View Full Version : Does anyone hold video game tournaments in thier game rooms?

I have been holding video game tournaments at my apartment for the past year or so. The outcry for them has been great, mostly averaging 8-20 people at my apartment every time. I hold them as an all nighter, true gaming style. I have different themes, and keep my players guessing alot. I will be holding one at my house the 20th of the this month. It will be sports related, everything from Tecmo Super Bowl to Football on the Astrocade. I was wondering, has anyone else held tournaments, did they have a particular theme, how was the turnout, and do you have any stories? I have even gone as far as to making customized brochures for the tourneys...gosh I am in nerd collecting heaven! :D

You lucky mofo, I don't even know 8-20 people in my area that like games enough to play all night. Most people just like to see one or two games and then 'let's go do something'. What the hell is wrong with people!?!? LOL

me and my cousin hold tournaments in his back yard. (i know it sounds funny) rain or shine we have a decent sized screen tent we set up with surround sound and we have 4 tv's. we charge 5.00 bucks a person and weve been able to pull in 50 + people before. ( good thing he has a big yard with a deck too). we hold everything from halo tournaments, to who can beat mario 3 the fastest, or who can get the highest score in bubble bobble, so we attract a newer and older crowd, usually we do this maybe once every other month. so if anyone lives in or very close to buffalo ny, we might be having one more before winter hits. just send me a pm

I know 1 other person within a 30 mile distance from me that I play videogames with. My father, who comes over to play sports once a week.

We've done this at my place several times (during our "NJ Classic" gamer gatherings). The last one we did was a Crazy Taxi Tournament - as simple as this: the person who gets the highest score in the arcade mode, 2 minutes, wins. The contest literally ran all night with the prize going to the person with the high score onscreen at midnight. I gave away a complete Dreamcast system to the winner.
I'm going to be picking something much more obscure next time, to nullify any "experts" and open the field to pretty much anyone who can figure the game out.

Nope. If I invited the people I know, it would end up with 10 people in my basement, abusing my hardware, spilling beer all over the place, someone would injure themself with a 45lb plate, and at the end of the night half my games would be missing or broken.

we'll do the occasional warlords battle at our trademeets, its a good trashtalking beer drinking game and its fun to mop the floor with clubninja (his hair really soaks up the spills nicely) a couple of times we've done the monkeyball thing too.
i'd like to see more multiplayer action at future trademeets, sometimes its just so hard to keep people away from the tradetable. although at our last meet there was some serious atari action, i've never seen that kinda kaboom scoring.

I don't do anything like this now, but back in my college days my friends and I would have gaming bouts every couple of weeks or what not, trading off spaces and food. Great to blow off stress. We'd have a few beers (once we were 21, that is 8-) ), talk smack to each other, and stay up in the late hours of the night. Games always varied -- one time it might be golf, another time, racing games, another time, football, whatever.
I also knew a couple of people during my college/grad school days who, when they got a popular game like a new Final Fantasy or Half-Life, would have a 'open door' policy every night or so where anyone could come in and see the game and watch the playing. The RPG's were especily popular with the cute ladies of the dorm. LOL
And there was even one guy who had a stand up Star Wars (Atari) in his room -- anyone could go in at any time and play it. Kept him well stocked in beer and pizza. :D

Anyone who's ever majored in cmpsci has spent overnights in labs full of guys playing whatever the popular fps of the time was... for me, Doom and then Quake...
Yeah, I had a big video game tournament last year on the day before New Year's Eve (New Year's Eve Eve). It didn't last all night, but it was a fun time. We had brackets for several specific games, and there were lots of smaller individual challenges.
This didn't only take place in my game room, though. It spilled over into the adjacent living room where we set up an additional N64 to help speed up the Mario Kart 64 bracket, and a second NES to allow for the Super Mario Bros. race. For the latter we had two copies of SMB1 running and two players raced head-to-head to finish the game. Warp zones were allowed to keep everyone from falling asleep.
Check out some pictures HERE. (http://www.carligula.com/carligula/contribution.php?content=videogametournament)

Where exactly in NJ are these things? NJ is a bit of a hike for me, but if it could be said to be worth driving from MA...

It's about 4 hours from you. We did a road trip in February and came up your way for New England Classic Gamers and that's about how long it took. I used the ZIP code that I remember from the TV show ZOOM (Boston Mass 02134) and plugged it into Mapquest:

Back in the early to mid 90's I would hold Mortal Kombat tournaments either at my house or at a friends apartment with a small group of friends. It was never alot of money and it was the same friends everytime. On average we were either up 15-20 bucks or down 15-20 bucks, but each week that changed, lol. Great fun!
Now, my husband and I both play (usually Halo) so we can battle it out:)

Cool... something like that is probably worth a 4 hour drive. I'm actually about 11 miles south of that boston zip code, so shave off 20 minutes from that. Cool stuff! I'll have to keep my eye out for the next one, or at least make sure to be at the next NECG gathering (that is, if Christian doesn't bar me at the door).

not to worry chad, any silly thing that comes up on these boards stays on these boards. in fact i cant recall an single time that politics have ever come up at a trademeet. you and everyone else here in the northeast are welcome to come over for trades, games and beer, regardless of political persuasion.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! I will definitely tie myself to my laptop soon and post in the Introduce Yourself thread. I see my husband has already beaten me to that;)
Glad you like the game room! We sure love it and adding to it, too.
Long live video game tournaments!

Where are you guys located, roughly? I'm sure that whereever it is, there are DP members in the vicinity you could hook up with for some gaming goodness (particularly if you're anywhere in New England).
Which DP member is your husband?

Maybe we could carpool, Chad. :D

I never had one myself, but I went to a Tekken 3 bash once in S.C. They were betting $1.00 a fight, and I left with all their money. I had to go to the store to get 20 -1 dollar bills and walked away with about $600 . Those country bumpkins never invited me back...hehe :P

I've thought about it, but my room of doom is tiny, and I can't very well move the consoles anywhere else in the house to do it, since every other room is rather cramped, if any more then like, 5 or 6 people are in it.
I know Robotron has had 20+ people over at his place to do gaming before, not tournaments, per se (although he's been willing, provided someone wants to do to the organizing), but general gaming, yeah, its good.

Well, back in the early days of AVC when we were just a local club
I would have a game tourney with some of the local members(there was oinly four of us) to decide who would run the club for a short time.
but those days are now gone, the main tourney still continues though
It's what I call Atarimania.

Voodoo is my hubby. And we are located in TN. We have what we like to call "video game parties" several times a year, but none of our friends are real into any game other than Mario Kart, Goldeneye, or Bomberman. We definitely need to make some new game friends!

Ha. Unfortunately for you, I still remain undefeated in any NECG Warlords Tourney. Perhaps the reflexes are starting to go on you, old man?
