If you want to play good Shmups, you'll want to check out old arcades, or MAME; the console ports of arcade shmups have been meager at best by comparison, I'm afraid. Though, I can vouch that the R-Type series for the SNES is quite well done, but I'd have to advise staying away from the Raiden and Aero Fighters / Sonic Wings ports.

Wow. That was really random. And...you're forgetting about all the great console shmups around, for TONS of systems, import and domestic!

Hey... that WAS really random... and fairly silly IMO. :hmm:

Who's not been playing Saturn, Genesis, TG-16, and PC-Engine? :(

As my Civics teacher used to say, "ignorance of the law (shmup) is no excuse."

I have to second both max and Atari7800 on this one.

As for the Shmups, I like this one as much as Gradius. (Go Bandai!)

The other game, Flying Dragon, is a kung fu game by culture brain, yes

Not to be confused with the Dragon spirit where you control A flying Dragon, gain many power ups like armor Dragons, pick up diffrent spread type weapons, and fight through complex levels with large scale faceted bosses at the end. Its a forward scroller and the beginning story allows you to control the character and fight a boss before the game actually goes to the first level, although the cut screens and the story are confusing and it seems to be coming from another game altogether, Anyone else notice? The music is Excellent 8-) .

Just for the record, the PS One port of Raiden is perfect....as was Raiden II on the same disc.

Oh, okay. Yes, that's a damned good shmup, but I prefer the original arcade version and TG16 version over the NES game.

heh, well, we might as well talk about shmups a little bit eh? Which system has the best selection? I've got to go with Genesis, not saying it has the Best shooters, but I personally believe it has the best selection, although admittedly I haven't played many TG-16 shmups. M.U.S.H.A. is one of the best games I've ever played and I just recently grabbed that, not too mention all the great Renovation shooters to be had on Genesis.

I think Neo Geo has the best shooters, including Sonic Wings 2/3, but they are too damn expensive. I really really want Strikers 1945 and Blazing Star.

If I was into CD systems, I might consider a Dreamcast for shooters. I don't know what has better shmups though DC, PSX, or Saturn?

picking up a Saturn today, as all the Saturn talk of late these past couple months has gotten me wanting again. I'll attempt the region mod so I can try all those delicious japanese shmups (and fighters *cough*)

Need I say more, but the TG shines in the shmup area, even domestically. Blazing Lazers anyone? R-Type was brilliant on it as well, and Gates/Lords of thunder is always great for some fast paced fun.

Genesis is a great shmup system too, Gaiares is one of my favorite shmups of all time. However I've always been more about the Genesis RPGs than the shmups on it.

Considering I'd be hard pressed to find a Rayforce machine, I think I'll continue playing Galactic Attack on the saturn.

7800 Asteroids and Xevious were both fine ports, and Robotron is as good as the arcade IMO.

NES may have had some iffy arcade ports of shooters, but others were nicely done. Commando=the sucks, but 1942 seemed pretty good to me.

All in all, with a console port, you generally expect it to be a bit less then perfect, but so long as it maintains the gameplay well enough, I think most people are willing to let it slide graphically and audio..ly.
