in FMV mode at any time.

This was already addressed, see above.

I've got three listed above: Fox Hunt, Psychic Detective, and X-Files. I'm not surprised that there were only a handful - by the time PSX came out the media was ripping the FMV genre a new asshole.

As for the good ones... that's forthcoming in the column :)

Wing Commander 3? The main game isn't FMV, but the choices you make during the FMV affect the outcome of the game.
