Thanks Scott.
Wow, your Space Fury Guy and Ms. Space Fury look terrific! Can you hack the barrel and fireball sprites too? The barrels might look good as a spinning Evil Otto head or something (since it's robots that are the bad guys)!
Great stuff, Keir.

looks good,
how did you change the color of the characters?
I know you can't chnage color using AHD v.01
I did a hack of Keystone kappers and I couldn't change the colors)

Thanks! I plan to hack the barrel and fireball sprites, and was hoping to get some suggestions from people. I love the idea of a spinning Evil Otto head, but right now I'm not sure how to do it (this is only my first hack - I've so much to learn!) The problem is that the barrel sprites don't actually rotate. It's just one image that flips back and forth (just like the Donkey Kong sprite) to give the illusion of rotation. It should be easy enough to add a couple animation frames, I just haven't figured that out yet. :/

I only used AHD to hack the graphics. Then I used the Distella program to disassemble the code so I could manually change the colors. Finding where the colors were located in the code was tough, but fun!

Hmm, that is a poser - perhaps just two Evil Otto heads will do - one rightside up and the other upsidedown. Then I guess there's the "barrel coming down the ladder" animation, which is probably 2 alternating sprites as well? Maybe turn the smiley on it's side and do the same thing for that.
The fireballs on stage 2 should probably be robots of some kind. Maybe Daleks! O_O

Jumping over a Dalek would be quite a feat! ;)

If only you had enough space to make the Daleks say "My vision is impared! Emergency!", that would rock :-D

Speaking as a hacker, the Evil Ottos should be bouncing. Now, I'm not certain what kind of sprites you're looking at, but it it's 2, just have 1 normal Evil Otto, and another "flattened, ie bouncing" Otto. As they flip back and forth, you'll have a bouncing Otto.
You'll also want to check out the barrel sprites as they appear when falling down a ladder. Instead of a spinning "barrel" end, the sprite changes to a sideway, lengthwise "tumbling" barrel.

I just downloaded it and tried it out myself, and I'm impressed. Great job! Can't wait to see it with the fireballs and barrels edited.

Agreed What an awesome hack!! Changing the colors really goes a long way in making the whole game seem like something altogether new.
Cool! I haven't had time to do anymore hacking so I'm glad someone else had a try. I think I like Dpkong2 the best. If only I could find where the colors for those sprites are....
Had to leave work early to have some work done on my house. And since it's such a gorgeous day outside....
I decided to stay in and work on some hacks. :-D
This one is Scott's Dpkong2.bin, but with a few minor changes to Mr. and Ms. Space Fury, and more importantly, BLUE Ottos!

This one is just for kicks. I tried to change the color of the girders to red, like the arcade DK, but there's obviously something tricky going on. Check it out:

I can't begin to tell you how cool this is! Man, you got the Space Fury characters down perfectly, and the spinning Otto heads are just great. Even the Daleks look good (though you have to be able to jump over 'em, IMHO).
EXCELLENT job, fellas. We've got an official DP hack in the works! Is there anything left to do? I think Otto needs to be a little lighter... how tricky is the sound to modify?
I encourage anyone who hasn't tried these out to give it a go, breathes some personality into the original game. The best version so far is dpkong7.bin (in the latest superstonic post).
When I changed Otto's color yesterday, you had taken down your avatar so I had to guess the right shade of blue. Glad to see you're bouncin' again! :)
Sound. I know nothing about sound. Did you have anything particular in mind that you wanted to do with the sound?

Nothing in particular, just something more in line with Space Fury (there are so many memorable sound bytes but probably very difficult to pull off on 2600, and I'm not talking about the voice), or as an alternative, "space sounds" in general :)

On higher levels of the game, it's pretty much suicide to try and jump over the fireballs, since they will invariably reverse direction when attempting to. Plus the way I play, I rarely jump over them anyway, so that's why I made the version with the tall Daleks :)
I agree, the fireballs are cheap and change direction without warning. The best way to play this level is to not jump over them. I like the change, it also makes the gameplay more unique.
Pretty soon, we'll need a label designed for this game. :D

After playing it a bit more I noticed one problem. You CAN'T HIDE on the ladders. It makes the second level extremely difficult and at higher levels almost impossible.

I dunno... jumping over fireballs in 2600 DK was a risk but a calculated one (like jumping over the fireball on the last rivet thereby making the stage end before you land). Even besides that, yeah sometimes you die, sometimes you won't. That gameplay element should still be there imho :/

Wow, this has turned out to be a most interesting hack of DK! Question: what is a Dalek, and where are they from (a game?)?

Question: what is a Dalek, and where are they from (a game?)?
They're the race of cold robots from the Doctor Who series. They're actually quite humorous to look at - the show had such a shoestring budget and these deadly enemies look like large salt shakers with a plunger nose, but they're "written" so well, ruthlessly clamoring "EXTERMINATE" and plotting the demise of all living things, that it WORKS.
I do like the version where you can jump over them better though, even if they appear to be too small.

Daleks come from the planet Skaro. They are in fact genetically altered organisms bred to have no emotions, incased inside a war suit. Joe got it down to a tee about how bizarre and funny they can look... but you'd shit yourself if you saw one in reality LOL
The old gag about them being foiled by stairs (as did happen before) got twisted around in the last series (Doctor #7) as they gave the damned things levitating pads to get up them heh...
I will now retire to my geek corner :P

I just tried out all of the hacks of DP Space Fury Kong. Playing with blue otto's and daleks is too cool. Is it at all possible to hack in both bitmaps (tall and short) for daleks, alternating every other round?

I downloaded the latest version last night - too cool. :)
I haven't had a chance to change the colors of the Ottos yet, but if someone else wants to do it here's all you need to do:
Change line LF9E4 from $82 to $86
I picked the color from http://www.urchlay.com/stelladoc/v2/tia_colorchart.html
It seemed the closest to Joe's avatar.
This will also change the colors of the Daleks, of course, but I don't see a way around that.
