I'm such a news whore but....
Rockstar Games announced this morning that they will be releasing Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City as a "Double Pack" this Fall on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles. The PS2 version will ship on October 26, with the Xbox version following on November 4.
There isn't any information on whether the Xbox versions will be updated, but ports of GTAIII and VC have been rumored for some time.
What happened to Sony's deal? Can anyone refresh my memory on it?

Same thing that probably happened to Nintendo/Capcom's "Resident Evil forevermore only exclusive on Gamecube" deal. There's money to be had in cross-platforming. 8-)

I believe the contract with Sony was only for a certain amount of time, then GTA 3/ Vice could be lauched on other platforms.
Or perhaps Sony just let Rock Star out of the contract since Sony has nothing to fear from the X box ( who will buy a X box now for GTA 3?), and in return GTA 4 will be exclusive for a certain amount of time, thus helping PS2 sales.

Probably nobody will buy Xbox for GTA, but they will buy it for Halo, Star Wars: KOTOR, Ninja Gaiden, Xbox Live, Fable, Halo 2, BC, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Steel Battalion, Kameo, Conker, Perfect Dark, True Fantasy Live, and so on, and so forth...and GTA is only icing on the cake!
Fact of the matter is, some Xbox owners like "me", who only wanted a PS2 for Grand Theft Auto will now not be buying a PS2. Hell just the other day I was wanting to play this game so bad that I almost broke down and bought a ps2. This helps Xbox more than it hurts it, and will definitely sway some consumers "uses me as example".

I think the GTA series has sucked after GTA 2 but it will help the X-Box.
