Fruit trading

I have

Peaches
Apples
Cherries
oranges
and Coconuts from the island...

I need pears, or any other fruit which may be available

And I just planted:
Cherries
Peaches

OK, I just put some Pears in as well... BUT.... Over half of my trees died, and I KNOW noone stepped on them.

Anyone know the "Rules" for planting tree's? I've paid quite a lot for some of these fruits, and I want some damn fruit trees!

This was pissing me off to.
One of my towns folk just told me other then not stepping on them, you can't stare at them to long or there be shy and not grow. He said check on them once a day and that should be ok.

also don't plant to close together....or else some will die and some will make it
