I was wondering the other day if Sega ever released the 32X in Japan. For some reason, I was thinking that this was a U.S. only system, but I'm not sure.

I don't remember there being any import games for the 32X. And the games that came out in the U.S. didn't have much of a japanese flavor to them.

It would've been kinda sweet I guess, if the 32X did come out in Japan, and if there were some really cool shooters and platformers that came out in Japan long after the 32X died over here, but I don't believe that was the case.

I'm pretty sure that the 32X was released in Japan, as there's one Japan-exclusive game, Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV.

It was called the "Mega 32X".

Yep...I've got a few Jap 32X games....the Japanese version of Zaxxon Motherbase 2000 is called ParaSquad...I think I like ParaSquad better.

Man you can tell the 32x did bad in japan as well because it seems all other sega systems regardless how lacking they were doing in the us they were real big hits in japan with many japan only great games that never made it to the us.

Apparently the 32x did worse in japan than anywhere else (im probably wrong though, please correct me if i am). Does anyone know why this is ? It had virtua fighter which was enough to sell saturns, and even though it wasnt the best vf port, surely there mus be a reason why it did so much worse. Low supply ? or do the japanese just dislike the idea of upgrading ? :hmm:

I used to own a Jap 32x machine. I'm not sure why I bought it as I didn't have a Jap Mega Drive or any Jap 32X games. It was sold soon after... ;)

there also was a european version, which, in fact, was more popular than the us and had more games...

No, The Japanese version of the 32x was called the SUPER 32x. I have one. It plays just fine on an American 32x. No territory lock-outs, it seems. The UK Pal version (called the Megadrive 32x) won't play on anything but a Pal Megadrive. No DarXide for us!

Check here and go to Tech Specs for pictures of the different hardware boxes.

No, again. The US system had more games and was more popular. "Popular" might be the wrong word to use with the 32x, but it sold more systems and games in the US than anywhere else. The UK market did get two games we didn't get, though. Check the link above.

The Super 32x came out in Japan AFTER the Saturn (it was the other way around in the US). The Japanese LOVED the Saturn (it was neck-in-neck with the PSX in Japan for several years and was way ahead of the N64. The Japanese Saturn library has over 700 titles, over three times the US amount.)

Glitchy as it was, Saturn Virtua Fighter looks better than the smooth-playing version for the 32x. I suppose Saturn VF Remix came out either before or around the 32x game, and Saturn VF Remix is a smokin' game.

32x seems to be most collected in the UK, with DarXide, Knuckles, Motherbase, and Stellar Assault being the most wanted titles. You could possibly add FIFA Soccer to that list as well, since it and DarXide were the only 32x games released exclusively in the UK.
