View Full Version : How do you use the Game Genie with the NES?

I just got a Game Genie to use with my blinking NES. I hooked it up and I get the screen to enter the Game Genie code. What am I supposed to do now?

I don't want to use any codes, I just want to play the game normally, but aparently this is a way to get around the blinking problem?

So what buttons do I push or whatever, to just get to the regular game?

Good lord, man. Just hit the start button! Get back to me when you need help on opening the door to your house.

What is the game genie code for opening your door? I've never seen that one! O_O

I did hit the start button. That is the first thing I did. Hmm. Maybe my controller wasn't plugged all the way in or something. I'll go check.

When I first turn it on, the Game Genie screen is all distorted. I only see the very top. Then when I hit start, the screen goes gray.

I think my TV doesn't like the video signal for some reason. I'm going to try hooking it up to another tv and see what happens.

Your steaming sausage is not a game genie. Get it out of the cartridge slot before somebody ends up an anecdote in an ER medical journal.

Ok, here is the deal. I hooked it up to the other TV. I have 3 games Super Mario Bros. 1, Bases Loaded and Super Mario Bros. 3.

Bases Loaded works fine without the Game Genie. Both Mario's blink without the Game Genie.

Now, Mario 1 when I hook it up to the Game Genie, does give me the Game Genie code screen. When I press start however, the screen goes completely gray.

Mario 3, when I hook it up to the Game Genie, doesn't give me the Game Genie screen at all, and I just get blinking.

Like without the Game Genie.

So am I to assume that both of these Mario games are defective with or without the Game Genie?

I guess I should go get a couple other NES games to try out.

Try cleaning the Mario games again. Sometimes it takes multiple cleanings. Since your Bases Loaded works, you know that the deck's OK.

Also, after inserting the games and pushing down the toaster, try nudging the games to the left (or right). Some of my games will only work if they are nudged laterally after insertion.

If ever a topic screamed "restoraration sociemety", well, this is it.

Yes. It's not an effective test of a cart until you have tried it in 128 different consoles.

Dude...very common problem. Something is dirty.

Clean your games, replace your 72 pin connector and clean both ends of the GG. Should work perfectly.

REALLY clean them, completely, and the problem should go away for a while.
Take some q-tips and alcohol and keep cleaning it until nothing is coming off on the q-tips, then dry off the connector and put it back in; should work. If your NES is still constantly blinking, your cartridges are fine and the 72-pin connector is just FUBAR. Go on ebay and search for "NES 72-pin" and you'll find a thousand and one auction results. A new connector should last you 5+ years.

Again, I recommend against just going to ebay and buying a random connector. Didn't work for me.
