View Full Version : Any Game Gear games worth much of anything?

I saw a Game Gear at a thrift store with 13 games for $74.97. It had a nice little carrying case, and the 13 games with little plastic holders for them. I thought that the price was way too high, so I would definitely wait until that price got dropped, but I was curious if any Game Gear games were particularly valuable.

These were the games that came with it:

1. Super Monaco II GP
2. Alien 3
3. Wimbledon Tennis
4. G-Loc Air Battle
5. Super Off Road
6. In the Wake of Vampire
7. Aerial Assault
8. Rastan Saga
9. Joe Montana Football
10. Heavyweight Champ
11. R.C. Grand Prix
12. Streets of Rage
13. Batman Returns

By the way, some of these games looked like they were actually the Japanese versions. Do you know if Japanese Game Gear games played fine on the U.S. Game Gear? Or did the guy that have this had the Game Gear altered to be able to play Japanese Game Gear games.

I might have bought it myself if the system was in excellent condition and had some more extras. I don't own one at all. I have not seen a used GG in 'used' stores in probably 6 years....with the exception of one at a video game collector (as in charging 'collector value' prices on EVERYTHING, but jacked up) for the price of $35. The sell a Genny 2 w/Sega CD 2 for $100 used. Overall, I think SYSTEM ONLY, the GG goes for around $20 on eBay.

I bid on a 'like new' GG system with TV Tuner, AC adaptor, Rechargeable Pack, carry case, and 10 or so games for $80 but still didn't meet the guy's reserve. I wanted it :(

Around here, Game Gear fits into the "We don't really have people who collect these games, but we're too lazy to drop the prices...since the games are about the same size as Game Boy games...they're the same price $10 each" category. A couple places have some more common games for $5, but $8-10 is generally the price for a loose GG game...

That price seems high at first, but if the system is in good condition...it's proably worth it.

I don't know if there are any "Rare" GG games, I have a sneaking suspicion that my Ernie Els Golf is a bit harder to find than most games though... :)

Lots of used GG here in Albuquerque. I found a used GG with a power pack for $20 about two weeks ago. Without the Power pack it would have been $15. Carts seem to be going from $5 to $15 depending on the title and where you find them. So $75 bucks for a GG and 13 carts isn't bad.

Japanese handheld games work on US handhelds fine. Text, etc. will be in Japanese, but they will play without fault.

It breaks down to about $5.77 for each game with a free system. (atleast that's how I'm looking at it)

I *think* Super Monoco II, G-Loc Air Battle, Joe Montana Football, Batman Returns are common. Don't quote me on that though, but I wouldn't do it unless the GG system itself was in minty condition and was the glass-screen model.

If it's the dark grey GG with the black and white logo and feels like it has cheap plastic (not the RGB) stay away. It was made by Majesco and really on the low quality end.

I'm going to keep my eye on it, and if it drops to half the price then I might get it. But otherwise, I'll pass.

The most sought after GG games are Mega Man and Shining Force. I hardly ever played my GG, except for a couple of spins with Sonic. I used to collect for the GG, but i've given up and moved to dreamcast. 8-)

If you're into imports, Gunstar Heroes is a sought after title.

Mega Man is worth good money? That's crazy...I got it back in the day. Between Mega Man fans and GG competionists though, it makes sense.

Panzer Dragoon Mini plays a LITTLE like the first two saturn games. It was only released in Japan, and at the very tail end of the system's life. It's one to look out for I'm told. Evidently is doesn't work well with emulators.

I've got NO GAME GEAR, but I do have a game for it... Gunstar Heroes! I'm dying to play it, but then I'd have to start buying others games for it. Maybe someone here in Atlanta has one I can borrow... :D

I'm pretty sure that Frogger is a tough find as well. :D
I suspect that Tails' Adventure is fairly rare, at least by Game Gear standards.
