it occured to me the other day that the quest for 3-D video games seems to have been abandoned. it began with vectrex's complex spinning disc 3-D imager, moved up to the still amazing shutter glasses on the SMS and then landed in the looney bin with the red and black insanity of the virtual boy. bear in mind when i use the term 3-D i mean stereoscopic and not 3-D perspective as in tomb raider. i did some online research into this topic but have yet to read a definative article. there are of course those 3-D PC glasses you see advertised on trash TV (not a good sign) and then some higher end PC glasses. the bug seems to be that it requires a mindboggling monitor refresh rate to make the flicker into 3-D. The PC glasses rave about how they will add a new dimension to quake but how good an effect can it be if the game was not made with 3-D viewing in mind? besides PC gaming is all fine and well but what about consoles? surely once EA has mo-capped every hot dog vendor in the NFL they'll be looking to 3-D to bring you into the game right? if sega could pull off a decent 3-D way back the 80s why dont we have a modern version? spare me the virtual reality sex chamber and tell me when i can expect to see laser blasts whiz over my shoulders in star wars xbox 3-D?
