TRON 2.0 seems to be a game built on the UT2k3 engine, though it moves faster on my gf4ti4200 then a stock UT2k3 world. That being said it looks and feels really solid! The game does the world of TRON more justice then any game in the past, even Disc's of TRON. The story is based in today but many old favorites are back including Alan 1 (voiced by Bruce Boxleitner) I was hoping that Flenn would be the lead when I first heard about the project. Guess they couldn't get ol' Jeff Bridges to put down that bottle long enough to do a project.. Anyway 20 years after the original story

Alan Bradley, creator of the original Tron program, has finally replicated the technology needed to successfully digitize a human being into the computer. The secret lies in Ma3a, an artificial intelligence program sophisticated enough to hold within its memory the complete genetic makeup of a human being, and the correction algorithms required to safely restore one to the physical world.

Unfortunately, Alan’s company is on the verge of a corporate takeover. Future Control Industries (fCon) has learned of Alan’s discovery and is interested in the technology for their own nefarious purposes. By digitizing specially trained hackers codenamed DataWraiths, fCon plans to infiltrate the world’s computer networks from the inside.

When Alan suddenly disappears under mysterious circumstances, his son Jet, a talented young computer programmer, enters the world inside the computer in search of answers. He discovers a sinister plot spinning out of control that threatens to corrupt one reality and forever transform another.

The game doesn't beat around the bush with the intro story like Half-Life did.. there are no widgits to push to start the game. The game, though FPS combat based at it's heart, is much more of a puzzle/adventure exploration game. Taking you threw the story at hand in the digital world. Although I didn't read the manual, I will say that some tinkering will be needed just to understand all the little tricks you can do by upgrading yourself. Like jump upgrades and such. There is quite a bit of looking for this or that to trigger this or that to get this or that to open this or that to get to.. etc. The story flows nicely and I only found myself getting bored in one spot around 3/4's the way threw it. This is a story drivin game for sure and it works.

Now lets talk about the one part I really felt was well beyond and worth the price of admission. Lightcycles. This game does Lightcycle comps better then i thought they could be done. The game grids are not just boxes (though they can be) but things like powerups like WALLBREAKER and LIGHTSPEED have been added which really makes for some last minute strategies. Also on the grid floor are color coated areas. Green area's make you travel twice as fast, red make you crawl along (which isn't always a bad thing if you are trapped.) Controls are what you would expect, LEFT RIGHT.. but you always can go faster by holding up or slow down with the back arrow. The camera can be moved around and even unlocked from the cycle's current direction though if you want to win you can't use the "fun" camera's.

Great game!! I give it a 8 out of 10.

Gameplay:
Feels like playing Disc's of Tron 20 years later.. sweeter then Yoohoo. 8-)

Graphics:
well at the par of todays current video card Tech. perfect TRON feel.

Sound:
Though the sound effects are those of the TRON movie, they just didn't quite get it perfect. A de-rez doesn't sound quite like it did in the film.. But hey, this is 20 year's later and the system is not the same. Also the game needs a special MP3 CODEC so if you have a MP3 CODEC already installed.. guess what, the sound won't work when you first install the game. So you have to uninstall your old CODEC and run a program on the second disc. This technical issue lowered my score on the game as the install should ALWAYS be a no brainer.. and as a video producer, what if my home system had a CODEC that some other productive software needed?

Story:
Great stuff! Though the intro was so short, I guess I've been playing to many RPG's lately lol.

Lastability:
Multiplayer will last you as long as your skillz stay up. People are getting extremely good at the disc arena's and cycle comps. I noticed no LAG in the online engine. So you can't blame the perverbial bent cue stick.

Story sounds pretty good; I see some intelligent ideas in there that actually take the old "caught in a game" cliche and the realization that there's something to be said for the direction technology is taking, though, of course, the future won't quite happen this way.

It's also heartening to read that the game runs so smoothly, as it doesn't look too bad at all in screenshots.

I'm definitely going to have to think about picking this one up...I've been watching it for a while and while it sounded cool, I was never really sure about the story. Since you said it was story-driven, I think I'm sold.

This is probably the first newly released game in a long time that I might actually buy. Naturally, this means that there is no chance whatsoever that my computer can run it.

Oh well, it will be in the bargain bin someday. And when it is, I'll be ready.

Judging from screenshots I've seen, it doesn't have the blown out technicolor look of the original movie. That would take half the fun out of it. Heh.

It's a game BASED on the world of TRON.. not a remake of the same movie we have seen 100's of times.. To make such an uneducated statement about a game makes me question if you are truely a gamer.

the Lightcycles scene was based off domino's, snakes and Snafu.. etc.. Hell, Snafu did a better job of the game then the tron arcade game.

