Well, in a few short days im going to obtain my very first Sega Genesis, and since im a late bloomer on the Sega stuff (when i was into all this stuff as a kid, all my freinds were NES freaks, not sega- i mean hell, i didnt even know that sega master system existed until like 1997) i was hoping you all could recomend some games i sould be on the lookout for...im interested in anything imported as well(my system is Mega Drive ready as far as i understand).
So far the only thing on my list that is a absolute must is Gunstar Heroes.
Please let me know, thanks.

I purchased a Geni for NHL 94 and Sonic Spinball. I've had a lot of fun playing Elemental Master, Klax and Gauntlet 4, but this is only one persons opinion. :)

The 6-pak is a nice place to start, as long as the store isn't trying to gouge you on the price. It's Sonic 1, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and others. Good stuff that.
Sonic series (duh!), Streets of Rage series, thunderforce/lighteningforce series, Gain Ground, Truxton, Galaries, Mortal Kombat, Virtua Racing (I still love this game), Herzog Zwei, Toe Jam and Earl, Earthworm Jim, etc.,etc.
I love the Genny@!

AWESOME.
The Genesis is one of my all-time favorite systems, as is the Sega CD. TRUE STORY: I waited at the EB near my house the day before my wedding to buy a Sega CD, they had some kind of nighttime special opening. I can barely remember it now but still... the DAY BEFORE MY WEDDING :)
Be sure to get the complete list from my banner. It's also got "+" for favorites and "-" for ones to steer clear of. Should help you out with your hunting and gathering.
Enjoy! And don't hesitate to ask about specific games, genres, or designers. Many Genesis fans here.

Shinobi III Great Ninja gaiden tpe game very nice visuals in parts "blossoms falling in the woods as you run by slashing enemies and throwin ninja stars" some of the best for genesis
Starflight If you like Star Trek or Star control type exploraiton sci fi shit this is as good as it gets
Shadowrun Great RPG that is very easy to play and takes place in a land of orcs, elves and Cyber hackers with AK-47's very very unique and stylish
General Chaos Great multiplayer military action
Vectorman one of the best platformers of the day. One of the WOW look at the graphics titles similar to Donkey kong for snes in that it was impressive they got these graphics from genesis.
Flashback the quest for Identity Great storyline, prince of persia with lazer guns and robots some nice visuals.
This is a nice mix of some of the best titles in my opinion. if you picked all these games up youd be absolutely enthralled for months.

Everyone's mentioned all of the "duh" good ones, but don't forget about King's Bounty! Much better than the PC version, and basically the prequel to the Heroes of Might & Magic series.

There were some great disney titles released for it too.
Mickey Mania is awesome. It has one of the best graphics for the system.
Aladdin is great too. Just like world of illusion.

You've got a get a Road Rash in there, too. Preferably Road Rash 3. Skitchin' is also a very cool game.
During the 16-Bit heyday, games like these are what distinguished the Genesis from that kid-sh*t known as the Super Nintendo... at my school anyway.

You should, of course, get all the main Sonic games. Sonic 3d is pretty bad, though.
You should also look for the following ( I haven't read any other suggestions yet, so I give my own opinions):
Robocop VS Terminator
Decap Attack
Kid Chamelion
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Mega Man - The Wily wars
Phantasy Star Games
- Chris

Gunstar Hero
Dynamite Headdy
Sonic(s)
Lunar 1-2 for Sega CD
Popful Mail for Sega CD (I Biffed it!)
Eternal Champions (this holds a special place in my heart.. some hate it but being the first of the SFII clones before SFII was out for the consoles it's cool.)
Earth Worm Jim
Toe Jam and erl
Don't forget Revenge of Shinobi. I don't think anyone mentioned that one.

I recommend:
Any game by Treasure - Yu Yu Hakushu Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy and Light Crusader.
Also Robocop vs. Terminator - what a great game!
Streets of Rage 2 & 3 (get Bare Knuckle 3 if possible, it's better)
I preferred Toejam and Earl 2: Panic on Funkotron to the original, but I think most people disagree with me. They are wrong though.
Bonkers is a good fun game.
Sonic 2 is my favourite of the series, but you should get them all!
Road Rash 3 is fantastic.
I liked Atomic Runner, but again, some might disagree on that.
Wiz n Liz is another unmissable game - frantic wabbit wescuing action, and great fun in two player mode.
Micro Machines Military is a MUST! I don't know if it was released in the US, but get a PAL version if you have to. It is one of my favourite games on any system, especially when you get that 4 player mode going!
Most of these are not too expensive, but . . . if you are looking for cheap games you should forget about Yu Yu Hakushu ($150+), Alien Soldier ($100+) and definitely forget about Mega Man - Wily Wars.. last time I saw it go it went for nearly $200!!! Wow, Vroomfunkel mentioned a personal favourite from my Amiga days. Never knew it was available for the Sega. Frantic fun, smooth graphics & effects. I'll second it.
Other personal favourites were Shadowrun, Populous, Mega-Lo-Mania, and one by LucasArts I forget the title of. Run around blasting aliens in gardens & houses. Much fun.
Speedball 2 is a riot, and a real challenge. Gods was good, too. There were a couple of other good ones by the Bitmap Bros which may not have made it over: Chaos Engine 1 & 2.
And I played the hell out of one called Corporation, but I think that's strictly a personal favourite.
Congrats! Welcome to the GENESIS REALM!
I haven't read through this long list, but here are some of my top favorites:
IF you like RPGS:
Phantasy Star Series (If you can find them cheap enough. Don't settle for a 30 dollar loose cart. I found my PS3 complete for 15 bucks.)
Then of course is teh Sonic Series. Get sonic 3 and Sonic+knuckles (snap on cart) if possible and merge together. fun!
Then of course is THE best game for the system, IMHO. TOEJAM AND EARL! Although nearly impossible to find around where I Am, and most places, this game rocks the house! This is the best two player game for the genesis that is not sports. I say that with confidance.Chucking tomatoes at flocks of ducks while escaping tourests and psychotic mailmen! WOO!! Its all in a non-linear game too, so that rocks as well!
Altered Beast is another gem.
The Golden Axe series is much like Gauntlet Legend but in 2-D.
Ah, there are a plethora of games to chose for this marvle.