Judging from the screenshots... wtf kind of thing is that to say man..

Shit dude, do you work for the fucking company??? If I want a Tron-like experience, I want it to look like Tron. This clearly doesn't, so to me, it would be just another UT mod. And oh, how I love those.

Judging from the screenshots... wtf kind of thing is that to say man..

Oh yeah, I'm way out of bounds estimating what the game looks like from the PICTURES OF THE GAME.

I must have missed what was out of line about David's post - he was just expressing his opinion, not even trashing the game but commenting on the authenticity of a TRON title not having that TRON look. I thought it was a valid comment.

Precisely. I'm sure it plays fine, but without that same visual "magic," it just wouldn't be the same for me.

what can I say.. I am an official fanboy of the game now.. *SHRUG* I've spent more time playing multiplayer lightcycles this weekend then any game this year in any one weekend..

That just says a lot to me about gameplay..

Multiplayer lightcycles = 4 directions, one fire.. easy to learn, hard to master.. THAT is what I love about it..

And as for the graphics, they fit right in to the TRON universe and the sounds add to that universe as they should.. Play it and you will see..

Hell, even Retrogaming Radio gave it their stamp of approval.. And he HATES, HATES! new games.. especially those that seem like Frag fest games.

Just to say, the screenshots do this NO justice. IT LOOKS LIKE TRON!!!!, you just have to trust me it does have the visual "magic".

You would be amazed how cool the effects are, especially the "Glow" effect created specifically for this title. It is based on the NOLF engine, not the UT. And the music and sound effects both are just amazing, especially if you are a fan of the movie.

I give this 2 thumbs waaay up!

[EDIT]
And actually Syd Mead helped with the title, who originally helped design the movie and the 1st arcade game

Well, until they release it for Mac, PS2, or Gamecube, it's a moot point anyway. ;-)

[IgnoreBickeringMode(true)]

I just completed the single player game and it was a blast. It definately beat my expectations, and being a huge fan of the original Tron movie that says a lot from me. BTW, in case anyone cares I have no relation to anybody involved in making or selling the game.

The game was a combination of first person shooter, RPG, platform jumping, arcade (light cycles), and interactive movie. It took about 18 hours to beat on normal mode and was never overly difficult. Some people complain about the graphics and everything not being 100% true to the original movie, but I don't think they could have pulled this game off if they hadn't modernized it. Being a computer programmer myself, I appreciated all the computer references and computer business jokes. I got a kick out of some of the original actors voicing characters too. There could have been a lot more of the distinct original Tron theme in the film, but overall the music was fair.

All in all, I think this is as close to a Tron sequel that we'll get, and it was killer. PC games rarely hold my attention for 18 hours, making this well worth the $40. Deus Ex is perhaps my favorite PC game of all time - this game is somewhat in the same vein. If I'd rate Deus Ex as a 10, I'd give Tron an 8.

Next I'll have to check out the multiplayer ...

I don't think multiplayer works yet...at least I haven't been able to get it to work. No MP lightcycles for sure; I think only Discs was supposed to work (and isn't for me so far, but I haven't fiddled with it).

Saturday night I watched Tron for the first time in probably 15 years or so. I've had the game for a few weeks but I wanted to wait to watch the movie with a friend (I tried the game once, saw the intro, and then didn't want to embark on my journey until I knew who the characters were). Then Sunday afternoon I started on the Tron 2.0 adventure. I just finished the game on Hard mode about 15 minutes ago. All I can say is - WOW.

This game is definitely a worthy successor to the TRON legacy. It was a blast. My only quibble is that the stupid disc acts a little crazy sometimes when it bounces around and you can't switch weapons while it's "out." That was definitely the cause of some grief for me with the second Seeker program (which was the hardest part of the game IMO - not the end guy...well, guys - or...whatever. I don't want to ruin the story). I want to play through it again on Medium mode next time...maybe be able to relax a little bit and not have to reload as often.

I think this game is getting to be around $20-30 (I bought it as soon as it dropped to $30) - that is definitely worth it if you are even moderately interested in FPSes. And I would agree with what's been stated - it DOES look like Tron. In fact, in some ways it's almost more Tron than Tron was, if such a thing were possible. The storyline is a great sequel, too, with all the same elements of the first one only mixed-up a bit. Oh...well, minus Flynn - I really wish he had been in the game (well, more than he was).

It has some great moments, too - like there's this jumping part, and I forget exactly what it does, but from time to time you see these pieces of code write themselves on the screen, and this one is like:

+++----- Program init

+ Jump = ?fun
+ = yes

++--

hehe

I can't believe I finished it in 2 days - I haven't done that with a game in forever. Man this game was so worth it - I can't recommend it highly enough.
